As far as successful films go, 2016 has had one hell of a ride. From family-friendly movies such as Finding Dory clearing an eye watering $1 billion dollars all whilst still showing in cinemas, to R-Rated violence fests like Deadpool shocking the studios and breaking almost $800 million! This has definitely been the year for big money films. Check out some prime examples of the numbers this year has provided for the silver screen.
Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice
What started as simply a sequel to Man of Steel quickly evolved to become a co-headliner for two of the greatest superheroes of all-time. Batman vs Superman grossed an incredible $873 million dollars on its $250 million dollar budget. Picking up directly from Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice is based around the human race’s struggle to truly accept Superman as their true hero. Many film critics actually wrote negative reviews despite the film’s incredible numbers. It starred Henry Cavill as Superman once again, with Ben Affleck giving his first foray in his role as Batman.
Captain America: Civil War
The 13th entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and number one on the list of highest grossing films of 2016, Captain America: Civil War made an incredible $1.1 Billion dollars. Civil War was both a complete critical and financial success, earning the title of 12th highest earning movie of all time. With the much loved stars of the MCU such as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannsson reprising their roles, this year’s release swiftly earned its place as the summer hit from the start. Following the story of the gradual tension growing within the Avengers and the inevitable fallout of their massive egos, the film also introduces Black Panther, the new Spiderman and brings Ant-Man into his first appearance alongside the rest of the Avengers.
Deadpool
The film the world had been waiting for Deadpool to be brought to life on the silver screen for a long while. Seven years after being both teased and sadly disappointed by Wade Wilson’s brief and rather poor appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds helped make the movie fans had been desperately waiting for. Grossing an incredible $782.6 million dollars on a mere $58 million budget, Deadpool returned a mind-blowing thirteen times its budget, securing itself not only a sequel, but a well-deserved place in the hearts of fans!
Ghostbusters
When news dropped of the controversial reboot of the 1984 sci-fi classic, fans were divided into two very passionate camps. The 2016 film starred Melissa Mcarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as the eponymous team of ghost busting heroes, receiving mixed reviews from critics. Staying faithful enough to the original story, the team get together to save New York City from a wealth of ghosts. The film also starred Chris Hemsworth as the comic relief, and also featured cameos from original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.
X-Men Apocalypse
The 9th film in the X-Men franchise grossed over $534 million and stars Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy reprising their roles once more as the infamous Magneto and Charles Xavier respectively. The film follows super villain Apocalypse’s resurrection and his recruitment of his four horseman, featuring fan favourites such as Angel, Psylocke, and revealing the origin story of a young Storm.
