Howard Stern debut

I caught 20 minutes of Howard’s first broadcast on Sirius and it was friggin’ hilarious (click here for a complete overview of the first show). George Takei (of Star Trek fame) was on board as the show’s new announcer, so Howard and the gang had lots of fun with the whole gay theme.

I almost drove my car off the road when they started playing the Pat O’Brien tape. Of course it was uncensored, which took the bit to a whole new level. Then they started playing song parodies (like Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy”) with O’Brien’s ridiculous statements in the background. Priceless.

One blog counted 77 f-bombs from Howard. Howard claims he doesn’t want to rely too heavily on profanity, pointing out that it gets boring if used too often. My first impression is that he’s striking a good balance, and the O’Brien tape is a great example of content that works much better in an uncensored setting.

I’m glad he’s back.

Who? He’s playing who?

Looks like the WB has tapped a relative unknown to play Aquaman in the upcoming TV series. So sure, you can say, “Who is Will Toale?” My question, though, is “Who gives a shit about Aquaman?” Seriously. It’s easy to see why “Smallville” works since it’s easy to find Superman fans who are interested in that character and who’s had shows a-plenty based on it (I still can’t fathom the popularity of “Lois and Clark”). But when did anyone ever really get behind Aquaman? To me, he was an even bigger nimrod of the Justice league than either The Wonder Twins or that goofball Marvin. One of those characters like the Green Arrow that just always seemed like a third-stringer rather than a real hero. I predict a short life for this series. However, it’ll probably get at least two seasons under its belt since the WB isn’t as overzealous as Fox is to get rid of its shows as fast as possible. However, I hope in this show that Aquaman gets to do menial tasks during his off-hours like check the fluoride levels in the water supply, and paint over grafitti on water towers. I’d actually watch that. Once.

Box Office Roundup: Evil triumphs over good

Based on Sunday’s estimates:

1) Hostel: $20.1 million (first weekend)
After the tremendous success of the “Saw” movies and now “Hostel,” one thing is abundantly clear about the American moviegoing public: we hate ourselves and want to die, preferably at the hands of a guy with pliers and a chainsaw.
2) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: $15.4 million ($247.5 million, fifth weekend)
As a token of their appreciation, Disney has set aside a special slush fund to keep Adam Samberg and Chris Parnell up to their eyeballs in hookers and coke for the next five years.
3) King Kong: $12.4 million ($192.5 million, fourth weekend)
This is going to sail past $200 million, and people are still going to think of it as a failure. Does that seem at all right?
4) Fun with Dick and Jane: $12.2 million ($81.3 million, third weekend)
It’s time to call a moratorium on all of the “$100 million bomb” jokes, as Jim and Tea seem to be doing just fine, thank you. Still, did they really need to spend $100 million on this?
5) Cheaper by the Dozen 2: $8.3 million ($66.4 million, second weekend)
Trust us, when “The Pink Panther” comes out, you’ll try to remember when Martin had better taste in scripts. You know, when he did movies like this.

He’s back in the limelight. You mean he isn’t dead?

When I was a kid way back in them there ’70s and ’80s, I already thought Gene Shalit was a strange old dude. He must’ve only been in his friggin’ teens as the guy’s still around. It’s Abe Vigoda Syndrome, baby. Anyway, GLAAD is pissed off at Shalit’s recent review of Brokeback Mountain. I guess Gene had decided that it was time to prove he still existed, since only us old schoolers remember him. I mean, Roger Ebert gets older and thinner, and Shalit remains the same scary hairball with each passing year. Thank God we never had to see Gene in a “Battle of the Network Stars” way back when. Can you imagine having to inadvertently discover where the rest of that hair decided to go on his body while watching him in a tug o’ war match? Creepy.
