Blu Tuesday: North by Northwest: 50th Anniversary Edition

north_by_northwest It’s been awhile since I’ve seen “North by Northwest,” so when it was announced that Warner Bros. would be releasing it on Blu-ray in conjunction with the film’s 50th anniversary, I couldn’t wait to check it out again. As expected, it’s like watching the film for the first time, because the movie looks brand new thanks to the brilliant restoration it’s undergone. Warner Bros. has really been on top of their game in regards to re-releasing classic movies in high definition, and though last month’s “The Wizard of Oz” was undoubtedly a much bigger deal than Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 genre mash-up, it’s still hard to deny the effect the film had on the industry.

Even those that haven’t seen the movie seem to know something about it – whether it’s the infamous crop-dusting plane chase sequence or the big finale on top of Mount Rushmore – and it’s been spoofed enough times throughout the years to know that it obviously had a big effect on several filmmakers. If there’s one complaint to be made about the new release, however, it’s that while the picture itself looks pretty darn flawless, the use of rear projection effects (of which there are many) are even more noticeable than they were before. Hitchcock may not have put too much stock in making his movies look realistic, but when your film looks like it was made yesterday but the effects are still dated, it’s a little disruptive.

Additionally, there isn’t quite as much going on in terms of bonus material. Owners of the previously released 2004 DVD will recognize the commentary by writer Ernest Lehman, as well as the Cary Grant biography, “A Class Apart,” and the Eva Marie Saint-hosted making-of special, “Destination Hitchcock.” Still, the latter two featurettes are definitely worth watching if you’re an avid fan of Grant or the film, and Warner Bros. has also included two new featurettes that are just as good. “The Master’s Touch” focuses on Hitchcock’s famous filmmaking techniques, while “North by Northwest: One for the Ages,” features an in-depth analysis of the film by directors like Curtis Hanson, William Friedkin and Guillermo del Toro that will almost certainly give you a new appreciation of what many believe to be Hitchcock’s best film. It’s no surprise that “North by Northwest” was the first to be given the Blu-ray treatment, but it really makes me wonder, how long are we going to have to wait before the others are released as well?

Blu Tuesday: The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition

When it comes to movie classics, there is none more beloved than Victor Fleming’s 1939 musical, “The Wizard of Oz.” Based on the popular children’s book by L. Frank Baum, the film has been featured on numerous “best of” lists and continues to captivate people of all ages to this day. In celebration of its 70th anniversary, Warner Home Video is releasing the movie for the very first time in high definition in a special collector’s set designed exclusively for the hardcore “Oz” fan. This four-disc box set includes over 16 hours of bonus material, a 52-page commemorative book about the making of the film, a reproduction of the original 1939 campaign book, a replica of the film’s budget sheet, and a limited edition watch.

Of course, the main draw of the set is the film itself, and while many have logged complaints about the film’s new hi-def transfer following the one-night special engagement in theaters across the country, there’s no truth behind any of them. Though a movie as old as “The Wizard of Oz” is never going to look as pristine as one from the last decade, the hours of work that went into restoring the film for its Blu-ray debut can be appreciated the minute Leo the MGM Lion comes on screen. It’s not perfect, mind you, but when compared to the many reissues over the years, this version is hands down the best one yet. Colors pop off the screen without looking oversaturated, while the sepia-toned segments look sharper than ever.

As expected with a movie as legendary as “The Wizard of Oz,” Warner Bros. has crammed as many special features onto the four-disc set as possible — to the point that it’s almost overkill. Granted, one of those discs only contains a digital copy of the film, but the other three more than make up for it. Disc One features the movie, as well as a new audio commentary by “Oz” historian John Fricke and a sing-along track. The previously released TV special, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Movie Classic,” hosted by Angela Lansbury also appears, as do featurettes on music, costumes and production design (“The Art of Imagination”) and the legacy of the film (“Because of the Wonderful Things It Does”).

The Fall

Anyone who has seen director Tarsem Singh’s first film, “The Cell,” knows how visually stunning his movies are, but that’s nothing when compared to his latest picture, an orgy of bright reds and blues that looks like it’s been ripped straight from the pages of a comic book. Four years in the making, “The Fall” takes place in 1920 Los Angeles where a Hollywood stuntman named Roy (Lee Pace) has been hospitalized following a near-fatal accident on set. His back may be broken, but his heart is completely shattered when he learns that his lover has left him for another man. To help pass the time, Ray strikes up a friendship with a little girl named Alexandria (Catinca Untaru) – who, curiously enough, has also incurred an injury from a fall – and tells her the epic tale of Governor Odious and the five warriors who have vowed to defeat him. What Alexandria doesn’t realize, however, is that Ray has an ulterior motive – namely, to use the story as a means of tricking her into helping him commit suicide.

The Fall

Reminiscent of “Pan’s Labyrinth” in its blending of reality and fantasy, “The Fall” aims to take things one step further by reimagining the people in Alexandria’s life as characters in the story, à la “The Wizard of Oz.” Unfortunately, the film doesn’t flow quite as well as Guillermo del Toro’s adult fairytale, and it’s probably a result of its piecemeal construction. This affects both the story’s tonal consistency and the pacing, which makes the movie feel about twice as long as it really is. Still, it’s hard to deny that Tarsem has created something special, even if it isn’t as great as it could’ve been. The visuals are a treat as usual and the chemistry between his two stars is extraordinary considering the age gap and the fact that this is Untaru’s first-ever acting gig. In the end, it might be a little too weird for most moviegoers, but if you like your films colorful and offbeat (think Cirque du Soleil as directed by Terry Gilliam), “The Fall” may be right up your alley.
