ABC announces potential “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff

The network is producing a two-hour special focusing on the former Mrs. McDreamy, neonatal surgeon Addison Montgomery, which, depending on viewer response, will serve as a back-door pilot for a new series featuring actress Kate Walsh.

Taye Diggs has also signed on for the pilot, and the show’s writers are now eagerly accepting nominations for the handsome former “Daybreak” and “Rent” star’s nickname. Since “McDreamy” and “McSteamy” have already been spoken for by members of the “Grey’s” cast, current frontrunners include “McSmoothie” and “That Guy Who Gave Stella Her Groove Back.” We’re hoping they come up with something a little juicier.

Is Letterman feuding with Paul Shaffer?

Reports from the set of David Letterman’s recent “Ventriloquist Week” stunt indicate the prickly host is growing increasingly annoyed with the bald bandleader’s interruptions and spotlight-stealing antics. After one recent, particularly lengthy interruption by Shaffer, Letterman was visibly displeased…and Paul was noticeably more reticent the next day.

Rumor has it that Shaffer’s change in demeanor is a direct result of the host having one of his minions read Shaffer the riot act, but it’s also possible the bald hipster caught sight of one of Letterman’s upcoming top ten lists: “Top Ten Uses for an Obnoxious Bandleader’s Corpse.”

American Idol: Four Are Gone, Along With a Few of My Brain Cells

Last night’s results show for “American Idol” sent four contestants packing, and there were a few surprises and a few not-so-surprises. The night started off with host Ryan Seacrest announcing some of the stars that will take part in the show during the season, including Diana Ross, Jon Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Tony Bennett, Martina McBride and Barry Gibb. Can you say “Big Budget?”

Then we had to witness one of the most disturbing Idol moments ever–a group performance of Tears for Fears’ “Sowing the Seeds of Love.” Not only can I never listen to this song the same way again, I’m pretty sure that performance of it has scarred my inner being, causing a few of my brain cells to drop to the floor like sawdust from a workbench.

Then they took the first row of guys, most of which were awful on Tuesday night, and one by one Ryan let them know they were safe….Brandon, Sundance (are you kidding me?), Chris R, Nick, and Blake. Then when he got to the barefoot wonder, Paul Kim, Ryan was quick to say adios…none of that “after the break” crap, just “Paul, you are going home.” Then we had to endure Kim singing that Wham song again, and it was even worse last night. Maybe it’s because he was wearing shoes.

Then the girls went, and with six of them lined up and Antonella on the end, you had to know what was coming, right? Well, these producers are sneaky. All safe–Jordin, Stephanie, Sabrina, Leslie, Melinda and Antonella. Then Ryan went to the first girl in the front row, Amy Krebs, and sent her packing. Amy isn’t the worst singer this competition has ever seen, but you can’t say she was one of the better performers on Wednesday when she sang Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”

Then we were treated to a performance by Season 3 champ Fantasia. Damn, I forgot how that girl could wail. She put on a clinic for some of those other girls last night and even got a standing O from all three judges.

Back to reality…..five girls left, and Haley, Lakisha and Gina were all sent back to the pack. So it was between Nicole Tranquillo and Alaina Alexander. I was sure it would be Alaina but was wrong. Nicole and that Erykah Badu song in which you could barely make out the lyrics earned her a ticket back to Philly.

Finally, one more dude had to get a pink slip. All safe–Chris Sligh, Bald Phil, Jared, and AJ. Then it was between Sunjaya and Rudy. Ryan said that one of them had the lowest number of votes while the other was in the top 4. What??? Surely there were some forces of nature at work here that we weren’t aware of, or it’s those idiots who vote for the worst every week. Yeah, Sunjaya was safe….I mean, come on…that dude in the top 4? The other theory is he’s got that likeability factor that Kevin Covais had….just a good, humble kid. So Rudy got the heave-ho, and when he did that horrible Latin-inspired version of “Free Ride” to close out the show, I kind of felt like it was deserved.

We’re now down to 20. My favorites are Stephanie, Melinda, Sabrina, Jordin, Lakisha, Brandon, Chris S, Chris R, and Blake. And actually I’m going to say this right now….watch for Chris Sligh, he is my darkest of dark horses for winning the whole thing. Are you all on the phone to Vegas right now?

See you next week, when they will likely torture us with a group version of Squeeze’s “Pulling Mussels from a Shell.” I cringe in advance.

Adios!

The Office: “Cocktails”

Anytime “The Office” adds alcohol to the situation, there are always some fireworks. Roy…um…overreacted to the news that Pam and Jim kissed while she was still engaged, but the best part was how Roy’s brother, without even knowing what’s going on between Roy and Pam, picks up a stool and tosses it over the bar because he was pissed off about taking “a bath on some jet skis.” That is just so hilariously messed up.

One thing’s for sure – Roy has it out for Jim.

Meanwhile, things seem to be going pretty well between Jim and Karen. For a second there, it seemed like she might be the company tramp, but it turned out she was just screwing with him, which just makes her all the more attractive. The writers have done a nice job of making Karen a lot like Pam, only a little bit hotter.

I’ll admit, I was wrong with my prediction that Karen and Jim would split once Roy and Pam were back together. It seems like that relationship is done for good. So does the “new Pam” tell Jim how she really feels? It seems like we’re headed in that direction, and considering we’re already 18 episodes into the season, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that’s the season 3 cliffhanger.

Jan’s rant outside the cocktail party was pretty funny: “What’s the downside? I date Michael Scott publicly and collapse into myself like a dying star. Why is this so hard? That’s what she said. Oh my God, what am I saying?”

Jan is pretty messed up. I just don’t see things working out the way Michael hopes they will, with “the picket fence, ketchup fights, tickling and giggling.” Ketchup fights?

Dwight didn’t have many good lines tonight, but I did like his first comment when he was in the kid’s rocking chair: “Good, you’re up.”

Jericho, Episode 12: Back In The Day

It’s been over two months since we last had a new episode of “Jericho”…and, you know, I gotta tell ya, I think it’s a testament to how the series was losing me even before its temporary departure from the airwaves that not only did I not really miss it all that much while it was gone, but when it came back last night, I couldn’t even be bothered to be home or even set the VCR to tape it.

This isn’t to say that I didn’t want to see it, you understand – because if I didn’t, I certainly wouldn’t be continue to blog about it – but, clearly, my excitement about the show’s return was decidedly muted. It was, like, “Eh, I’ll watch it online tomorrow.”

Well, I’ve now watched it…and, okay, I’m back in I-want-to-see-what-happens-next-week mode, and it’s almost totally and utterly because we finally, finally, FINALLY got some questions answered about Hawkins. I was never entirely sure what to make of him before this (mostly because so little information was doled out about his past), but it seems that he was actually part of the group responsible for the nuclear attack. Oddly enough, I never really considered that to be a possibility; I always just figured he was working within the government in some capacity and that, as a result, he knew who was responsible. But to actually be a member of the group who set off the bombs, I absolutely didn’t anticipate that. I’m figuring he might’ve been working undercover, but we’ll see.

We also got back story on Jake and what he was doing prior to his return to Jericho…well, at least part of what he was doing, anyway; he was indeed in Iraq, as well as Afghanistan, but he was apparently working for a private contractor rather than the military. We also confirmed that he was returning to Jericho because he was on the run…from Ravenwood Security. (You may remember them as the organization who’d supposedly been hired by the US Dept. of Homeland Security as back-up for the National Guard.)

Basically, these were the two big stories going on in this episode, which was almost exclusively told in flashback during the 36 hours before the bombs fell. There are other bits and pieces about what the other citizens of Jericho were doing at the time, but aside from Jake and Hawkins, the only other interesting bit of info that we receive is that Emily had been fighting with her fiance, Roger, before he left town. The only new information we get comes during the last five minutes; it’s only two things, but it’s just enough to inspire interest in next week’s episode.

1) In addition to Roger’s return, one of the other people who comes strolling into town – although no-one knows it except us viewers – is Hawkins’ ex-partner (or lover, or whatever) from this terrorist organization he’d been working with.

2) Roger saw some seriously fucked up shit. Or else he’s now blind and didn’t see anything at all. I honestly couldn’t tell for sure which it was…but whatever the case, that was a seriously blank stare he was giving.

Back next week? Yep. The preview makes it look like it might be a bit darker. I know, I always get my hopes up, and I’m invariably disappointed. But this week’s episode has made me optimistic…so don’t let me down, “Jericho”!
