Gore v. chills at the box office

I keep reading that the studios are reducing their outputs and that we’ll be seeing fewer new movies, but there’s sure no sign of it lately as we have another complicated week where, at least in theory, anything can happen. Still, the prognosticators agree that the latest entry in the first and longest running franchise in the sub-genre of torture-heavy horror, “Saw VI,” will likely win the week for Lionsgate.

On the other hand, there is also a consensus that the low-violence yet entirely potent chills of “Paranormal Activity” will be cutting into the Saw-bucks some also. Obviously, there is some audience crossover but, just as obviously, the most jaded gore hounds may find it beyond tame. I’ve already noted online the start of an inevitable backlash. I doubt this reaction will have the same angry potency that afflicted “The Blair Witch Project” so many moons ago. In that case, Lionsgate’s attempt to persuade less-savvy audiences that it might actually be real probably backfired later on, as did the over-hype of some of the early write-ups.

This time, Paramount has been more cleverly circumspect than the “Blair Witch” marketers, simply making the case that the modest video-movie can really scare the bejesus out of an audience. I’m here to tell you it can, even though I feel sure that not a single person I saw it with was under any delusion that what we were watching was not staged. Still, you see the violence-loving fanboys complaining at certain sites. I mean, how can a movie be scary if it lets you imagine the worst of it? How is that ever going to work?

It’s probably pretty obvious by now, especially from my post just before this one, that I prefer the “Paranormal” approach and will be rooting for it but, despite the still growing excitement around the movie, it’s the definite underdog as “Saw VI” will be opening in 3,036 theaters, while it’s competitor will be expanding to a mere 1,900. However, the outstanding per-screen averages that the film has been nailing could compensate if some horror audiences find the prospect of yet another ultra-brutality fest less than ultra-appealing.

Though it’s yet another family-friendly CGI animated film, this one based on a property at least some of us remember from our childhoods, hopes are not all that astronomically high for the next film. Summit’s “Astro Boy” is based on the best known creation of Japan’s “God of Manga” Osamu Tezuka, who basically invented both manga and anime as we now know them and who created some of the best comic books for adults that I’ve ever read. Of course, you’d never know from the horrendously lame gag at the end of the trailer or the often ugly CGI animation that ruins the beautiful 2-D (black and white, too!) of the early Tezuka cartoons as scene in the trailer. This appears to be another case of a studio adapting a property and missing what made the original work.

Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! – Season 2

There aren’t many shows that can, in the span of fifteen minutes, consistently make you want to laugh, hurl, and stare blankly at the screen in equal measure. As such, “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” continues to deserve our respect, but it also can prove to be an extremely frustrating viewing experience if you’re not on precisely the same comedic wavelength as Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim. Though comparisons to “Mr. Show” are inevitable, particularly when both David Cross and Bob Odenkirk make appearances, Tim and Eric tend to get way, way, way out there with their comedic concepts. The cable-access feel of the show aids them in getting away with any oddities their minds can conceive, whether it’s Richard Dunn interviewing Dave Navarro, the comedy stylings of James Quall, or the gospel according to Dr. Steve Brule (played by John C. Reilly), but for every hilarious TV show parody like “The Snuggler” are funny, there’s a too-gross bit like Bradley Michael Fahrtz advertising the Poop Tube. As a result, you find yourself both attracted to and repelled by the show, which is probably exactly the sort of reaction that Tim and Eric were looking for. As for the DVD set, there are a wealth of special features, including deleted scenes, outtakes, footage from the show’s official fan gathering (Awesomecon 2008), and a 45-minute-long featurette which documents the guys’ 2008 tour. But, really, the whole set is worth getting just so you can watch and listen to “Petite Feet” over and over again.

The Promotion

If you were to compile a list of the most disappointing films of the year, “The Promotion” would sit pretty far at the top. Written and directed by Steven Conrad (perhaps best known for penning “The Pursuit of Happyness”), the film stars Seann William Scott as Doug, the assistant manager of a major supermarket in Chicago. When the opening of a new location prompts Doug to apply for the coveted manager position, he’s considered a shoo-in by his boss (Fred Armisen) – that is, until fellow assistant manager Richard (John C. Reilly) decides to compete for the job as well. But instead of proving to the board executives (led by Gil Bellows) why they’re the best candidate, Doug and Richard engage in a juvenile squabble that threatens to ruin both of their chances. Unfortunately, none of it is very funny, and Conrad is entirely to blame. The script just doesn’t make the most of its ingenious setup. As the narrator of the film, you’d think Doug was the main protagonist, but then the focus shifts to Richard, and you’re left to wonder who it is you’re supposed to be rooting for. With the exception of a funny cameo by Jason Bateman as the coordinator of a company retreat, “The Promotion” is a complete bore. It had the potential to flourish as the grocery store equivalent of “Office Space,” but instead, it only feels like a slightly better rendition of “Employee of the Month.”
