HD-DVDs hitting stores

Universal released “Serenity” on HD-DVD today; it represents the studio’s first title in the new high-def format. The studio will release “Apollo 13” and “Doom” next week.

Warner Home Video released three HD-DVD titles as well, with “Million Dollar Baby,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “The Last Samurai” hitting shelves today. Warner plans to release a dozen more titles in May. The first titles in the format have a MSRP of $29-$35.

But before you rush out and buy one of the $500 HD-DVD players, be warned that there is a format battle brewing, and it’s not unlike the Beta/VHS war in the ’80s. Blu-ray is HD-DVD’s main competitor and it’s unclear which format will win out. Sony and Pioneer have backed Blu-ray, and once the Playstation 3 hits shelves, the format will get a big boost. The two formats are identical in picture quality, but Blu-ray boasts 67% more capacity and that may put the format over the top. If you remember, Beta actually had a better picture quality, but was limited to two hours of recording time. VHS tapes were capable of recording up to 6 hours, and the picture quality was “good enough” for consumers, allowing the format to ultimately win out.

One thing hindering Blu-ray’s progress is the lack of available players and the initial cost of those players once they are available. Toshiba has a HD-DVD player for $499 but the first Blu-ray player from Samsung will cost $1000. It is doubtful that the PS3, which will double as a Blu-ray player, will have a price tag this high. LG and Samsung each plan to release a player that will play both formats.

These HD discs will be an improvement over current DVDs, but with the uncertainty in the marketplace, I’m going to stick with my trusty progressive-scan DVD player for now.

Holy backstories, Batman!

**MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD**

I don’t know if anyone is paying attention, but “Prison Break” is back from its seemingly never-ending hiatus. After a couple of episodes in the prison to wrap up the near-escape, last night’s excellent episode took a page out of the “Lost” manual and delved into the backstories of most of the main characters.

Three years prior to Michael’s bank robbery attempt, he wasn’t nearly as sympathetic to his older brother’s situation. As he almost has a romantic liaison with Linc’s ex, his brother calls from a pay phone looking for help. Michael doesn’t answer and Lincoln hangs up and goes into the parking garage to kill a man, who we know was already dead. He didn’t do it for the nookie, he did it for the money – the money that he owed a bad guy in order to buy life insurance for his mother. Money that ultimately paid for his younger brother’s schooling. Once Michael hears this (from Veronica) his quest to save his brother begins.

We find out how Fernando, Michael’s cell mate, landed in prison. He took a liking to a young girl, but one of his friends likes her too and calls 911 to rat him out when he saw Fernando go in to rob a convenience store. Irony reigns as Fernando was only robbing the convenience store to buy a ring for his lady. I doubt he’ll find out that it was his buddy that called 911, but if he does, there will be hell to pay.

C-Note, despite appearances, isn’t a thug. He’s a military man, who got a dishonorable discharge after reporting the abuses in an Iraqi prison. His commanding officer sold him out in order to cover it up, and C-Note couldn’t get a job to pay the rent. He resorts to driving a truck with stolen goods and, when caught, he doesn’t give his associates up. That’s how he ends up in Fox River.

The creepiest backstory has to go to T-Bag. He was actually in a “healthy” relationship with a woman (with two children) when she saw his picture on America’s Most Wanted. She turns him in and, when she visits, he vows revenge once he gets out. It was hard to believe T-Bag when he said he truly loved her, but maybe the nut has a heart in there after all.

I was most surprised by how Dr. Sara Tancredi found her way to Fox River. She was a drug-addicted doctor who finally decided to clean herself up after being too doped up to help a bicyclist who got hit by a car. At one of her support groups, she meets a friendly guy who turns out to be the psychotic prison guard Bellick, who tells her about a job opening at Fox River. He wants to take her to dinner…eww…but she successfully fends his gorilla-like advances off.

Getting a peek into the past of all these characters made this episode one of the show’s very best. Fox has something going with “Prison Break” leading into “24” and the network is primed for a strong run on Monday nights for the rest of the season.

Anyone else watching “Sons & Daughters”?

If not, you should be.

This is ABC’s stab at a single-camera family comedy in the vein of “Arrested Development.” Fred Gross (“Significant Others”) stars as Cameron Walker, whose dysfunctional family is fragmented by divorce and personality. The writing is pretty good, and apparently some of the dialogue is improvised.

Eden Sher shines as Carrie Fenton, Cameron’s teenage niece. Here’s a bit of her dialogue as she questions her mom about her parents’ sleeping arrangements:

Carrie: So, when you guys wanna do it… does dad come to your bed, or do you go to his? And if you do it, do one of you spend the night at the other’s one bed? Like a little sleepover?

Don’t be afraid to jump in at this point – it might take a little time to figure out everyone’s relationship, but it’s worth it…Tuesdays on ABC.

It’s not “Arrested Development” but at least it’s on the air.

Upset couples: a rating system

We’ve all seen upsets in the NCAA tournament. Who can forget #15-seed Santa Clara overcoming a 25-0 run to beat Arizona in 1993? But what about romantic upsets? You know, the schlubby guy with the model wife. They’re everywhere on TV, from sitcoms to commercials. But these upsets happen in real life and you need a way to describe the upset couple to your buddies without actually having to rate the guy. Because rating a man’s looks is not a very heterosexual thing to do.

Here’s an example:

12/5 – Sharon (Gwenyth Paltrow) and Hal (Jack Black) from “Shallow Hal”

The favorite is clear, but the spunky 12-seed often finds a way to win. We see these kinds of upsets all the time, so they’re not too surprising.

Jim’s going on a trip

Just as Pam’s wedding planning started to heat up, Jim decided to take a trip, which is going to take place during her wedding. There you have it, folks…this season’s cliffhanger.

Pam seemed truly shocked to hear that Jim was going to miss her wedding, so will the light finally go on before he gets on the plane? Or will she need to walk down the aisle before realizing her mistake?

Maybe the funniest thing about the trip is that he’s going to Australia. Jim is so repulsed by the idea of Pam marrying that Neanderthal, that he literally has to be on the other side of the planet when it happens.

Great stuff.
