Dont worry, be happy

…or in Ari’s case, an emotionless prick. Seriously, though. What was with Ari this week? Apparently feeling the weight of Vince’s “break-up,” the dude just isn’t the same. First he saved his assistant Lloyd from certain rape (conceding a multi-million dollar signing), and then he couldn’t even fire an inept employee (apparently his favorite thing to do) because the guy mentioned something about his recent break-up with his girlfriend.

Mrs. Ari definitely knows the score, as she tells their marriage counselor that she thinks her husband is depressed (he hasn’t eaten a full meal in a week), but Ari just uses the moment as a chance to unleash yet another great Ari Gold rant. Of course, his wife is right, and when he suddenly breaks in the middle of his office (crying, even), Ari calls an emergency with his counselor to get some immediate help. She seems to think that his more recent experience with emotions (like guilt and compassion) are good for the usually emotionless agent, but Ari doesn’t like the new transformation – “I don’t want to evolve. I want me. I like me.” And like that, he’s back. Here’s hoping Ari either gets back with Vince real soon or learns how to cope with his emotional outbreaks, because it was pretty emasculating to see Ari in that situation.

Moving on, Vince and Eric are officially in hot water with Amanda. And before I continue, can I just say one thing? Carla Gugino is smoking hot! Okay, that’s better. Back to Amanda, it seems she’s a lot tougher than we originally thought, refusing to back down from Vince’s runaround about the Sam Mendes film. She wants a decision by the end of the day, and Vince and Eric agree as long as they can read the script one last time. Problem is, no one likes the script the second time around, and it seems Vince only agreed to the project because Amanda was so convincing in her sales pitch.

When Vince tells her this, she doesn’t believe him, but he urges that it’s hard to say no to someone so “cute.” Wait, did he just say the c-word? I didn’t think guys were allowed to say that. No, she’s HOT in my book (and Vince’s too). Heck, even Amanda finds the wording more than a little interesting, and when she calls Vince back later in the night for some clarification, she mentions that there’s definitely some sexual tension between the two. Amanda doesn’t like sexual tension (who does?) and so she makes Vince an offer he can’t refuse: have sex with your hot new agent. It would be silly to think that Vince would decline, and by the looks of next week’s episode, he doesn’t, but we all know what happens when Vince gets involved with a girl he likes, and that only means one thing: the return of Ari Gold.

“You gotta wonder what’s next.”

At one point during tonight’s episode, Tony told Beansie that things were going great, but he was waiting for the other shoe to drop. Excuse me? Things are going great? Not only are the feds up your ass more than ever, but your brother-in-law beat the snot out of you two weeks ago, you said last week that you thought your cousin wanted you dead, and this week you very nearly dropped one of your oldest, closest friends over the side of a boat. Again. If this is “going great,” I’d hate to see Tony after a bad day.

I’m sure some people will complain about this episode’s apparent lack of action, but think about what’s been accomplished now: Tony had the brawl with Bobby, the backlash from which we still haven’t seen; Tony’s convinced that Chris despises him and Chris thinks Tony’s pissed about his movie; and now Tony apparently thinks Paulie is so much of a liability that he’s giving serious consideration to whacking him. Three episodes in, and Tony’s at odds with three of his guys. If I’m Sil, I’m watching my back.

It was pretty cool to hear some of the stories Tony, Paulie and Beansie were sharing this week, and that picture of young Paulie was awesome. I wasn’t entirely sure what Tony was trying to accomplish on the boat, but it seemed like he kept harping on the joke Ralph told about Johnny Sack’s wife because he was looking for a reason to off Paulie. When Paulie flat-out denied that he told Johnny about the joke, T thought about going through with it anyway before deciding to chuck a bottle of beer at him instead. Still, judging by what Tony told Beansie and by how annoyed Tony seems to be with Paulie these days, it certainly seems like Paulie’s living on borrowed time.

Fortunately, the potential problem with the Willie Overalls killing from 1982 (apparently Tony’s first) blew over, but after Sil told T the good news, he said, “You gotta wonder what’s next.” Maybe it’s not the most optimistic outlook, but it definitely seems to be a realistic one. The feds may not be able to pin Willie Overalls on Tony, but that won’t stop them from digging up something else on him.

Speaking of which, did anybody else think the girl Tony hooked up with was asking too many questions? Seems if you’re “laying low,” as Tony told Paulie earlier in the episode, you use your aliases even around the ladies. The blonde Tony slept with seemed awful interested in the people at the table the night before, and she said something that made it sound like she’d been talking with Paulie too. Something to keep an eye on, maybe.

How great was it to see Junior back in action? Sure, it’s not quite the same now that he’s hopped up on meds in that criminal loony bin, but he’s clearly still a little ‘oobatz.’ That Asian kid that was hanging around Junior was trouble from the get go, and I figured he was going to attack Junior at some point, but I wondered if he would actually kill him. Turns out he just beat Junior up pretty good. How exactly Junior’s arc this week relates to the overall storyline is a bit unclear, though I’m thinking it was a way to show just how far someone of Tony’s stature (and Junior’s before Tony) could eventually fall.

Finally, I guess we should discuss the drama in New York, where the guy who whacked the guy everyone thought was going to take over for Johnny Sack got whacked himself (got all that?). This time, Phil was behind the hit, and for a good reason: you just don’t take food off another guy’s plate. I’ve always known that, but now I know just how dire the consequences can be if you break that rule. Keep your fork to yourself. Lesson learned.

Jericho, Episode 19: Whoops, Apocalypse!

Sorry for the delay in getting this posted…although, honestly, the feedback is so often limited to just one person’s thoughts that I’m thinking maybe John and I should just trade E-mail back and forth about the show. (Loosely translated: even if the show makes it back for Season 2, don’t necessarily hold your breath on the blog returning with it.) Anyway, the reasons for the delay are really just several small, ultimately-unimportant excuses, so I’ll just offer my apologies and say, “Let’s get on with it, then, shall we?”

Well, actually, delay or no delay, this’ll be a short one.

The big action this week involved the boys from Jericho returning from New Bern with windmills…but without Eric. Jake, of course, goes in search of his brother, and he drafts Hawkins to go with him. This gives Hawkins a chance to finally let loose and use the skills he hasn’t had much call for since the bombs dropped; it shocks Jake a bit when Hawkins takes on the deputy, but, dude, you knew his past, you shouldn’t have been that surprised. Johnston and Mary bond a little, Stanley and Mimi fight a little, Skylar tries to declare her parents dead so that she can have control of their farm (and, amazingly, Mr. Mayor manages to make a valid point or two when arguing with her), and, basically, we get the idea that between New Bern and Ravenwood, Jericho’s probably gonna be using that tank they’ve got stashed away sooner than later.

The big bombshell of the week, though, is that Heather is dead. I didn’t really anticipate that.

Will we see these comedies come the fall…?

The folks at TheFutonCritic.com somehow manage to know more about what’s going on the world of television than – by our reckoning – any other online source out there. So when we were curious to get an idea about what we might be seeing when the 2007 – 2008 TV season arrives, we knew there was no better place to visit. After scouring their database, we found that these looked like the shows to put your money on seeing come September…provided, of course, that the pilots don’t need to be retooled. (I hate it when that happens.) Otherwise, it’s sayonara ’til mid-season…or, God forbid, forever.

Action News

The Big Names in the Cast: Kelsey Grammer, Patricia Heaton, Fred Willard

The Pitch: In the 90s, the local TV news scene in Pittsburgh was dominated by one team: CHUCK DARLING (Grammer) and KELLY CARR (Heaton). They had that elusive quality all news teams need: chemistry … at least on-screen. Off-screen, Chuck was a bit of an egomaniacal womanizer, Kelly a bit of an uptight know-it-all. So when Chuck got the call to move up to a larger market, no tears were shed. Now, after an embarrassing newscast tirade ends up on the Internet, Chuck finds himself on the downswing career-wise. He’s even questioning whether his lifestyle of chasing women and living in hotels is as exciting as it used to be. So when he gets the call to return to Pittsburgh, to reunite with Kelly and try to take the newscast back to No. 1, it’s an offer he can’t refuse.

As If That Wasn’t Enough: it’s co-created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, the team behind “Frasier,” so they know how to play to Grammer’s comedic strengths.

Area 57

The Big Names in the Cast: Paul Reubens, Matthew Lillard, Bruce McGill.

The Pitch: Taking on the challenge of a classified mission in a top-secret location is hard enough. Throw in a dysfunctional crew that despises you and an alien that makes fun of you and you’ve got one bizarre challenge on your hands. So what if Colonel Steven Isaac’s (Lillard) new career move turns out to be more punishment than promotion? He’s ready for it. Foul extraterrestrial bodily emissions? No problem. Random objects falling from the sky? He’s got it covered. Dirty looks and dirtier rumors? No worries. The laughs are all in a day’s work in this unique comedy.

As If That Wasn’t Enough: the executive producer, David Latt, also produced the pilot for “Twin Peaks,” so he clearly knows how to handle quirky material.

I’m In Hell

The Big Names in the Cast: David Cross, Jason Biggs, Erika Christensen

The Pitch: This comedy centers on a high-flying wall street guy (Biggs) who dies in a blackberry-related car crash only to be sent back stripped of his career, his fancy apartment and the fabulous trappings of his former existence.

As If That Wasn’t Enough: David Cross plays the Devil! What more do you need to know?

Bullz-Eye’s Badass Bracket: Final Match

It started with 32 competitors. Now it’s down to the final two.

It’d be nice to write something original for once, but the fact remains – Indiana Jones has surprised us yet again. After upsetting #1 seed Jack Bauer in the first round and then steamrolling over the likes of Doc Holliday, John McClane and Maximus, the archaeologist-turned-adventurer will now face off against his most formidable opponent yet: Batman.

Sure the Dark Knight has been just as much of a wild card in this competition as his challenger, bouncing the bracket’s other #1 seed Dirty Harry in the Sweet 16 while also knocking off staff favorite Tony Montana, but he hasn’t advanced to the final match quite as easily as Indy. It’ll be interesting to see how the two iconic heroes match up, specifically because they’re so similar in so many ways. And before you declare shenanigans on this whole bracket, remember one thing: none of us ever thought either one of these guys would get this far.
