Box Office Roundup: God puts his foot down

Based on Monday’s estimates:

1) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe : $32.8 million ($224.8 million, fourth weekend)
Curious that the lion wasn’t named Scott since, if the people who are pounding our other posts are any indication, Scott Stapp is apparently God.
2) King Kong: $31.5 million ($174.3 million, third weekend)
Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone, but Naomi Watts was freaking awesome in this.
3) Fun with Dick and Jane: $21 million ($64.5 million, second weekend)
Well, there’s two thirds of the budget back. The last third is the hardest, though. Just ask “The Legend of Zorro.”
4) Cheaper by the Dozen 2: $19.3 million ($55.1 million, second weekend)
Still nothing to say about this, except that between this and “The Pink Panther,” Steve Martin is a dirty, dirty whore.
5) Rumor Has It…: $11.6 million ($26.7 million, second weekend)
Hi, I’d like a movie about some ‘60s Hollywood in-joke that no one outside of the 90028 zip code could possibly relate to, please.

DVD shuffle: 01/03/06 – New Year Edition

Ringing in the New Year on DVD this week:

1) Wedding Crashers – BUY: It’s been a long time since an R-rated comedy has done so well at the box office, and the unrated version (with an additional 8 minutes of footage) will surely be funnier, or at least raunchier.

2) Broken Flowers – RENT: Fans of director Jim Jarmusch will undoubtedly love his latest drama/comedy starring Bill Murray. Everybody else, however, will not.

3) The Cave – PASS: Do you really need a reason NOT to see this film? Okay… then click the link.

4) Dumb and Dumber: Unrated Edition – BUY: For those of you who still don’t own this movie need to run out and pick up this copy, but there’s not enough special features on the single-disc release to warrant replacing your older copy. A handful of alternated scenes and endings just isn’t a big enough selling point. Where are the commentary tracks by Carrey and Daniels?

Kevin Arnold, gay prodigal Hollywood failure

Fred Savage, former cute-as-a-button star of TV’s “Wonder Years,” is all growed up now…and will prove it by shaking up his image with a new comedy to air on ABC starting January 12. Called “The Crumbs,” the sitcom features Savage as Mitch, the “gay prodigal son who returns home from a failed Hollywood career,” and also stars Jane Curtin as the mother recently released from a psychiatric ward. TV stalwart William Devane–always thisclose to becoming a parody of himself–will play Savage’s skirt-chasing father, who is divorced from Curtin’s character.

The talent involved with the show is intriguing, but this one doesn’t exactly have “breakout hit” written all over it. It’s got a lousy title (reminiscent of Fox’s Randy Quaid dud “The Grubbs” from a few years back), and the script includes multiple references to Mitch’s deceased brother…because dead siblings are always comedy GOLD!

Savage himself admits that studio audiences viewing early tapes of the show “laugh at the wrong places, or don’t laugh at all sometimes.” He insists that this is a good thing, as it means they’re hitting a different tone than the standard sitcom slush — and he might be right about that. These dysfunctional characters just might have the next “Arrested Development” on their hands.

Then again, they might not. As Daniel Stern would likely narrate in voiceover at this point in the show, “Sometimes you just have to wait and see what happens.”

Boobs make for great cooking

Those bastards over at the Food Network have done it again. They got me to watch a cooking show that I otherwise wouldn’t have cared to see. The other day my wife was watching “Everyday Italian” with host Giada De Laurentiis (granddaughter of Dino De) and I became fixated. Soft focus Skinemax lighting, a low cut shirt, and breasts a-popping with plenty o’ nice cleavage. I sat there making lewd remarks every time she talked about spreading this or that and so forth. My wife sighed and did that laugh she does when she knows I’m a pathetic mess. I just said, “Who’s looking at the food?!” She of course said she had no interest in Giada’s boobs, which is understood.

However, it reminds me of when the Food network also ran that one show with chef Nigella Lawson, another buxom babe with a nice soft focus show and a cameraman who seemed hell bent on making sure you didn’t notice the food too much. I used to find myself being caught in the headlights (har har) of that one as well. So it’s my professional advice to you dudes out there who are looking for something titillating that isn’t the same old same old to check out some Giada or Nigella and get your freak on. Cooking complex shit for rich friends you will never have was never so good.

Let’s all hope Showtime isn’t crazy like a Fox

In the final episode of “Arrested Development,” creator Mitchell Hurwitz and crew went for broke with a hilarious episode about the Bluth family throwing a Save Our Bluths fundraiser named after the real-life website campaign (www.SaveOurBluths.com) designed to save the comedy series from cancellation.

The episode includes tons of ingeniously blatant cries for help, including narrator Ron Howard’s plead to “tell your friends about this show.” Later in the episode, Michael Bluth (played by Jason Bateman) says this: “Our backs are against the wall… It’s just hard for me to accept that it’s really come to begging… [but] we’ve had plenty of chances. Maybe the Bluths just aren’t saving. Maybe we’re not that likeable. Who’d want to spend a half-hour with us if they didn’t want to?” The character is of course only talking about the fictional family that the series revolves around, but we all know what he REALLY means, don’t we?

Other brief jokes include the possibility of other networks picking up the series, including a moment when George Sr. says that HBO won’t be able to make the party, but it doesn’t matter because it’s still show time! (read: Showtime, as in the premium channel that has expressed interest in buying the rights to the series). Touche, cast and crew of “Arrested.” Fox, it’s your move…
