TCA Tour, Day 2: “Crash”

Hey, wanna see a panel come to a screeching halt before it even gets rolling? Just ask Ira Steven Behr to step up to the mike.

I’m a big fan of Behr’s work, particularly on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “The 4400,” but, holy cow, Starz main man Bill Hamm has got to still be kicking himself over his decision to say, “Before we open it up for questions, I want to ask Ira to give us some details about the direction of the second season and some of our exciting additions to the cast.” There’s no way I’m going to offer up everything Behr had to say, but I’ll tell you that, having copied and pasted the text of his comments into a Word document, it totals out at over 600 words, and his halting delivery made it seem as though it lasted forever. I’d actually been excited about the panel, which was to provide details about the upcoming second season of “Crash,” but I quickly found myself within an inch of standing up and yelling, “Geez louise, Ira, wrap it up, wouldja?”

Eventually, of course, Ira did wrap it up, and things moved onto the most obvious new development about the new season of “Crash”: the addition of Eric Roberts to the cast.

This isn’t the first time that Eric Roberts and Dennis Hopper have worked together, but it’s the only time that Roberts is interested in talking about, even if Hopper seemed to enjoy needling his new co-star about it.

Dennis Hopper: We did a movie together, too.
Eric Roberts: We don’t want to talk about that, Dennis.
Dennis Hopper: Okay. It was the first…
Eric Roberts: We don’t talk about that, Dennis. Terrible movie. (Shrugs) I made a couple.
Dennis Hopper: I made more than a couple!

Actually, Roberts tried his best not to say anything at all during the panel, as was further evidenced when a writer asked him and Hopper about the differences between working on television versus working in motion pictures.

Dennis Hopper: Well, you don’t have as much time, but I’ve worked in a lot of independent films through the years, so it doesn’t get that much different. I’ve had a lot of dialogue in this series, so that’s been the most difficult part for me. Beyond that, we work 15, sometimes 17 hours, but we have a great crew. Never heard anyone complain, except me. But nobody listens to me, so it’s okay. But the crew and the cast are just wonderful. Yeah, I’m having a joyous time, even though it’s difficult. But since we’re shooting other episodes, we have our three days off and four days off, you know, every two weeks, whatever. So it’s a nice schedule.

TCA Tour, Day 2: “Glenn Martin, DDS”

Last month, I had a chat with Kevin Nealon in conjunction with his most recent gig for TBS (he’s the standing host of their funniest-commercials specials), and during the conversation, he dropped a little bit of info about his upcoming stop-motion animated Nick at Nite series, “Glenn Martin, DDS”:

“It’s about a family who’s traveling around the country in an RV called the Molar Express. I play Glenn Martin, DDS, and I’m working my practice out of the RV. My wife is played by Catherine O’Hara, and we have a couple of kids. It’s a dysfunctional family, and it’s along the same lines of ‘Family Guy’ and ‘The Simpsons.’ We go to different parts of the country each week and get into a bunch of trouble. It’s stop-motion animation, and they really did a good job with it. I was really impressed with the results.”

It’s a good thing I was able to get Kevin’s comments on the show during our conversation, however, as the TCA panel dedicated to the series was very much under the control of the show’s executive producer, the one and only Michael Eisner. The show was introduced to the crowd by Cyma Zarghami, President of Nickelodeon and MTV Networks Kids and Family, and we would soon know why she was smirking when she asked Eisner, “Michael, do you want to say something before we start?” Worse, most of the things he had to say really didn’t serve to illuminate us very much about the show…or, at least, no more so than Kevin already had last month.

We did, however, learn at least one new thing: “Glenn Martin, DDS” will have a laugh track.

Co-creator Eric Fogel acknowledged that it was something they had experimented with a little bit before finally deciding to go with it, but “we all just really enjoyed the experience with the laugh track. Somehow it seemed like it elevated the experience, made the characters feel more real in a way.”

“It’s kind of tongue in cheek, too,” said Nealon, “because you know there’s not a live audience watching it. I think it goes with the whole feel of the show.”

“I like to imagine that there’s actually an audience of clay puppets out there laughing at the show,” added Fogel.

I miss the old days of stop-motion animation just enough to be curious about the series on general principle, and while Kevin Nealon might not be my favorite “Weekend Update” anchor, I do think he’s a funny guy. In other words, I’ll be tuning in when “Glenn Martin, DDS” premieres on Nick at Nite on August 17th.

TCA Tour, Day 1: “Dark Blue”

There was a certain amount of exasperation amongst the critics about Turner’s decision to offer up a panel for a show that’s already been on the air for a few weeks (“Dark Blue”) rather than one for an upcoming series that we’re all rather excited about (“Men of a Certain Age,” starring Ray Romano, Scott Bakula, and Andre Braugher), and to be fair, I was feeling it myself a little bit. I get that, when you’ve got a Jerry Bruckheimer production amongst your stable of shows, you want to be sure that you’re promoting it as much as possible, but…it’s already on the air. Worse, it was like pouring salt in the wound to show us a clip from “Men of a Certain Age” that piqued our interest even further about that series.

Oh, well. So be it.

If you haven’t caught “Dark Blue” yet…well, it only made its debut on July 15th, so it’s not too late to get onboard. I was so busy trying to get ready for the TCA tour that I never had a chance to write it up for Premium Hollywood, but here’s the trailer for the series, to give you an idea what it’s all about:

“Dark Blue” was created by Doug Jung, who had previously worked on “Big Love.” It’s a bit of a change of pace, obviously, but as he admitted, “You could say that about polygamy for everyone.”

Still, the two series have more in common than one might immediately think.

“Mommy XXX” learns about “Female Parts”

Taking one’s daughter to her first gynecologist’s visit isn’t something any parent looks forward to. But what about when you’re a former porn star who has more experience with the, uh, plumbing than most moms? Find out the answer to that question in “Female Parts,” the latest episode of “Mommy XXX,” the Crackle reality series that follows adult star Demi Delia as she navigates the treacherous waters of single parenthood. Rest in peace, Uncle Walter

Walter Cronkite, the last bastion of TV journalists who actually had the respect of print journalists (and you can bet that there were never that many of those to begin with), has died at the age of 92. What can you really say about “Uncle Walter” that hasn’t already been said? The man was a legend in his field, a man who was declared “the most trusted man in America” by more than one opinion poll, and he offered a presence at “The CBS Evening News” that no one has ever been able to match.

Cronkite was an easy target for impressionists, with his straightforward delivery and his standard tag line, “And that’s the way it is,” but he possessed a sense of humor, making an appearance on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” which ranks right up there with the funeral of Chuckles the Clown as one of the most memorable episodes in that show’s history. I actually thought about him very recently, when the animated film “We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story,” was reissued on DVD, as he provided the voice of Captain Neweyes, a scientist from the future. Come to think of it, another of his voiceover roles – that of Benjamin Franklin on “Liberty’s Kids” – turned up on DVD recently as well.

But, of course, it’s none of these things that will prove to be Cronkite’s legacy. It’s his work as a newsman. So let us remember two of his greatest moments as we bid him farewell…
