“Lost” tops online streamed TV programs

“Lost” and “SNL” are also popular online.

Lost, Saturday Night Live and Grey’s Anatomy were December’s three most popular entertainment TV programs streamed from tagged network websites and embedded network video players, according to VideoCensus data from Nielsen Online (via MarketingCharts).

In its first public release of ratings for online individual TV programs, Nielsen reported that ABC.com’s Lost had 1.4 million unique viewers in December — the most among streamed online broadcast TV network entertainment programs. NBC.com’s Saturday Night Live was a close second, with 1.1 million unique viewers, followed by ABC.com’s Grey’s Anatomy with 879,000 unique viewers in December.

The network websites included were from broadcast networks that had tagged their online offerings: ABC.com, CBS Television, CWTV.com, FOX Broadcasting, and NBC.com. The rankings exclude Hulu, which currently does not report VideoCensus data at the program level.Rankings include unique viewers who viewed a full episode, part of an episode or a program clip during the month.

“As I see it, the broad diversity of top television network entertainment programs online suggests that there is more to online viewership than a simple extension of the TV audience,” said Jon Gibs, VP of media analytics, Nielsen Online. “While the online popularity of some shows, like Grey’s Anatomy suggests that some people are using the internet to catch up on programs they usually watch on TV, the online popularity of other programs like Saturday Night Live, indicates that there is a web audience that might otherwise not watch these programs at all. These viewers are driven by a morning-after water-cooler effect.”

Nielson’s reports are incomplete until they start including numbers from Hulu as well, and we also need information about how these numbers stack up against popular online video sites.

It would have been interesting to see numbers from Novemeber and October, as “SNL” surely led the way with its political coverage.

Peter Gabriel bows out of the Oscars

Nikke Finke is reporting over at her Deadline Hollywood Daily blog that Peter Gabriel has pulled out of performing “Down to Earth,” his contribution to the “Wall-E” soundtrack, at the Academy Awards because he doesn’t think the nominated songs, their writers, and their performers are getting enough respect during this year’s Oscars telecast.

Why? Because the producers of the show, Larry Mark and Bill Condon, have opted to present the three nominated songs within a medley.

Says Ms. Frinke:

I’m told the producers have slotted 90 seconds in the medley for each song sung by its original performer. But Gabriel said in his letter that he was only being offered 65 seconds for his song. “I don’t feel that is sufficient time to do the song justice, and I have decided to withdraw from performing,” Gabriel informed AMPAS. “I fully respect and look forward to the producers’ right to revamp the show. Even though song writers are small players in the filmmmaking process, they are just as committed and work just as hard as the rest of the team, and I regret that this new version of the ceremony is being created in part at their expense.”

What do ya’ll think? Personally, I don’t blame the guy. They had a chance to have Peter freaking Gabriel sing his Oscar-nominated song, and instead they said, “Can you cut it down a minute five?” If it’d been me, I don’t know that I’d have been nearly as polite with my response.

Coming to HBO on Sunday: “Eastbound and Down”

When HBO’s new sitcom, “Eastbound and Down,” premieres on Sunday night at 10:30 PM, you’ll see a fair amount of Will Ferrell, who – along with Adam McKay – serves as one of the series’ executive producers…but don’t get too used to it. Although Ferrell gets a lot of hilarious screen time playing car dealer Ashley Shaffer, who’s clearly modeled his coif after legendary wrestler Rick Flair, the word on the street is that we won’t be seeing much…if any…more of Ferrell in future episodes. And, frankly, that’s only fair to the show’s real star, Danny McBride, who’s never going to make any headway if people only keep watching because they’re saying, “Yeah, yeah, now where’s Will?” Still, Ferrell is a good reason to start watching the show, as you can see from these two commercials for Ashley Shaffer Imports.

Head on over to Bullz-Eye to see a “Making Of” featurette and interviews with Ferrell and McBride.

Heigl & Knight to leave “Grey’s Anatomy”?

The answer is yes, according to a co-star.

When Us Weekly asked James Pickens Jr. (a.k.a. Grey’s Dr. Richard Webber) on February 7 if [Katherine] Heigl is leaving the medical drama, he said, “Yes, she is.” And he continued, “Wherever Katherine goes, I wish her nothing but the best.”

Her outspoken BFF, [T.R.] Knight, 35. “He’s going too,” Pickens told Us at the NAACP Awards luncheon in Beverly Hills. “He just wanted to pursue other career paths.”

“He complains to Katherine all the time,” a set source has said of Knight (with Heigl). “The energy on set will be much better when he’s gone.”

I stopped watching the show a few seasons ago when everyone started sleeping with each other. But this is (probably) huge news to fans still devoted to the show. I have always like Heigl (ever since the days of “Roswell”) so it will be interesting to see where she lands next.

2/18 Update: According to Shonda Rhimes, the two actors aren’t leaving the show.

Gee, your Trekkie smells terrific!

Those pop culture geeks among us who don’t mind dropping a little bit of coin to score unique trinkets inspired by our favorite shows may already be familiar with GenkiWear, a company which has earned a name for itself by producing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” jewelry, including reproductions of Anyanka’s Power Center Amulet and Necklace and The Slayer’s Cross and Necklace.

Now, however, they’ve set their sights…and their scents…on “Star Trek” fans by developing a trio of fragrances celebrating the classic TV series. Get your olfactory organs ready for “Tiberius” (destined to be referred to as “Smells Like Shatner”), “Pon Farr” (great news for those of us who are looking to score with a Vulcan but can live with only getting laid once every seven years), and “Red Shirt,” which we can only presume allows its wearer to bear the stench of death…but for God’s sake, don’t wear “Tiberius” and “Pon Farr” together unless this floats your boat. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) All three of these colognes are scheduled to be available in stores in the spring…a date which is no way coincidental to the release of the new “Star Trek” movie.

Want a piece of this? Wear “Pon Farr,” from GenkiWear.

(WARNING: The wearing of “Pon Farr” does not, in fact, guarantee that you will get said piece.)
