The Biggest Loser: Maturity rules

Last night was the painfully long 3-hour finale of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser: Couples,” and all I can say about that is that I’m incredibly thankful for TiVo. This show was when they bring everyone back from the whole season one by one to weigh them in, which takes about 15 minutes total, leaving 165 minutes of fluff and commercials. As they recapped the whole season, Mrs. Mike and I fast forwarded since we’ve not only seen every episode, but they tend to recap the entire season almost weekly.

Then they brought out Ron and Mike to see who America voted into the final 3…..both looked awesome but Mikey clearly lost more than Ron, at least to the naked eye. We’re all sick of their gameplay, but you have to hand it to them on doing a great job. And, drum roll please….America voted Mikey in! Many of us were pulling for Ron because we didn’t want to give him what he wanted, but I think in the end everyone saw a Mike-Helen-Tara final as more compelling.

The Biggest Loser: Best case scenario?

So last night’s “Biggest Loser” on NBC gave us a best-case scenario if you’re tired of the gameplay and manipulation, but it is leaving many of us with the feeling of not really caring who wins. And there were some crazy things that went on and some very cool moments, so let’s get to the recap…..

The final four went home for 30 days and then would return to the ranch to weigh in one final time, with America voting someone off, or rather, voting someone in to the live finale next Tuesday. Ron and Mike went home to Detroit, Tara to Long Island and Helen to Lansing (does anyone else notice how many contestants are from Michigan and Wisconsin every season?).

The Biggest Loser: “Godfather” Ron is a liar

Last night on “The Biggest Loser,” the episode began with Kristin jumping for joy that she avoided elimination and that Laura went home with her hip injury. Kristin, however, was feeling confident now that she could possibly win, but also feeling like maybe she shouldn’t get too excited. Tara, meanwhile, was so upset about Laura getting voted off and that everyone would be trying to take her out now. Well, duh. Suck it up, Tara! Jillian told her as much, saying that Laura being sent home was good for Laura, and that this isn’t about Tara. She also told Tara that it’s a good thing to be the one everyone is gunning for.

Then they had a game show type challenge with the editor of Good Housekeeping, in which the contestants had to answer nutrition related questions. It came down to Mike and Kristin, and the tiebreaker was having to guess the number of calories in a fast food fish sandwich without going over. Kristin guessed like 400 and Mikey guessed 635, and the actual amount was 640. Wow! So Mikey won, but then the fact that some of the competitors didn’t do so well angered Bob Harper to the point of him wanting his team to videotape a day of their eating habits.

They showed Mikey doing a product placement with plastic bags, and he said that when he goes to college, he’ll be able to cook chicken breasts in these plastic bags in his dorm. Which made me think of something–what exactly is going to happen to Mikey when he discovers beer? I’m just sayin’!

The Biggest Loser: Big sweeping curveball

I gotta hand it to the folks at NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” They keep changing things up the point of being insane, though I admit last night’s curveball was strangely compelling. After Aubrey was kicked off last week, Filipe was shown talking to his cousin Sione, and they were both pissed that Ron had almost voted Filipe off the previous week. Then since host Alison Sweeney had her baby that week, guest host number one was Ali Vincent, the winner from two seasons ago and first female Biggest Loser champ. Ali threw the curveball, bringing back three contestants who were voted off early in the season–Nicole, Estella and David. They would each weigh in and whoever had the highest percentage of weight loss to date would be allowed back in the competition, with immunity the first week so long as they didn’t gain weight.

Estella lost 45 pounds, or 18.6%; David, though he looked about the same as when the season started, lost 46 pounds or 11.7%; and Nicole lost a whopping 87 pounds, or 32.34%, and was the clear winner. Not only that, Nicole has the second highest percentage of weight loss in the house now, second only to the mighty Tara. Not surprisingly, this made everyone nervous.

The Biggest Loser: Are you as annoyed as I am?

NBC loves to mess with us when it comes to “The Biggest Loser.” Once again, the teams were broken up and it is now an individual competition again, as the show began with host Alison Sweeney giving each contestant the color t-shirt they began this season with, and then having them pick which trainer they wanted to work with the rest of the way. That is, until she threw another twist at them. This season is “The Biggest Loser: Couples,” but the show never gives you what it promises. Okay, so it’s an individual competition again. But next week they will change it up again. It’s maddening, and if I wasn’t asked to write this blog, I probably wouldn’t watch the show anymore.

Anyway, the contestants went through the process of choosing their trainer as if it was a life and death decision. At least that’s what these lovely producers of the show wanted to portray. I realize Jillian has a winning track record and Bob is the nice guy, but come on. Tara, Mike, Laura and Helen all chose Jillian while Kristin, Filipe, Sione, Ron and Aubrey chose Bob.
