Get ready, cause here it comes…

I never met a weekend that makes me feel the way that you do (you’re NOT alright)
Whenever I’m asked what films that make me feel worse, I say that these do (you’ll cry all night)

The notorious February 10th weekend is officially here, coming with it four new films, including the animated adaptation of the classic children’s book series “Curious George” and the third installment of the horror franshise “Final Destination 3.” Also out this week is the Steve Martin sure-to-flop-so-hard-it-leaves-theaters-in-under-a-fortnight “The Pink Panther” and the paint-by-numbers Harrison Ford thriller “Firewall.” Both of these films could have been released anytime during the beginning of the year, or even sometime in August, and no one would have even noticed. “FD3,” however, is currently receiving a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and has the backing of all my film critic colleagues.

A prologue to one of the worst weekends in movie history

With the notorious February 10th film weekend only a week away, we could only hope that there’s an excellent film just waiting to take our minds off this subject. Unfortunately, this weekend at the movies won’t be much different from the next, or the next, or the next, for that matter. This weekend brings only two new films in wide release, the urban comedy “Something New,” and a remake of the thriller “When A Stranger Calls.” Not exactly box office magic material.

Also out this week, but in limited release, is the teen horror flick “Tamara,” as well as two indie hits starring verteran actors: Tommy Lee Jones in “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” and Anthony Hopkins in “The World’s Fastest Indian.”

Marketing 101: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

There are three new films being released this weekend, and because the movies aren’t really worth chatting about, I decided to instead look at the respective marketing campaigns for each one:

Annapolis
PRO: Geared towards men looking for a film they can take a girlfriend to
CON: In no way describes that the film is a boxing movie

Big Momma’s House 2
PRO: Grand marketing campaign with television ads every two minutes
CON: Grand marketing campaign with television ads every two minutes

Bubble
PRO: Brilliant scheme to release on the same day in all formats
CON: Nobody other than media press know a thing about it

DVD shuffle: 01/24/05

Out on DVD this week:

1) Flightplan – RENT: For how well this film did at the box office, I have to say that I was expecting a whole lot more. Still, it’s theatrical success is hardly worth contesting, so I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

2) The Fog – PASS: Never got a chance to see this remake of the classic 70’s horror film, and quite frankly, I never will. The casting of YA Superman doesn’t help the case either, but fans of Maggie Grace jonesing for some wet T-shirt action may very well be compelled to pick this one up.

3) The Aristocrats – RENT: A documentary about the dirtiest joke ever told, “The Aristocrats” is more of a secret handshake between comics than a film for the Average Joe. Still, despite it’s utter lack of comedy, it would be difficult to suggest never seeing this movie. It’s certainly worth seeing once, but that’s it.

Also out this week is a reissue of the sci-fi cult film “Repo Man,” as well as the gen-Y drama “Thumbsucker.”

Kate Beckinsale looking forward to suck the blood out of transexual, Muslims

The black void that is the January film season only gets worse this week with the release of the vampire/werewolf flick “Underworld: Evolution,” the sequel to the stlyish genre film from a few years ago. Too bad director Len Wiseman didn’t just take the money and run, because “Evolution” is a disgrace to the original. Also in theaters this week is the Golden Globe-winning drama “Transamerica” and the Albert Brooks comedy “Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World.” It doesn’t look like the Brothers Weinstein are suffering any from their parting with Disney. The awards just keep rolling in for those guys, don’t they?
