New York Comic-Con 2009: The Wrap-Up

You know you’re on the right bus for Comic-Con when a guy comes aboard wearing a Flash t-shirt…and he’s followed a guy toting two enormous bags in which to carry swag…and then that guy is followed by Darth Vader.

Actually, now that I think about it, maybe Lord Vader wasn’t actually on the bus with me, but he was most certainly present – and in various heights, weights, shapes, and sizes, no less – during the course of the New York Comic-Con, which took place at New York’s Javitz Center from February 6th through the 8th.

Our man Jason Zingale has been our resident San Diego Comic-Con attendee for the past couple of years, but Bullz-Eye was also in the house for last year’s NYCC, thanks to our man in New York, Jonathan Flax. (Granted, he’s often a quiet man, but he’s still there for us when we need him.) This year, however, I couldn’t resist the chance to take in Comic-Con for myself. The San Diego event takes place immediately after I’ve already spent two-and-a-half weeks in L.A. for the July TCA Press Tour, and by that point, I just can’t be away from my wife and daughter any longer; fortunately, the NYCC takes place long enough after the January TCA tour that I was able to feel comfortable heading out of town to attend. It was disappointing that I had to take in all of the sights, sounds, and events all by my lonesome, but lord knows there were plenty of other people with whom I was sharing the experience. I might’ve come by myself, but I was in no way alone.

Tarantino’s “Basterds” gets its big debut

Those wondering if Quentin Tarantino would complete his latest film (the WWII epic “Inglorious Basterds”) in time for the Cannes Film Festival (and perhaps more importantly, its late August release date) need not worry. Yahoo! Movies has officially released the teaser trailer on the internet today, and from the looks of things, it’s farther along than I imagined. Though it seems to be more traditional than the usual QT project, the film shows immense promise – notably Brad Pitt, who seems to be channeling his inner George Clooney for what may be his best role to date.

In the film, Pitt stars as the leader of a group of Jewish-American soldiers who invade Nazi-controlled France to give Hitler and his army a taste of their own brutality. The film also features “Freaks and Greeks” star Samm Levine, “The Office” star B.J. Novak, and horror director Eli Roth. Check out the trailer below, and then let us know what you think.

Gee, your Trekkie smells terrific!

Those pop culture geeks among us who don’t mind dropping a little bit of coin to score unique trinkets inspired by our favorite shows may already be familiar with GenkiWear, a company which has earned a name for itself by producing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” jewelry, including reproductions of Anyanka’s Power Center Amulet and Necklace and The Slayer’s Cross and Necklace.

Now, however, they’ve set their sights…and their scents…on “Star Trek” fans by developing a trio of fragrances celebrating the classic TV series. Get your olfactory organs ready for “Tiberius” (destined to be referred to as “Smells Like Shatner”), “Pon Farr” (great news for those of us who are looking to score with a Vulcan but can live with only getting laid once every seven years), and “Red Shirt,” which we can only presume allows its wearer to bear the stench of death…but for God’s sake, don’t wear “Tiberius” and “Pon Farr” together unless this floats your boat. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) All three of these colognes are scheduled to be available in stores in the spring…a date which is no way coincidental to the release of the new “Star Trek” movie.

Savage Grace

Tom Kalin unleashed “Swoon,” his unsettling, arthouse take on the Leopold and Loeb murder case (the same crime that inspired “Rope” and “Compulsion“), way back in ’92. He then disappeared from the world of features for 16 years, and has now returned with this film, based on a lesser-known, yet equally perverse, true crime. “Savage Grace” traces the society-driven, globe-hopping antics of the Baekelands – Brooks (Stephen Dillane, “John Adams”), Barbara (Julianne Moore), and their son, Tony (Eddie Redmayne) – from the 50s through the early 70s. From the very beginning, it’s obvious that Brooks has to put up with a lot. Barbara is theatrical, obnoxious, clingy and probably bipolar, and the last thing she needs is a child. As Tony grows up, the mother-son bond tightens and he seems to inherit some of her nastier traits. Before long, Brooks can’t take it anymore and runs off with Tony’s girlfriend (really, you can’t blame him), leaving mother and son to inflict heaping helpings of emotional damage on one another – a situation that eventually ends in twisted tragedy. What’s most interesting is how, rather than cover snippets of time from the 20-plus year long haul, Kalin instead chooses a handful of pivotal days from the timeline to focus on.

“Savage Grace” isn’t anywhere near as hypnotizing as “Swoon,” and yet it’s hardly a bad film – just a deeply unpleasant one. What was Kalin’s goal in making the piece and how much of it is true? Regardless of intent, he’s ultimately created a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of being wealthy and bored – an ugly combination destined to go sour. It’s also a must-see for fans of Julianne Moore, as she once again proves that she’s willing to go the distance for whatever material she signs on to help interpret.

Will Nimoy appear on “Big Bang”? Highly improbable, Captain.

Given that “The Big Bang Theory” has expanded the game of Rock Paper Scissors (the full name is now Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock) and had Penny give Sheldon a stroke for Christmas by providing him with a napkin autographed by everyone’s favorite Vulcan, can a guest appearance by Leonard Nimoy be far behind?

Unfortunately, according to creator Chuck Lorre, such an appearance doesn’t seem too likely.

“I would love that,” said Lorre, “but I think Mr. Nimoy is now in retirement. He did actually sign the napkin, though. ‘To Sheldon, Leonard Nimoy.’ He was very nice about that. He got a kick out of the idea that that was the gift that she gave him that brought Sheldon to his knees. He was really tickled by that, and our deal with him was, ‘For your efforts, maybe we can make some money for the charity of your choice.’”

The charity in question was The Beit T’Shuvah, a residential treatment center in Los Angeles for Jewish alcoholics and addicts, and the napkin went up for auction on Sunday evening during the center’s Steps to Recovery Gala at the Beverly Hilton, where it earned a final bid of $1,100.

But the big question is, is Nimoy a fan of the show?

“I don’t know,” admitted Lorre. “But I do know that he got a kick out of the storyline.”

I still say to keep your fingers crossed…and, c’mon, Chuck, it can’t hurt to ask. The new “Trek” movie will be coming out around the same general time frame as the season finale for “The Big Bang Theory,” and given that Nimoy clearly has a good sense of humor about his place in the pop culture pantheon (see his appearances on “The Simpsons” for proof), it seems like the stars are aligned perfectly for such a cameo.
