R.I.P. – “The West Wing”

NBC’s decision to cancel “The West Wing,” a four-time Emmy winner of best drama, still has me a bit puzzled, but I’m guessing that it was purely a business decision. Even in the last few seasons, “Wing” continued to be one of the best-written and most interesting shows on television, yet its ratings suffered after the network moved the show to Sunday nights. Since it’s smart and consistently critically acclaimed, it’s the kind of show that a network should keep around even if it can only break even financially with it.

Even after creator Aaron Sorkin left the show, the series didn’t really miss a step. In their final season, they successfully intertwined storylines involving President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and the campaign between Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits) and Arnold Vinick (Alan Alda) to replace Bartlet in the White House. But as I’ve watched the show through its seven seasons, while the ensemble cast has been excellent, I’ve realized that the show is really about Bartlett’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Josh Lyman, played brilliantly by Bradley Whitford. Lyman left the White House to convince Santos to run for President and ultimately takes over as his Chief of Staff. Lyman’s romance with former assistant Donna Moss (Janel Moloney) was one of the slowest developing relationships in television history, with the two finally consummating their once-unrequited love during the climax (pun intended) of the Santos campaign.

Last night was the series finale of the show and it was a bittersweet ending. On one hand, it was nice to say goodbye to President Bartlet and his staff, but at the same time I can’t help but wonder how President Santos will deal with the problems of the world. Man, that would make a good show.

The Lost Experience

Fans of the show will want to check out this site, which summarizes all of “the clues, videos, pics and theories related to ‘The Lost Experience’, ABC’s innovative game that takes you deep within the secrets of the hit show LOST.”

I missed it, but my sister told me about a Hanso commercial that directed viewers to this site. Once it does its initial thing, you can click on one of the TVs at a time, click them 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 times and it will kick you to another screen where you get a code. According to ‘The Lost Experience’ website, you’re supposed to enter that code somwhere on this site, to reveal a few secrets about one of Hanso’s executives. (Full disclosure: I couldn’t get it to work.)

“Battlestar” spins off

The Sci-Fi Channel has released plans for a prequel series to their hit series, “Battlestar Galactica.” The series will be entitled “Caprica,” and will take place 50 years before “Galactica.” The plot will center around the events and circumstances that led up to the later series.

[“Caprica”] is being developed and executive produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick. The duo is responsible for reengineering the 1978 Battlestar (masterminded by TV veteran Glen L. Larson) into a smash 2003 miniseries and then into a full-fledged series that’s garnered a massive cult following and just won a Peabody Award.

Like J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon before them, Moore and Eick have been tapped for another series when the series that made them successful is still on the air. Usually this means less attention is paid to the first series, diminishing its quality. “Alias” suffered when Abrams started working on “Lost.” Ditto for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” when Whedon started “Angel.” I think the creativity gets spread too thin and all the shows suffer. Let’s hope that Moore and Eick can keep things fresh.

Is it just me…

…or is it true that Anna Paquin would have made a better Penny Lane? I recently watched “Almost Famous” for maybe the third or fourth time and, while it’s true that Kate Hudson was at her very best in the role, that isn’t saying a whole hell of a lot. Looking at her body of work, it’s pretty sad that “The Skeleton Key” and “About Adam” are her next two highest rated movies.

Instead, imagine Anna Paquin, who played Polexia Aphrodisia in the film, in the role of Penny Lane. Paquin has since proved in “25th Hour,” “The Squid and the Whale” and “Buffalo Soldiers,” that she can play the role of young seductress quite well. She even added a level of sexiness to both X-Men movies, and she has more depth in her little finger than Hudson does in her entire body.

Is this just a blonde/brunette thing?

At least she’s not still pregnant…

I’m not entirely sure why I’m still watching “Alias,” but Sydney finally delivered her baby last week. Considering that her pregnancy pretty much ruined the show, it’s a relief to finally have it over with. I was afraid that they would drag it out for a few more episodes, but maybe now she can get back to some real spy work now without looking completely foolish.

It was also great to see Irina again, and if there’s a better looking fiftysomething actress than Lena Olin, I’d like to meet her.

Help! My hand is glued to this wall!
