Though, of course, it might as well be.
According to the Austin Chronicle (via Ain’t It Cool News), “The good news is that Austin fans will finally get to see Mike Judge’s futuristic comedy, ‘Idiocracy,’ on the big screen. The bad news is that people in most other areas of the country likely won’t. ‘Idiocracy’ opens in limited – and very quiet, judging by the lack of a trailer and short notice – release on Sept. 1 in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, and Toronto.”
I admit, it’s possible this could just be another “Run Ronnie Run” (a.k.a. the “Mr. Show” movie), where excitement runs high but turns out to be woefully misplaced. But given all the positive script reviews I’ve seen, I just have to believe it’s more likely a case where a studio just doesn’t know how to promote the film, so they’re just dumping it and leaving it for dead.
Does no-one remember how “Office Space” flopped in theaters before freaking exploding on home video…? Man, I hope this backfires in the studio’s face BIG TIME.
Actually, that’s bullshit. Of course they can’t.
So when you read this article, which says that “Turner Broadcasting is scouring more than 1,500 classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, including old favorites ‘Tom and Jerry,’ ‘The Flintstones’ and ‘Scooby-Doo,’ to edit out scenes that glamorize smoking” because “one viewer…took offense to two episodes of Tom and Jerry shown on the Boomerang channel, a corporate sibling of Time Warner Inc.-owned Turner Broadcasting,” well, it’s a lie. Clearly, somebody higher up the food chain feared that someone might file a lawsuit in twenty or thirty years, saying that they got lung cancer because Quick Draw McGraw lit up a stogie.

What a stupid, stupid world we live in, full of stupid, stupid people.
If you thought I used that possible Robin quip back when I did my piece about TV shows not yet being on DVD, you’re wrong. (The actual line was, “Holy legalities and licensing, Batman!”) But I wish I had been wrong about how unlikely it was that we’d see the ’60s camp classic on DVD anytime soon because of all the lawsuits flying back and forth.
Frankly, I’d feel better about the delay if these guys were responsible for it:
