Box Office Roundup: Animated, pizza-eating turtles box office hit despite absence of Vanilla Ice

Based on Sunday’s estimates, courtesy of boxofficemojo.com:

1) TMNT: $25.5 million (owner: Kevin Carr, But I Liked ‘Lady in the Water’)
In one weekend, Kevin’s second pick outgrossed his first pick (“Daddy’s Little Girls”). He’s still not getting out of the bottom half of the standings, though.
2) 300: $20.5 million, $162.4 million to date (Mark Pfeiffer, Reel Times)
Someone cut this movie to the tune of “It’s Raining Men.” Yep, that makes sense.
3) Shooter: $14.5 million (David Medsker, Republicans for Voldemort)
Once again, we nominate Pablo Francisco to do all voice work for Danny Glover from now on.
4) Wild Hogs: $14.3 million, $123.8 million to date (owner: Kristin Dreyer Kramer, Nights and Weekends)
This certainly takes the sting out of the performance of “Hannibal Rising,” plus she has “Meet the Robinsons” dropping next week. Look out, Mark.
5) The Last Mimzy: $10.2 million (Mark Pfeiffer, Reel Times)
As last-round picks go, this is a steal. As snappy one-liners go, we’re completely stumped.
6) Premonition: $10.1 million, $32.1 million to date (Mark Pfeiffer, Reel Times)
Don’t laugh; this movie has nearly doubled its budget in two weeks.
7) The Hills Have Eyes 2: $10 million (Jason Zingale, Se7en Strangers)
America, it appears, is not nearly as excited about mutant rape as Hollywood would like you to believe.
8) Reign Over Me: $8 million, $58.2 million to date (Mark Pfeiffer, Reel Times)
Hot girl walks into a dentist’s office, says she wants to blow him. Is this a 9/11 drama, or a porno?
9) Pride: $4 million (Bill Clark, 300 Should Have Tanked)
Bill has been going on and on all season about how “Pride” was going to make huge bank. We all just smiled politely.
10) Dead Silence: $3.4 million, $13.2 million to date (Mark Pfeiffer, Reel Times)
You mean “From the writer and director of ‘Saw’” isn’t enough to sell a movie? What kind of world do we live in? A better one than we lived in two years ago, if you ask us.

Standings so far:
1) Reel Times: $237.5 million
2) What’s All This, Then: $176.5 million
3) Nights and Weekends: $151.5 million
4) Republicans for Voldemort: $97.8 million
5) But I Liked ‘Lady in the Water’: $84.2 million
6) ‘300’ Should Have Tanked: $77.7 million
7) Punch and Pie Pictures: $66.6 million
8) Se7en Strangers Productions: $54.4 million

This week: Two first-round picks square off as “Meet the Robinsons” takes on “Blades of Glory.” The crime thriller “The Lookout” hopes to get some of the crumbs. Also, we get to see “Grindhouse” on Tuesday, awwww yeah.

Bullz-Eye’s Badass Bracket: Round 2

Who is the biggest badass in entertainment history? We split the 32 contestants into two brackets and seeded each bracket 1-16. Now, it’s on you. Each week, we’ll open up different portions of the bracket for voting, with the winner of each matchup moving on to the next round until we’ve crowned a badass champion.

The lone female entry in Round One fared poorly, but the two women in Round Two have a lust for revenge. Ellen Ripley, scourge of all things alien, does battle with the Sexy Beast (Don Logan), while everyone’s favorite vampire slayer Buffy Summers is up against…a man in a bat suit. How fitting.

In our “I Love the ’70s” matchup, John Shaft goes mano a mano with Lee (“Enter the Dragon”), and the Old West is represented by badasses both good (Rooster Cogburn) and evil (Al Swearengen). The ultimate battle of good versus evil, however, features Tony “Scarface” Montana taking on the man who gave baby Jesus the gift of beard: Cordell Walker, Texas Ranger. There is also dueling mobsters, dueling gun nuts, and dueling psychos. Get your freak on.

Check out our full bracket to follow along, or just click on any one of the match-ups below and vote for your favorite badass:

(#1) Dirty Harry vs. (#16) Travis Bickle
(#2) Ellen Ripley vs. (#15) Don Logan
(#3) John Rambo vs. (#14) Tommy DeVito
(#4) Cord Walker vs. (#13) Tony Montana
(#5) Jules Winnfield vs. (#12) Keyser Soze
(#6) Rooster Cogburn vs. (#11) Al Swearengen
(#7) Lee vs. (#10) John Shaft
(#8) Batman vs. (#9) Buffy Summers

Rapid Fire Rejects: Volume XIV

Incubus
It’s never a good thing when Tara Reid can be viewed as the biggest star (nay, the best actor) in a film, but that’s exactly the case with the direct-to-DVD horror flick, “Incubus. Containing the same tired formula as most movies in its genre and the production values of a high school film project, “Incubus” may just be the most forgettable horror film in a long time. Forget about the fact that Reid is the star of this thing, because that should be the least of your worries when approaching this ghastly feature. The acting is beyond horrible and the story is so lazy (about some deranged killer who can literally dream his way into his victim’s minds, a la Freddy Kreuger) that you wouldn’t even know what was going on unless you read the summary on the back of the DVD case.

The Quiet
This just might be one of the funniest movies of 2006. Problem is, it’s not a comedy. An erotic thriller about a cheerleader (Elisha Cuthbert) who confides in a deaf-mute girl (Camilla Belle) living under the same roof, “The Quiet” features some of the most ridiculous characters and scenarios I’ve ever seen. For starters, Belle’s character isn’t exactly deaf or mute, Cuthbert’s cheerleader is sleeping with her father (Martin Donovan), her best friend is a bi-curious slut, and her mother (Edie Falco) is a prescription drug addict. Oh yeah, and the star basketball player (Shawn Ashmore) is a self-proclaimed sex addict with a learning disability. It’s called high school, you idiot. Just because you think you might have ADD and masturbate four times a night doesn’t make you special. In the end – well, I never quite made it to the end – but I can only imagine that it concludes with more than one soap operatic sequence where a character either dies or unravels some kind of secret that no one cares about.

Candy
If there’s one movie about drugs that will forever stick in my mind, it’s Darren Aronofsky’s “Requiem for a Dream.” In fact, I can’t see how anyone could watch that film and continue to use heroin afterwards. It’s that powerful, and because so, any other film about drug addition seems to pale in comparison. “Candy” is such a film, and while the Australian drama features great performances by its two stars (Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish), it doesn’t offer any new insight into the lifestyle.

BE’s Badass Bracket: Round 1 Recap

Apparently, we sold Indiana Jones short. He was, after all, being set up for a major thrashing at the hands of CTU super agent, Jack Bauer, but the good doctor held a respectable lead for a majority of the voting stage and pulled out a win. Of course, despite losing to Indy by nearly 25% at one point, Jack made a last minute campaign that landed him within 5% of victory. A close battle indeed, and that wasn’t the only upset of the first round, either. The Bride fell victim to James Bond’s charm and apparent popularity, while John McClane swept the floor with Tyler Durden perhaps too easily.

In a classic battle of old vs. new, Sonny Corleone whacked Tony Soprano, and Conan showed Casey Ryback just how much of a barbarian he really is. And what of Maxmius’ battle with James Dalton? Just as we expected, though the fight between Ash and Doc Holliday was an out-and-out brawl to the end, with the polls locked at the 50/50 mark until the final days when Doc pulled out a last minute victory with a surge in votes and a little luck. As a result, the Round of 16 will be heavily represented by the veteran badasses, with many of the new blood favorites sent packing far earlier than expected.

Check out all of our round one match-ups here, and then come back to post any gripes or opinions about the results.

Bullz-Eye slips camera guy a twenty, gets three questions with “Children of Men” director Alfonso Cuarón

“Children of Men” is the best movie of 2006 that you never saw, and the fact that it wasn’t even nominated for Best Picture, frankly, is appalling. (We’ll bet dollars to donuts that the people behind “The Departed” did a happy dance when they saw that “Children” had been snubbed.) We at Bullz-Eye are proud proponents of the film, and to promote the movie’s release on DVD, we were offered the opportunity to submit questions to “Children of Men” director Alfonso Curaón about the movie’s massive tracking shots (all of which are contained in the videos below), what aspects of the movie’s subject matter appealed to him, and whether or not we’ll see him behind the camera for one of the final “Harry Potter” movies (Curaón directed “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”) .

Also, for the truly inspired, there will be a forum at Amazon.com that discusses the political and social aspects of the film, beginning Monday, March 26 at 9PM EST/6PM PST. You say you want a revolution? Well, you know…
