Hell’s Kitchen: no respect, no dice

Last week, we left off on FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen” with Chef Joseph challenging Gordon Ramsay to “step outside” because he “ain’t no bitch.” Nobody had been eliminated up until this point, so would Ramsay send the guy home, would he beat the crap out of him first, or would he just appreciate Joseph’s fire and let him back in line. Well, security guys surrounded both of them, ready to reduce Joseph to a fine pulp if need be, and Ramsay didn’t back down. Of course, you don’t have to back down when you have 1000 pounds of dude protecting you. But after calling Joseph a “chippy idiot,” Ramsay told him, “You have no respect…so get out!” Joseph shouted expletives on his way out and all of the other contestants were left with their mouths wide open. Of course, we still think the producers planted this guy, but we’ll never know that for sure.

Anyway, the red team had already nominated Lovely and Tennille, while the blue team nominated Tony and Andy. Ramsay chose Tony to go home, because the dude just consistently screwed up last week’s dinner service. That left the blue team two men down, and so Ramsay sent Robert back to the blue team, making it men vs. women again.

A chat with Debbie Lee of “The Next Food Network Star”

It seems like many viewers of “The Next Food Network Star” were up in arms about Debbie Lee because of several questionable tactics and comments she made during more than one episode. They were letting judge and network exec Bob Tuschman know how they felt in responding on his blog last week. Well, Debbie was eliminated this past Sunday, leaving Melissa D’Arabian and Jeffrey Saad to battle it out for the crown. Was Debbie singled out for previous missteps? Good question, but we think so, and we think she had it coming either way.

Anyway, we had the chance to ask Debbie about her experience on the show and on her future plans…..

Premium Hollywood: What do you think ultimately was the deciding factor in your being eliminated?

Debbie Lee: It’s hard to say. I would love to get inside the judge’s minds to figure out what they were thinking. I know it was a very hard decision, but I think ultimately with Melissa’s being a mom, Jeffrey’s consistency…it just was a tough decision.

PH: Do you plan to pursue your own cooking show regardless?

DL: Yes, I would love the opportunity. I would also love to do some books and have the opportunity to express my Korean-American background.

PH: Who do you think will win now, and why?

DL: That’s a tough one. Melissa is a mom, has the all-American skills, Jeffrey is a fascinating chef with an interesting background, he’s exciting to watch. Let’s just say I’m glad I’m not a judge!

PH: What can you tell us about your new hot dog restaurant?

DL: The restaurant is going to be a hot dog concept that also integrates that comfort food with Southern spirit.

The Next Food Network Star: do you believe in karma?

For those of us pissed off that the judges of “The Next Food Network Star” kept giving Debbie Lee pass after pass this season, despite the fact that she was dishonest and deceitful while acting all jolly and Korean, karma reared its head in our favor. More on that in a minute, but last night’s showdown between the final three of Lee, Melissa D’Arabian and Jeffrey Saad was actually very exciting to watch.

They began the episode by having the three finalists meet Emeril Lagasse at his restaurant, and Emeril announced their challenge for the week–in honor of the upcoming film, “Julie & Julia,” the contestants would have to create their own ultimate 3-course meal for some very distinguished judges. Each would have $1000 to shop as well as the help of a sous chef. After shopping (and Jeffrey being way under budget), they arrived back to find out who their sous chefs would be….naturally, former contestants….Jamika, Michael and Katie, who would be paired with Melissa, Debbie and Katie, respectively.

Top Chef Masters: more mutual respect

Last night on Bravo was the final preliminary round of “Top Chef Masters,” and next week begins the finals, in which one chef will be voted off each week until someone is crowned Top Chef Master. And last night, more so than in previous episodes, there was a lot of love and mutual respect going on between the contestants…..Jonathan Waxman of New York City, better known as the dude who trained Bobby Flay; Roy Yamaguchi of Honolulu; Michael Cimarusti of Los Angeles; and Art Smith of Chicago (better known as Oprah’s chef). You could already sense that this would be a very competitive round, and it was.

Their quick fire challenge was to create a dish with just $20 and the use of a single aisle at a grocery store, drawn randomly. Jonathan drew the aisle with canned veggies and dried beans, and wound up making a red pepper and lentil salad. Art had the rice aisle and made a risotto with crispy rice salad. Michael had the baking aisle and made a chocolate parfait, and Roy had the pasta aisle and made an Asian style spaghetti with an egg on top. The judges for this were Whole Foods employees, and they liked just about all of the dishes, but loved the chocolate parfait the most…..even after Michael claimed to not be much of a dessert expert. So Michael wound up with 5 stars, Art 4.5 stars, Roy 4, and Jonathan 3.5…all of which would go toward their final score.

Hell’s Kitchen: taking things too far?

So if boisterous Gordon Ramsay wasn’t getting wilder and more demanding with each season of “Hell’s Kitchen” on FOX, the producers seem to be making things wild, and bordering on hard to believe…literally. Last night, Season 6 kicked off, and while it’s always fun to see how some of these contestants will react when first meeting Ramsay and having to cook for him, some of the contestants appear to have been planted by producers, and some of the action seems almost as fake as the Hell’s Kitchen video game. But I’m here to recap, so that’s what we’ll do…..

The 16 contestants arrived with an impatient Jean Phillippe waiting and worrying that Ramsay was going to kick his ass for the limo arriving late. JP announces that he’s tired of contestants who don’t know basic skills in the kitchen, so he invites them inside and shows them former contestants on TV screens who offer advice such as, “Make sure the stove is on.” Then Ramsay appeared, first on TV, then in person, and he announced that the winner this season would become the head chef at the Araxi restaurant in Canada. He then shouted to them to go cook their signature dishes, and they herded into the kitchen like a a bunch of wild cattle.
