DVD shuffle: 11/22/05

Out on DVD this week:

1) War of the Worlds – PASS: Fans of Spielberg’s work will eat up the two-disc special edition of the film with hours of bonus material, but anyone else semi-interested should just take it for a test drive.

2) Alien Vs. Predator: Special Edition – PASS: This has generated about as little bit of buzz as humanly possible, namely because Fox released a not-so-special-edition of the movie less than six months ago.

3) Senifeld: Seasons 5 & 6 – BUY: How can you not buy these two seasons? This is exactly when the series realized its full potential and became a ratings giant for NBC. Also, with every DVD box set offering a collection of hilarious extras, it’s hard not to indulge.

Other notable titles releasing today include “The Polar Express” and “Aeon Flux: The Complete Animated Collection,” but if I were you, I’d hold out one more week when a number of great films debut on disc.

Welcome back, Supes

I have to begin by saying that out of all of the major comic book heroes (i.e. Spider-Man, Batman, etc.), Superman is by far my least favorite. I grew up watching the old Superman films and hated just about every one. Now, director Bryan Singer – perhaps best known as the man who brought the X-Men to the big screen – is reinventing the “Superman” franchise. The first teaser trailer for the film was finally released today (and will undoubtedly show up attached to “Harry Potter” this weekend), and despite the lack of any major footage, I have to say I’m truly excited about this one. Don’t expect anything more than about six or seven short snippets from the film, but that final shot of Superman hovering out in space is money.

Check out the trailer here and then drop back to tell us what you think!

Weekend wizards will put a spell on box office slump

The Harry Potter movies are one of the most successful franchises in the history of film, so it’s no surprise that the fourth installment of the series (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire“) is the main attraction this weekend in theaters. And out of all of the chapters thus far, I must say that this is the best looking Potter of the bunch, and one that I’m actually excited to see. Meanwhile, the other major release of the week is the Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line,” and while it may not bring in as much business as the adolescent wizard, it will certainly make a good lump of cash. The film probably won’t win Best Picture or Best Director honors at next year’s Academy Awards, but if it doesn’t sweep the Best Actor/Actress category, I’d be stunned. Joaquin Phoenix is shoe-in for the award (I don’t even need to see anything else to determine this) and Reese Witherspoon has a pretty good shot considering everything else that’s been released. If nothing else, this a movie you should see strictly for these two performances.

“Saw 2” and “Chicken Little” are still tearing up the box office, and if you haven’t seen them yet, then maybe you should.

This is all very interesting, but who really cares?

November is the month of sweeps, the all important time of year when networks go ape-shit over how well their respective shows do in the ratings war, so why is it that “Lost” continues to air worthless episode after worthless episode? You know ABC, the show used to be considered a hit about a year ago, but at the rate you’re going, you might just be able to kill your two most promising shows (see also: “Deseperate Housewives”) at the same time.

After killing off Bitchie McHottie (AKA Shannon) at the end of last week’s episode, the series’ creators decided to reveal what happened to the tail-end survivors while Jack was off saving lives on the other side of the island. But in place of the usual episode rundown, I’ll stop myself short by saying, “Who the hell really cares?” Don’t we have enough major characters already? I think the last time I saw Kate as a prominent character was the second episode of the season. Isn’t she, like, one of the top three characters in the major plot line? Why are they even bothering introducing new characters at a time when they’re willing to kill off past cast members?

Don’t get me wrong. Mr. Eko is the coolest dude on the island. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it every week until he lets me down, but the show’s writers are going to have a lot of work ahead of them in order to make Ana-Lucia a worthy favorite. I know, I know, Sawyer was a bad dude at the beginning of the first season, and now he’s one of the favorite survivors, but does ABC really think this formula will work the second time around?

By the way, is it just me, or does the preview for next week’s show look a lot like the merger episode for “Survivor”?

This is what assholes are made of

In an act of complete insanity, director/actor Vincent Gallo has put up his sperm for sale on the official website for Gallo merchandise – VGmerchandise.com – to the tune of $1 million. The option of natural insemination is also available for an additional $500,000, but if he finds the woman attractive, he will gladly waive the fee. Oh, how nice of him. The following description is a selection from the sales pitch on the website:

“Mr. Gallo is 5’11” and has blue eyes. There are no known genetic deformities in his ancestry (no cripples) and no history of congenital diseases. If you have seen The Brown Bunny, you know the potential size of the genitals if it’s a boy. (8 inches if he’s like his father.) I don’t know exactly how a well hung father can enhance the physical makeup of a female baby, but it can’t hurt. Mr. Gallo also presently maintains a distinctively full head of hair and at the age of 43 has surprisingly few gray hairs. Though his features are sharp and extreme, they would probably blend well with a softer, more subtly featured female. Mr. Gallo maintains the right to refuse sale of his sperm to those of extremely dark complexions.”

Wow. It later goes on to state that “the purchase of Mr. Gallo’s sperm does not include the use of the name Gallo. The purchaser must find another surname for the child. ” This guy might just steal the Whacko of the Year award away from Tom Cruise, but it’s going to be a close race.
