Paramount sends us a little “Up in the Air”

“Juno” director Jason Reitman’s latest dramedy, “Up in the Air,” just finished wowing the crowds at the Telluride Film Festival, and now Paramount has released a new clip from the film so everyone can get an idea of what the fuss is all about.

Starring George Clooney as corporate hatchet man Ryan Bingham, “Air” tells the story of what happens when a man who’s made his career out of being a sort of professional grim reaper (that’d be Clooney, of course) feels the sting himself — and right on the cusp of achieving his long-held goal of collecting five million frequent-flyer miles, no less. With a cast that includes Clooney, Vera Farmiga, and Jason Bateman — not to mention Reitman writing the script and sitting behind the lens — we know we can safely expect plenty of the seemingly effortless chemistry and smart, downplayed humor on display in this clip. Watch it now — and mark your calendars for December 4.

Charlize Theron is hilarious — and I guess Zach Galifiankis is too

Things have been rather dour around these parts. These recent sad events have collectively cast a black cloud over our dear site. In an effort to change this sentiment, if only briefly, I present you with Zach Galifianakis’ new edition of “Between Two Ferns.” Here, Zach interviews Charlize Theron on his skewed version of a talk show and she proves to be the funniest guest he’s had thus far. Galifiankis, as always, is great, but Theron showcases a comedic talent I didn’t know she had.

Enjoy.

NBC takes us behind the scenes for the new season of “Parks and Recreation”

It’s still undeniably in the shadow of “The Office,” but Amy Poehler’s “Parks and Recreation” really started coming into its own during its first-season run this year — and if we’ve learned one thing from creators Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, it’s that even if their shows take a little time getting up to speed, they make for appointment viewing once they hit their stride. In other words, the best is yet to come — and with season two set to premiere September 17 at 8:30, we don’t have to wait long to see it.

And actually, you don’t even have to wait until September 17, thanks to NBC’s behind-the-scenes peek at the upcoming season, which we’ve helpfully embedded below. Have you missed Leslie Knope, Tom Haverford, and Ann Perkins? Hit “play” on this clip and whet your appetite for more uncomfortable situations, awkward pauses, and laughs!

Watch the “Boondock Saints II” trailer!

After 10 years, countless delays, and one documentary detailing its writer/director’s legendary rise and fall in Hollywood, The Boondock Saints is finally getting a sequel. Improbably, Troy Duffy is back behind the cameras — and most of his original cast has returned — for a second installment, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, scheduled to reach theaters October 30. The official synopsis sums it up as follows:

The film is the continuation of writer/director Troy Duffy’s tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery). The two have been in deep hiding with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives. When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible. With a new partner in crime (Clifton Collins Jr., “Star Trek”) and a sexy FBI operative (Julie Benz, TV’s “Dexter”) hot on their trail…the Saints are back!

Sound interesting? Well, you don’t have to wait until the end of October to get your first look, because Sony has released a trailer for your enjoyment. Welcome back, MacManuses!

Are we excited about “The Descent: Part 2”?

The Descent

Here’s the synopsis taken from the movie’s IMDB page:

The sequel will continue the story of Sarah, who as the only survivor of an all-female caving expedition gone horrifically wrong, suffers severe psychological trauma. Unable to speak, she accompanies a rescue team back to the cave, but events once again take a sinister turn.

THE DESCENT 2 picks up immediately after the events depicted in THE DESCENT Sarah (MacDonald), emerges alone from a cave system following an expedition with her five friends in the Appalachian mountains. Distraught, injured and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Skeptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah’s psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines forces her back into the caves to help locate the rest of the group. Trapped by falling rocks, the rescue party are driven deep into the caverns, and as one by one the fate of the missing girls is revealed, Sarah is forced to confront her deepest fears.

By the look of the trailer below, the sequel appears to be much more like your standard thriller than the character-driven original. What made the original so great was the underlying tension between the characters of Sarah and Juno. The scares and violent scenes didn’t just shock you, but they each actually contributed to the plot because of the subtext that existed. The original’s writer/director Neil Marshall didn’t have his hand in the creative process of “The Descent: Part 2”, and it shows. I’ll still check it out, but I’m not expecting much. To this day, “The Descent” is only the movie I’ve seen where a good portion of the audience walked out of the theater because of how frightened they were.
