The Biggest Loser: Let the Gameplay Begin

Look, we all knew this was coming. “The Biggest Loser: Families” became a team competition again, with blue vs. black. They couldn’t just eliminate two people at a time and have the season end in October. It’s just that when I hear Alison Sweeney say, “But wait, there’s one more twist,” it just makes me angry and want to lose interest. Add the gameplay into it, and the show starts to lose its purpose as well. But anyway, I’m here to recap last night’s episode either way, so here goes….

It began with the first challenge, which was to determine who would be putting the teams together. The task? Eating donuts, brownies, and peanut butter cups in the dark. Whoever ate the most calories got to choose who would be on Bob’s blue team and who would be on Jillian’s black team. Heba and Phil were clearly trying to outdo each other, while some others decided it wasn’t worth it to eat any of the foods they came to the ranch to avoid. Heba won by eating a brownie that was good for like 400 calories. And since she was already pissed that her husband went home last week, she was even more pissed at Phil and split up him and his wife Amy on the teams.

The teams? Bob had Heba, Vicky, Amy P, Amy C and Brady. Jillian had Renee, Colleen, Michelle, Phil and Shellay. So essentially Heba broke up not just Phil and Amy, but Amy C and Shellay as well. Whatever. I have no idea what the strategy was, but it sure as hell pissed off Bob and Jillian Continue reading »

The Biggest Loser: Pulling The Same Crap

Well, we knew it was coming. NBC’s “The Biggest Loser: Couples” is soon going to be an individual competition again. It’s already halfway there. Like I’ve said, I don’t mind that, but don’t call it something it isn’t, and most of all, don’t confuse us so that we wind up not caring about the show.
Seriously.

Anyway, last night was the one-hour conclusion to the show that began before the presidential debates on Tuesday. So basically it was the last-chance workout for the week, a product placement bit with Subway, the weigh in and the elimination.

Coleen went first and lost three pounds, or 1.54%. That meant if she was below the yellow line, sshe was automatically eliminated since she was the only member left from her team (her dad was sent home last week). Then as each team weighed in and was losing 9, 9, 8, 8 and 12 pounds, I started to feel worried for Coleen. However, the orange team of Ed and Heba only lost 1.4%–Heba dropped 8 pounds but Ed did not lose any weight. Yikes.

So Ed and Heba, who by the way are newlyweds, had to decide who would stay at the ranch and who would go home alone. Heba is tall, but weighs almost 300 pounds….so Ed wanted her to stay to get in the best shape so that they could give themselves the best chance to have children. It was touching and sad, but the right decision.

They showed Ed at home, and he has lost 85 pounds to date, down from 335 to 250. Wow! Sometimes what’s lost in all the gameplay and rules changes is the fact that this show really helps people transform themselves and lose a ton of weight. And that’s why we watch, to root for them all. Tito, get me a tissue please……

The Biggest Loser: Interrupted

Last night’s episode of “The Biggest Loser” was cut short by two guys arguing about the economy and foreign policy and health care. Imagine that! Seriously though, the presidential debate gave NBC an excuse to air an hour of the show last night and the concluding hour tonight. In other words, the weigh-in and elimination will occur tonight.

You can’t tell me that the network couldn’t squeeze everything into 60 minutes, but well, there are sponsors to keep happy. So last night all we had were Vicky of the brown team talking about her bad knees that prevent her from running, Phil and Amy (red team?) on their trip home to see their kids (from winning last week’s challenge), and Shellay and Amy (blue team) working out with Jillian one on one (from the first week’s challenge prize). Jillian made it clear who the boss was too…..she rode Shellay really tough because Shellay was wimping out on the exercise machines. Damn, I’d hate for Jillian to be my trainer, but there is no doubt she gets results.

The challenge last night was one in which everyone had to hang from a beam in water, but then had to hang on as the water became lower and lower. It was grueling, but it came down to young Amy and Vicky, and Vicky won, after about two hours! Vicky’s prize was a care package from home and a family theme park vacation. But host Alison Sweeney told Vicky that she could choose one other team to receive a care package, and she not surprisingly chose Amy’s blue team. Meanwhile, the weigh-in was approaching, and Jillian was shown barking at her team some more, telling them they didn’t have the drive that her team last season had. Ouch.

So tonight, the weigh-in, elimination (once again just one teammate will go home) and probably 700 commercials. I can’t wait. See you tomorrow with the results!

The Biggest Loser: Gambling Doesn’t Pay

Last night’s episode of “The Biggest Loser” began with trainers Bob and Jillian talking about how Week 2 is historically a “plateau” week on the show, and that the average contestant loses just 2 % of their weight the second week as their bodies adjust to the sudden change in lifestyle.

With that, host Alison Sweeney brought the teams together and each had a colored ping pong paddle to match their team color. Alison offered $10,000 to anyone who gambled that they could lose a certain percentage of weight, but it was done auction-style….meaning one team bid 1 %, the next 1.2 % etc. It went all the way up to 2.4% for the yellow team of Colleen and Jerry. So, if they were able to lose that percentage, or 14 pounds between them, they would win 10 grand. If not, they would automatically be below the yellow line this week. They were fired up, but their trainer Jillian was pissed. She knows the plateau all too well, and she vowed to work Colleen extra hard (Jerry still has to limit his activity for health reasons).

Then came the challenge, which was a water slide game. Each team had to slide down a slip and slide Continue reading »

The Biggest Loser Returns

NBC’s hit reality show, “The Biggest Loser,” returned in fine form last night to begin its sixth season. This version is “Biggest Loser: Families,” but they can’t fool me. Last season it was “couples” and then the producers kept changing things up–by changing the rules, the teams and pretty much everything else, and I admit that they lost me. After about eight weeks I just didn’t care anymore. That, and the gameplay got out of hand, especially with those two brash and whiney brothers from Boston.

I hope that this season will be different, and while they did eliminated a team last night, I did the math. There are now seven couples remaining, and unless the season is going to end in October, they are going to make this an individual competition at some point, or add more teams. But whatever, the fact remains that the show does inspire and motivate people to lose weight, and when it’s “on” it’s one of the best reality shows on any network.

Last night’s two-hour premiere began with trainers Bob and Jillian traveling to each contestants’ city to let them know the good news Continue reading »
