Phoebe Cates, Crimestopper Extraordinaire

For anyone wondering how Phoebe Cates has been spending her time ever since jump-starting a million teenage fantasies back in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” she now keeps herself busy running her own boutique, reassuring hubby Kevin Kline that he’s not a washed-up has-been who immediately squandered away all his Oscar-laden promise, and busting criminals just like one of New York’s finest.

When a friend’s apartment was broken into, the items stolen included a $250 gift certificate to Cates’s boutique…which the savvy criminals attempted to use the very next day. Having been alerted to the theft, Cates’s store manager phoned Phoebe, who instructed her to stall the thieves (one of whom, incidentally, claimed he “couldn’t remember” the name of the person who gave him the gift card…even though he also claimed that person was his mother!) long enough for the authorities to arrive. Justice was served, and the friend’s stolen credit cards were also recovered.

Hats off, Pheebs! Job well done. Casting agents need look no further for their star for the inevitable big-screen extravaganza, “Crime Dog McGruff: The Movie.”

Starlets, cover your boobies: Isaac’s back

True to form, Isaac Mizrahi has gone on record as saying that he will not tone down his red carpet antics one iota for Sunday night’s Oscar extravaganza. Widely criticized for his Golden Globe red carpet interviews–which included grabbing Scarlett Johanssen’s breast, questioning various celebrities about their underwear, and asking Eva Longoria about her carpet–Mizrahi remains uncowed by the Academy spokesmen’s remarks that such behavior will be frowned upon Sunday night.

Which is not entirely surprising, actually, given that the Academy’s official threat is that they will be “extraordinarily angry” if the fashion designer does anything deemed inappropriate. That, and that they “cannot predict” what they will do if Isaac goes against their wishes. Well, that’s enough to give anyone pause, right there.

To his credit, Mizrahi has said that the award arrival pre-shows have bored him to tears in the past, and that he was only “asking the questions that interested him,” in an attempt to liven things up.

Mission accomplished. While I’ve tended to skip all but the last half-hour or so of the arrival shows in the past…you can bet I’ll be tuning into E! at 5:30 sharp (Eastern) just to watch this train wreck develop.

You knew it was coming

Just in time for the release of upcoming Tom Hanks blockbuster “The Da Vinci Code,” gay porn outfit PZP Productions will offer some intriguing suppositions about the exact chemical makeup of the paint used to create the famed artist’s masterworks in… “The Da Vinci Load.”

Place your orders now…just like its more respectable doppelganger, “Load” will be made available to the public on May 19. That makes it a few days late to work as a Mother’s Day gift…but moms do tend to love art, especially Renaissance art, so maybe she won’t mind the wait.

It’s official: We’re none too S-M-R-T

I mean S-M-A-R-T. Well, maybe we are, but a recent study indicates that we as a nation can generally only name one of the five freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment, whereas we are more than capable of naming two or more members of the Simpson family.

Come on, give it a try: Name all five freedoms listed in the First Amendment. Can you do it?

Let’s see, there’s freedom of speech…freedom of religion…freedom for goofy-looking guys to date hot chicks…no, wait, that’s not right…

Freedom of the press, freedom to invade other countries whenever they piss off our dad…nope, that’s not it…

Freedom of…Baskin Robbins to call itself 31 Flavors but only offer 29? Freedom of “The Simpsons” staff writers to offend loyal viewers by rehashing and/or contradicting previous storylines, thereby giving Comic Book Guys the world over regular conniption fits? Nope, not that, either.

Crap, this is hard. Whereas the Simpsons question, that’s easy. The immediate family members are as follows: Marge, Homer, Bart, Lisa, Maggie…and sassy Jessica, who is currently giving Homer trouble with her Daisy Dukes and rumors of infidelity.

But then you knew that already. See how smrt we are?

But why do they both have red hair if they’re not actually related?

In what is certain to be delightful scenery-chewing fun, Carol Burnett has signed on to play the Evil Stepmother of America’s favorite high-strung alcoholic widow, Bree Van de Kamp.

So poor Bree had Miss Hannigan for a stepmother growing up. No wonder she’s not right in the head. “You’ll stay up til this dump shiiiiiiiines…like the top of the Chrysler Building!”

It’s a hard-knock life, indeed. No one cares for you a smidge, ’til you’ve spit-polished the fridge.

Should be fun to watch, regardless of the show’s uneven tone this season.
