“I did not know he existed until he didn’t.”

Caesar is starting to show his true colors. Seemingly honorable and evenhanded, he indirectly hires Titus to assassinate an enemy of his, ultimately forcing Lucius to save Titus from certain death in the Arena. I doubt Lucius will be able to go back to being a magistrate after his public display of affection for his friend, but anything can happen in Rome.

Things are also moving forward on the Brutus front. When graffiti depicting Brutus betraying Caesar appears throughout Rome, Caesar asks him to leave the city for a year to govern Macedonia. Brutus is insulted and vows to help Cassius do what is needed to remove Caesar from power. Anyone who paid attention in their high school English classes knows where this is heading.

Fox, you bastard…

Congratulations, Fox, for ruining yet another good thing; but at least this time we can’t say we didn’t see it coming. After cutting the second season episode order for the award-winning, AWARD-WINNING, “Arrested Development” from 22 to 18 last year, network doofus Fox has done it again. This time cutting back the third season to just 13 episodes, it looks like the beloved comedy series has recieved its final blow. Maybe it’s time for a premium channel like HBO to come down and swoop up the rights to the series, or perhaps Fox’s sister channel FX could use a ratings boost. What do you think?

And then there were none…

The first season had pretty boy Boone tumble to his own death, and now, his stepsister Shannon looks to have shared the same unsavory fate. Before you know it, the show’s writers will have weeded out all of the characters who no longer serve a purpose to the story by way of an ill-fated death scene. And the cause of her death, you ask? A gunshot wound from a trigger happy Ana Lucia who somehow managed to confuse the well-kept rich girl for one of the supposed savage Others. Nice detective work there Nancy Drew.

Meanwhile, another character seems to be drawing closer to his end of the line, namely Charlie, who has traded in his A-Team badge for a chance to play Mr. Mom to Claire’s baby. What the heck was all that fuss about? It’s pretty obvious that Claire is unfit to be a mother, heck she didn’t even want the darned thing in the first place, so why did Charlie have to go all psycho on her? Maybe he’s back on the crank, and that’s what’s driving him over the edge, or maybe he’s just trying a little too hard to impress Claire. Either way, he’s completely lost my respect as a meaningful character on the show until he shapes up and re-enlists as part of the A-team; his interactions with Hurley were the best, and now the big guy has no one else to hang out with but Rose, who will surely leave him in the wind as soon as she catches word of her husband’s arrival at camp.

And in one final note, Mr. Echo might just be the coolest new character on the show, and I cannot wait to see what happens when he hooks up with Locke for some serious “Lord of the Flies” jungle action. These guys are definite survivors in Darwin’s book, but it’ll be interesting to see who gets the axe next. JJ Abrams and Co. have made it pretty clear that no one is safe from here on out.

Hiding out? Stay off of IM

I just got over the fact that the Department of Corrections allows death row inmates to work unsupervised “PI” detail. Now “Prison Break” wants me to believe that an otherwise crafty Veronica is going to have her IM service up and running while she’s hiding out in a cabin in the woods. This is the same woman who had the foresight to give her nephew bogus directions (at the same time sending the correct directions via a text message) when she suspected that the Secret Service baddies were listening in on the conversation. Now she logs onto IM and gives away her location? Come on.

Where’s a good doctor when you need one?

It’s a damn shame that Rex is dead, because this show desperately needs medical attention. The backlash that started building with that Vanity Fair article earlier this year has escalated, and Marc Cherry and his writers are only adding fuel to the fire with episodes like this one.

Let’s start with Mike, who went to great lengths to emphasize his “one strike and you’re out” attitude towards interpersonal relationships in an earlier episode – for the sole purpose of bringing that chicken home to roost when he finds out that Susan sent Zach to Utah on the sly.

One problem, though: Mike has violated this very credo on multiple occasions in the past. What about Deirdre, the mother of his child? Drug addiction isn’t considered a strike? And what about Zach himself – with whom Mike is so dead set on reconciling? There was a tiny incident with the young scamp holding Susan at gunpoint – but apparently that pitch was just below the knees as well. So, to recap: hostage-taking is perfectly fine, but give a kid a few bucks to go visit the Osmonds, and yer outta here.

And speaking of inconsistencies, will they ever allow Lynette to keep her own spine, instead of forcing her to do the Hokey Pokey with it? It’s in. It’s out. It’s back in. This week, it was out, with Lynette keeping uncharacteristically mum when boss Nina makes catty remarks about Lynette’s wardrobe in front of the entire staff. Remember, when last we saw Lynette, she was confident enough to clad herself quite scantily and dance atop a bar in order to set some boundaries with her boss…but now she’s afraid to confront Nina for acting like a Heather?

Apparently, it’s all about convenience, as far as the writers are concerned, and it wasn’t convenient for Lynette to have her spine this week. Maybe next week, if the Emmy winner works extra hard, and promises to sit by the writers at lunch.

Similarly, it apparently wasn’t convenient to show the African-American family at all this week, and follow up that juicy “Of Mice and Men” setup, because…well, the episode was running long, and something had to go. They certainly couldn’t have cut the lengthy and asinine storyline that put Paul Young back in his house, free as a bird, or the one that had Gabrielle inexplicably spurn the advances of the attractive and wealthy lawyer who is clearly a better match for her than Carlos.

And they definitely couldn’t have cut the scenes we least wanted to see: the ones with Bree getting hives whenever she and George are in danger of (ew!) getting physical, and the one that suggested that George may have taken advantage of her while she was passed out. As trying as Bree’s character can be at times, no one wants to see (or think about) her getting raped. That’s just creepy – and it’s out of place for a show that continues to position itself as a comedy.

Dr. Van de Kamp, if you can hear us, this show needs a shot of real humor, a dose of adrenaline, and a massive infusion of consistency…STAT!
