Hell’s Kitchen: unexpected doubleheader

Does FOX have to reach for programming when it makes “Hell’s Kitchen” a two-hour event? It wasn’t the season premiere, but instead two episodes lumped together as one. Great if you’re a fan of the show…mildly annoying if you’re a blogger! And to keep your attention, I’m going to make this a rapid fire recap.

    Episode 1

The two teams had to make lunch for the USC marching band and cheerleaders, and had to make basic lunch fare like burgers, fries and salad. Jason was slow on the salad and Scott couldn’t cook a burger all the way through, so the red team made it to the finish line first. Their prize was a day in the sun in Malibu, playing soccer on the beach with Ramsay and his family. The guys, meanwhile, put on yellow jump suits and had to clean debris from a freeway “river.” Seriously, no river goes through Los Angeles that I know of!

The Next Food Network Star: rigorous testing

I realized last night while watching episode 2 of this season’s “Next Food Network Star” that they are really putting the contestants through the wringer this time. The first two weeks they were thrown into the fire so to speak, having to get in front of a camera and ad lib with almost no time to think about it. That does, however, truly separate those who have it from those who don’t.

Hell’s Kitchen: weeding out the riff raff

In the early part of the season on reality shows such as “Hell’s Kitchen,” there are usually a few fringe contestants who really don’t belong there in the first place. And these are usually the first ones to go home. Last night two went home, one by choice and one by Gordon Ramsay. Here is how it all went down….

They began with a 5am wake up call, as chefs Scott and Andrea attached an amplifying device to a standard alarm clock. Yikes. Ramsay met them in the kitchen where he asked them to cook eggs for him four ways–soft boiled, poached, scrambled and sunny side up. They would work in groups of two except for Siobhan, who for some reason was singled out to work alone.

5 questions with Kevin Gillespie, Top Chef finalist and instructor for Top Chef University

In the most recent season of Bravo’s hit reality show, “Top Chef,” I was pulling for Kevin Gillespie in a big way over arrogant brothers Mike and Bryan. So I was thrilled when I was presented the opportunity to ask him a few questions by e-mail. Kevin and another Top Chef alum, Carla Hall, have been chosen to be the virtual instructors for a new online culinary course, Top Chef University.

Here is how the press release describes the course:

The Next Food Network Star kicks off Season 6

Last night began the new season of “The Next Food Network Star” and they changed things up dramatically this time. Instead of taking place in New York City near the network’s offices and studio, they moved it out to Los Angeles, putting the focus on the “star” portion of the show’s name. Also this season, in addition to regular judges Bobby Flay, Susie Fogelson and Bob Tuschman, the show added Giada Di Laurentiis as a mentor to the twelve contestants. Oh, and the fact that there are twelve instead of ten is also a change.
