American Idol: Our Worst Nightmare Continues

Well America, you did it. You kept Sanjaya on “American Idol” long enough to have to endure him on tour this summer. I hope you’re happy, because last night you sent a really talented singer home.

But before we get to the results, let’s talk about Peter Noone and LuLu. Noone sang his Herman’s Hermits hit, “There’s a Kind of Hush,” and it was predictably like a lounge act, though dude looks pretty good for his age. Later on LuLu sang “To Sir With Love,” and I can’t ever recall seeing a 60-ish woman looking that hot. Not only that, she can still belt it out. I mean, she’s going to be more popular now than she’s ever been because of last night.

So on to the results, and after another Fox teaser where they shamelessly plugged one of their other shows, Brad Garrett of “Til Death” sat with the contestants and was the honorary first one voted off. That was kind of stupid.

Then in 3’s, Ryan Seacrest had the contestants stand up and let them know they were safe: Phil, Melinda and Blake (And Phil hooted like he was Taylor Hicks, because he knew he was in danger); then Chris Sligh, Lakisha and Blake; and finally Sanjaya, Haley and Gina (are you kidding me?). So then there was no suspense because the bottom 2 was Stephanie and Chris Richardson. Neither one should have been there, but I had a feeling Stephanie was toast and she was. But Chris Richardson? That dude had one of his best performances the other night and he almost went home.

So there you have it, America. I hope you’re happy that a few more talented singers got sent home before Sanjaya. But really, how much longer can Gina, Phil, Haley and Sanjaya hang on? There is clearly another level above them. I guess you could ask that crying chick, who is suddenly more famous than anyone left singing.

Well, here are my power rankings, and we’ll see you all next week:

1. Melinda
2. Jordin
3. Lakisha
4. Blake
5. Chris S.
6. Chris R.
7. Haley and her legs
8. Phil
9. Gina
10. Sanjaya
11. The Cast of “Bones” (you’re welcome, Fox)

BE’s Badass Bracket: Round 1 Recap

Apparently, we sold Indiana Jones short. He was, after all, being set up for a major thrashing at the hands of CTU super agent, Jack Bauer, but the good doctor held a respectable lead for a majority of the voting stage and pulled out a win. Of course, despite losing to Indy by nearly 25% at one point, Jack made a last minute campaign that landed him within 5% of victory. A close battle indeed, and that wasn’t the only upset of the first round, either. The Bride fell victim to James Bond’s charm and apparent popularity, while John McClane swept the floor with Tyler Durden perhaps too easily.

In a classic battle of old vs. new, Sonny Corleone whacked Tony Soprano, and Conan showed Casey Ryback just how much of a barbarian he really is. And what of Maxmius’ battle with James Dalton? Just as we expected, though the fight between Ash and Doc Holliday was an out-and-out brawl to the end, with the polls locked at the 50/50 mark until the final days when Doc pulled out a last minute victory with a surge in votes and a little luck. As a result, the Round of 16 will be heavily represented by the veteran badasses, with many of the new blood favorites sent packing far earlier than expected.

Check out all of our round one match-ups here, and then come back to post any gripes or opinions about the results.

Yes, she really does like Sanjaya that much

Yeah, I didn’t quite understand it, either.

Soooooo, if you happened to catch “American Idol” on Tuesday night, you no doubt were scratching your head in bewilderment over the above pictured’s constant sobbing reactions to all the performers…especially Sanjaya’s. Turns out the girl is 13-year-old Ashley Feryl who had won some online tickets to see a taping of “Smarter Than A 5th Grader,” and also included passes to a dress rehearsal for either that show or “American Idol.” She began crying there, and the producers loved it so much, they gave her a special seat with her mom for the official taping. Remind me next time that I want all my debts paid off to bring an annoying tearful teenager along with me.

Battlestar Galactica: “Crossroads, Part 1”

Finally, some real Cylon contact!

It turns out that the Cylons have been tracking the human fleet, but Number 6 supposedly gave Tigh the information he needed to throw the toasters off their scent.

But that info came at a price. Number 6 threw Tigh into a guilt-ridden tailspin, which climaxed at the trial when he said he’d do anything to put Dr. Baltar away except, of course, stay sober. Way to be a good witness, Tigh! Thanks a bunch!

What was the deal with the music? Didn’t Sam hear it in the bar as well? And what was the deal with the look that the President’s aide (Tori) and Sam shared at the bar? Are Sam and Seelix are becoming an item? My head is spinning.

I still don’t get why Lee would want to help Baltar. I understand that Starbuck’s death has made him want to step out from his father’s shadow, but why help Gaius? That scene in the Admiral’s quarters was classic:

Lee: Are you calling me a liar?
Will: I’m calling you a liar and a coward.
Lee: I will not serve for a man who questions my integrity.
Will: And I will not have an officer under my command who doesn’t have any.

Ouch.

It looks like Baltar’s trial and the season are going to wrap up next week. Is it just me or is this season lacking the normal buildup to the finale? All those self-contained domestic episodes in the middle of the season threw me for a loop.

So long, pinhead…and I mean that in the best possible way.

Calvert DeForest – also known as Larry “Bud” Melman – is dead.

Yes, I know, Letterman once showed a retrospective of DeForest’s work on his show, only to have it end with DeForest coming out on the stage and shouting, “I’m not dead, you pinhead!” Would that he’d do the same thing this time. There isn’t any official news report on this yet, but Mark Evanier has posted the news on his site, based on a report from Don “Donz” Giller on the David Letterman newsgroup…and, honestly, I don’t think Evanier would’ve posted it if he didn’t believe it to be 100% true. Too bad. DeForest has been retired since 2003, but his face is one that you know the second you see it.

Letterman came down with a case of stomach flu and didn’t host “The Late Show” last night, but count on him paying tribute to DeForest as soon as he returns.
