Shakespeare in Cuba

Former “Shakespeare in Love” star Joseph Fiennes has put a new spin on the celebrities-shilling-products-abroad trend by bringing this brand of capitalism to a Communist country.

Traveling to Havana to launch the Romeo and Juliet brand “Short Churchill” cigar, Fiennes was quoted as saying he “gained a newfound respect for the kind of level of attention, detail, complexity and energy that goes into making a cigar.”

Soon, we expect that he will also gain a newfound respect for a few other things. The level of attention and detail necessary to hide the (illegal) Cuban cigars he undoubtedly absconded with from the U.S. government, for example. Also, the complexity of explaining what “romantic, star-crossed teen lovers” have to do with “smelly, obnoxious wads of cancer-causing foliage.”

And, perhaps later on, the energy involved in speaking through an electrolarynx, tracking his white blood cell count, and getting his affairs in order.

Doherty arrested again

Dammit, if USA Today is going to run headlines like the one above, they owe us all a good juicy story about Shannen Doherty getting into a drunken catfight with Paris Hilton over some greasy Eurotrash shipping heir, or possibly shoplifting seven cases of Evian from Costco in order to wash her hair in it, or running over a small child and then suing him for dinging up her Bentley with his skull.

Instead, the article is about some loser guy named Pete, from some obscure band, whose only real claim to fame is that he once dated raging coke fiend Kate Moss.

Pfffff. Whatever. We want our Shannen Doherty catfight coverage, and we want it now.

You too could be a Hollywood casting director

Okay, let’s pretend you’re a producer for “My Name Is Earl,” and you’ve got an upcoming episode that features a white-trash female bounty hunter angry at having been jilted by America’s favorite lovable ex-con. Whom do you cast?

Come on, this is an easy one. Think of someone who has pretty much only ever played white trash (or, hint, a mentally retarded girl who is not a creepy, poorly-coiffed haiku writer in real life), someone whom even Earl with his relatively low standards would dump the first chance he got.

Give up? The answer appears after the jump.

Juliette Lewis will play the female bounty hunter. Turns out Juliette’s sister Brandy is engaged to Ethan Suplee, who plays Earl’s brother Randy on the show.

See how easy it is to work in casting? Sometimes these roles just cast themselves…and you still get paid the same amount either way. Must be nice.

Vote Quimby…er, Blagojevich

Further cementing his uncanny resemblance to clueless Springfield Mayor Diamond Joe Quimby, Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich apparently believes Jon Stewart is one of our nation’s leading serious newscasters. Right up there with Kent Brockman and, oh, maybe Jiminy Glick, we’re guessing.

The Land of Lincoln’s proud governor agreed to do an interview with “The Daily Show” without realizing the program deals in political satire, and was puzzled to be asked whether he was “the gay governor” and encouraged to address the issue of contraception by pretending to be “a hot 17-year-old.” Isn’t there at least an intern on the governor’s team who could have lent him a clue about the nature of Stewart’s show?

Here’s a hint for next time, Diamond Rod B: if the program airs on a network called “Comedy Central,” there’s a very good chance that it is not a legitimate news broadcast. Just FYI.
