“The Dilemma” trailer

Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder star in the latest from Ron Howard, who Dustin Rowles terms “one of the meh-est directors of all time.” He’s made some good movies and a number of very decent time-killers and in many ways has been a highly admirable figure in the business as a whole. Still, I find it kind of hard to disagree when it comes to his work as a director. And, yeah, the January release date doesn’t bode very well. Nevertheless, as Rowles’ commenters point out, Howard’s early sleeper hits, “Night Shift” and “Splash,” showed Howard could do comedy very well.

As for the premise, I’ve seen this one in about a million advice columns and I would be absolutely terrified to be in, so I guess it strikes a chord or two. As for what I’d do, all I know for sure is that I’d want to be damn sure I had my facts straight before going forward. Fortunately, my friends, and their significant others have proven to be mostly exceedingly dull — in a good way I mean. I live in un-Peyton Place.

Mad Men 4.9 – Here’s to you, Mrs. Blankenship…

Another week, another great episode of “Mad Men.” The show has really settled into a solid groove of awesomeness over the course of the past several weeks. Not that it isn’t always pretty darned awesome, but ever since Episode 4.6, it’s been mindbogglingly good.

Given the title of this blog, I feel obliged to start things off by discussing the late, great Mrs. Ida Blankenship. I’ve spent much of this season under the presumption that Bert Cooper would be the one to die in the saddle at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Not that I’m rooting for Robert Morse to leave the show, but it just seemed like we hadn’t been seeing a whole lot of him this year, so I thought that perhaps that Bert’s days were numbered…and maybe they still are, but I certainly never expected that Mrs. Blankenship would beat him to the punch.

Of Mrs. Blankenship’s death, Roger quipped, “She died as she lived: surrounded by the people she answered phones for.” Similarly, the character departed in much the same way that she existed: as a punchline. There was some straight-up “Weekend at Bernie’s” schtick going on in the background as Don desperately tried to maintain his meeting with the gentlemen from Fillmore Auto Parts, and even though that isn’t necessarily the sort of thing that I expect when I tune in to “Mad Men,” it doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy it. If I laugh harder at a Don Draper line this season than “I’d have my secretary do it, but she’s dead,” I’ll be very surprised. Still, Mrs. Blankenship’s demise did also lead to a sad, sweet moment from Bert, when he poetically described her as “an astronaut,” and it served to remind Roger of his mortality, which ultimately found him living life to the fullest…but we’ll get to that.

Boardwalk Empire 1.1 – Here We Go, Boyo…

Wait a minute, didn’t I just spend last week talking about how excited I was to be back to only having one show to blog on Sunday nights? Well, yes, I did, but it’s hard to resist taking a weekly look at a show with the kind of pedigree that “Boardwalk Empire” has, especially when its creators aren’t afraid to send out advance screeners of its episodes. Granted, that may change once the show has gotten on its feet, but as it stands right now, I’m in a position where I can watch at least the first six episodes in advance, thereby leaving me only “Mad Men” to actually blog on Sunday nights.

Let’s get started, shall we?

Meet Enoch Thompson, known to his friends…and, indeed, some of his enemies…as Nucky. Described by HBO’s website as “equal parts corrupt politician and gangster (and equally comfortable in either role),” Thompson is the much beloved treasurer of Atlantic City, New Jersey. And why wouldn’t they love him? He’s the kind of guy who promises everything to everyone, even if it involves telling complete lies to make them happy. Indeed, when we first see him, he’s lecturing before the Women’s Temperance League, praising the beginning of prohibition…and, minutes later, he’s having dinner with the mayor, the city council, and several key law enforcement officials – one of whom is his own brother – and telling them how he’s found a way to keep Atlantic City “as wet as a mermaid’s twat.” I’m sure that joke would’ve gone over like gangbusters amongst the suffragettes.

Speaking of the suffragettes, during his speech, two faces stand out in the crowd…or, rather, one in the crowd and one on the outskirts.

First, there’s a young lady in the audience who’s eying Nucky quite intently. That’s Margaret Schroeder. She’s a good Irish girl who’s married with two children and a third on the way, but her husband’s going to be out of a job come the end of tourist season, and she was so affected by Nucky’s speech about how he and his family once had to eat wharf rats to survive (a tale which was either heavily embellished or, more likely, completely fabricated) that she later decides to venture forth to Nucky’s office and ask if she can find work for his husband when the time comes. He agrees, hands her a wad of cash to get her family through the hard times in the interim, and provides her with a ride home. The end result: her husband gets pissed, takes the money, knocks her around, and goes off to gamble at Nucky’s establishment, ostensibly just to rub it in his face. In turn, Nucky rubs his face into a table. Repeatedly. So what does the guy do in response? He heads home and beats his wife to the point that she loses the baby. As soon as word gets back to Nucky, he has the bastard killed…and, frankly, it’s hard to imagine anyone mourning the son of a bitch.

Now, let’s get back to that Women’s Temperance League meeting, so we can address the identity of the young lad hovering in the shadows.

Meet Jimmy Darmody. He’s been part of Nucky’s inner circle for many moons, and after fighting for his country in World War I, he’s now back at Nucky’s side. Once he was a boy, but now he is a man…and he’s looking to be acknowledged as such. Unsurprisingly, it’s hard for Nucky and his guys to see him that way. Jimmy’s tensions rise to the surface when he and Nucky visit a bootlegging operation in the basement of a local funeral home. After Jimmy takes a swig of some formaldehyde-laced liquor, fists and bullets start flying, with one of the latter going through the basement ceiling and straight into a funeral. (I laughed really hard at that, by the way. And after I realized that the bullet hadn’t actually hit anyone, I laughed even harder.) Upon exiting the premises, Jimmy and Nucky finally have it out, with Nucky breaking out his wad of bills and Jimmy dismissing it, saying that he doesn’t want money, he wants an opportunity. After being picked up by the revenuers, though, Jimmy decides to make his own opportunity, teaming with some of Johnny Torrio’s boys – one of whom is a young up-and-comer by the name of…wait for it…Al Capone – to step in and swipe a shipment of Canadian Club intended for Nucky. Later, Jimmy meets up with an understandably pissed-off Nucky, and Nucky is left dumbfounded by the cajones of his former protege, who informs him that he “can’t be half a gangster anymore,” then gives him his cut.

Weekend boxoffice: Ben Affleck steals the weekend, but “Easy A” hangs onto to its virtue

A surprise this week. A film that seemed to skew towards an older and more male audience actually grabbed more box office lucre than a high-concept comedy aimed largely — albeit on a weekend where no one made anything close to a cinematic mint.

He might look down in the pic above, but Ben Affleck — whose taken his share of sometimes deserved and sometimes not so deserved lumps as an actor over the years — has something to celebrate today. To be specific, the cowriter-director-star’s heist drama, “The Town,” swiped an estimated $23.8 million for Warner Brothers according to Box Office Mojo’s weekend chart. I’m guessing that the film got a boost from pent up demand for a the kind of plot-centric thriller we adult males seem to crave, as well as the budding  potential superstar presences of Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, and Blake Lively, not to mention female lead Rebecca Miller. Since older people usually pay a bit more attention to critics, it’s actually possible that the unusually good reviews helped here.

If Cinemascore means anything — and I’m not all that sure that it means all that much — “The Town” might have also gotten a boost from word of mouth, since Anne Thompson tell us it got a better than average B+ all around. Thompson also quotes Warner’s distribution chief Dan Fellman, saying that the studio is looking ahead to award season for the thriller. Moreover, Fellman also reminds us that the film is the largest September opening in Warner’s history (that is to say, September kind of sucks for box office). Though it’s not the kind of movie that usually wins Oscars, the loosened up Best Picture category certainly helps a well-reviewed and reasonably popular film’s chances.

Emma Stone in The PG-13 not-having-sex high school comedy with promising youngster Emma Stone,Easy A,” which was supposed to be #1 as of Thursday night, didn’t quite get there. However, seeing as its budget is reportedly $31 million less than the actually rather modestly budgeted “The Town,” it is by far the most profitable film of this frame with  respectable estimated receipts of $18.2  and an extremely respectable $8 million budget. It’s another fiscal win for Sony/Screen Gems, which has been on a sort of hot streak of late.

The M. Night Shymalan-produced “Devil” took the hindmost of the top 3 with a less than spectacular $12.58 million for Universal, which by now is used to disappointments. Though not directed by Shymalan, the PG-13 film was promoted as if it was and Uni and the man they call “Night” may finally be paying the price for all the almost universally disliked but oddly successful films that bore the once hugely promising filmmaker’s name. Anne Thompson wonders if the two other scheduled films drawn from stories by Shymalan to be directed by up-and-comers on low budgets, “The Night Chronicles,” will happen now. Mr. S., I grew up watching Rod Serling productions, I know Rod Serling’s work. You’re no Rod Serling.

The weekend’s other new release proved that audiences can spot a cheaply made 3D animated family film rather easily for something that is likely a far, far cry from Pixar or Dreamworks Animation. “Alpha and Omega” came in below the predictably sinking-like-a-stone-in-week #2 “Resident Evil: Afterlife” with an anemic $9.2 million.

A number of new films came out in limited release this week. The most impressive per-screen average of the week was $30,000 for the Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation, “Never Let Me Go.” The British science-fiction romantic drama earned $120,000 on four screens for Fox Searchlight, though it’s muted reviews may dim its Oscar hopes, which is really the only root to major success for a film like this at present. The highly buzzed, probable documentary (there are doubters, though everyone agrees it’s no “I’m Still Here“), “Catfish,” may have better Oscar hopes if it reassures the Academy that it really and truly is a documentary. It did well this weekend for Rogue with a $255,000 in only 12 theaters.

The “Tangled” trailer asks an old question…

Just because you can do something, should you? In this case, the latest non-Pixar Disney CGI animation is “Tangled,” a renamed action-comedy version of “Rapunzel.” I don’t know how I missed this earlier in the week, but here it is now. My reactions are below the embed.

Okay, so its heroic leads are very much in the tradition of 2D animated princesses and princes and it thereby avoids the dreaded “Polar Express” uncanny valley most, but not all, of the time. On the other hand, I can’t think of a single thing this gains by being in CGI, except for the perception of greater commercial credibility.  (I’m still far from convinced that audiences really care that much whether a movie is in traditional or CGI animation, as long as they like the way it looks.) Sure, the more traditionally cartoony characters look very good, but wouldn’t they perhaps look even better as traditional cartoons?

Tell me, anyone reading, one single thing in the trailer below that was in any way not slightly degraded by being in this style of animation and one single thing — other than throwing stuff at the audience — that couldn’t be down with hand-drawn animation? It’s great that they were able to do this while mostly avoiding the uncanny valley but, with this kind of material, why not just bypass it completely? I’d really like an answer other than “audiences expect CGI now.” That simply is not a good enough reason and I truly hope that regular moviegoers aren’t that shallow and set in their ways.  In any case, it’ll be interesting to compare the grosses of this to “The Princess and the Frog.”
