“Yes, yes I remember, I had lasagna.”

It’s never been a secret that the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker parody classic, “Airplane!,” was largely inspired by a not-that-frequently seen 1957 disaster flick called “Zero Hour!.”  Audiences were, however, familiar with countless other similar films that combined possibly immanent death with various types of melodrama. The definitely included the then-recent series of hugely successful airborne movie suspense-soaps that started with 1970’s “Airport.” It may have helped that “Zero Hour!” had been co-written by Arthur Hailey and “Airport” was based on a best-seller by Hailey.

Still, having never seen “Zero Hour!,” I had no idea just how close the two movies could be until I saw the following. Shirley Surely, you’ll see the resemblance.

Great work, someone. A huge h/t to /Film.

Superhero movie madness, explained

Let’s face it, this superhero movie thing is in danger of getting out of control. On the DC side we have Batman, Green Lantern, possibly the Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and, assuming the studio can move faster than a speeding lawsuit, Superman.

Marvel, of course, is moving faster still with movies about Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Captain America, possibly Nick Fury, and who knows what else leading up to an “Avengers” film to be directed by geek fave Joss Whedon, we think. (In April, Whedon and Marvel were in “final negotiations.” Now one of Whedon’s brothers has apparently told MTV that he has “tentatively agreed” to do it…is that even different?)

So, what’s the big deal? A few movies have been extremely successful and Hollywood follows its historic tendency towards repeating a winning formula until such time as the audience completely revolts. Is this any different? No, actually, but also yes. You see, I haven’t read a Marvel comic in a very long time, but even now my closet fanboy heart goes faintly pitty-pat at the thought of an “Avengers” movie incorporating the same actors from the other films. Why? It’s called “continuity.” What’s that? I could just say, “It’s a fanboy thing, you wouldn’t understand.” But now, thanks to some random guy with a little musical ability and more wit, action figures, and time on his hands, I have an explanation. In song.

Big time h/t to Alison Nastasi of Cinematical.

Trailer for a Thursday — “Winnebago Man”

As the number of Internet memes and fads grows, so will interest in the stories behind them. Such is the germ of “Winnebago Man” about how an extremely frustrated RV pitchman found his little bit of fame a couple of decades after a difficult day in 1988. Below is the fairly curse-filled trailer via the Playlist, where you can also the extremely funny, extremely curse-filled video that started it all.

And here’s a video I found from 2009’s SXSW that shows that Jack Rebney hasn’t lost his special mojo.

A pitbull named Buddha. It all suddenly makes sense now.

It’s all a part of the lattice of web/cinematic coincidence

I’ve just had one of those moments where one’s ‘net surfing all ties in together in way similar to that described below by the great Tracey Walter in 1984’s “Repo Man.”

So, today, I’m trying to decide what to write for this post, and I happen across Roger Ebert’s tweet noting that today is the 103rd birthday of John Wayne. Now, I’m tempted to start looking for a good YouTube clip to run as one my “movie moments” posts, but this is hardly the first time I’ve noted the birthday of the Duke, and it’s not like it’s a birthday ending with a zero. Still, I look at some clips, but nothing really seems to work.

The Island is on the toenail of a giant…

Okay, so Fred Armisen was just a bit off, but while everyone continues to digest and debate the “Lost” series finale, it’s fun to look back on this old “Saturday Night Live” bit where several “Lost” fans share their early theories about the show while they share an elevator with Matthew Fox.
