American Idol: not a huge shock this week

Last week the collective viewership gasped when Pia Toscano was cut from “American Idol,” but it wasn’t quite that way this time. The results show began last night with Scotty and Lauren doing a duet of Lady Antebellum’s “American Honey.” It was really pretty good. Then there was the behind the scenes of the zombie themed Ford video, and then the video, which was mildly amusing. After that, Haley and Casey growled through a jazz tune called “Moanin’.” That wasn’t bad either.

Finally, some results. Lauren, Scotty, Casey and Haley–the first three all safe, Haley in the Bottom 3. Then they showed Rob Reiner coaching them all this past week. Really? Rob Reiner? After that Kelly Clarkson and Jason Aldean did their new single, “Don’t You Wanna Stay?” and that was really good too! Hey, not a bad results show.

Then Paul, Stefano, James and Jacob did a medley of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sounds of Silence” and “Mrs. Robinson.” Talk about a group of four that don’t belong together. Yikes. Not a great performance either. Time for results. James and Jacob, safe. Stefano and Paul, both in the Bottom 3. Then Rihanna sang her new single, “California King Bed.” Man, that was good too! A catchy song, with NO auto-tune. Imagine that. It was actually a really good pop/rock tune.

Then it was time for the results. Haley, safe. So down to Stefano and Paul. Going home…Paul McDonald. He went first on Wednesday and gave a lukewarm performance, while Stefano had one of his best yet. So that’s it. We’re now down to seven, and Paul was the first guy eliminated in the finals, which was quite interesting.

We’re getting closer and closer, and the talent pool is still very thick this season. Let’s see what happens next week, but I think Haley and Stefano should definitely be next to go. See you all next week…

American Idol: say what?

Yeah, I know, you’re all bitter about the results last night on “American Idol.” I am surprised, but not all that surprised. And least of all, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson shouldn’t be as shocked after they had a lukewarm reaction to the person sent home. Anyway, here is how it went down…..

The show began with a rock medley by the Top 9 that was really boring as usual. Then actor/comedian Russell Brand was brought in as a charisma coach this past week. Really? That guy is really not funny. Then, on to the results….

American Idol: this ain’t gonna be easy

Last night at the close of the episode of “American Idol,” Ryan Seacrest asked the judges who they thought would be eliminated tonight. They were dumbfounded, and well they should be. This group is insanely talented, and most of them just keep delivering the goods each week. And as they move through the weeks, the best of the best even make it more difficult to vote. So here is how it went down, and I’m going to try my best to base this on my own judging and not that of the judges.

THE INSANELY AMAZING
Casey Abrams was going to do The Police’s “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” but instead went with Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” Good choice, and he accentuated it by playing stand-up bass and only a mandolin player to accompany him. And it was, and I don’t want to understate this, pure magic. Casey is an artist, more so than just about anyone left standing, and it’s mind blowing to me that the almost went home two weeks ago. Randy said Casey made CCR proud and that he made upright bass cool, Steven said Casey is a true musician and J-Lo said she would pay top dollar to be in the front row to watch Casey perform as she was last night.

American Idol: two go home

That sound you hear is me patting myself on the back, but more on that in a minute. Last night’s “American Idol” results show was a bit different than usual, as they had contestants perform in small groups rather than in those larger, pageant-type numbers. And I liked it.

They kicked off with the two country singers, Lauren and Scotty, performing “I Told You So,” and it was really, really good. Then Ryan Seacrest told them that they were both….safe!

American Idol: back down to earth

Last week, the performances on “American Idol” were among some of the best the show has ever seen. So where would they go this week, singing the songs of Elton John? They had to at least, to some degree, stumble back to earth. Right? Well some did, but some stayed on the same level they were on or even climbed higher. This is just a remarkable group of singers. Anyway, here is the recap as I saw it…….

THE AWESOME
I’m going to put one singer in this category today, and that was pimp spot lady, Haley Reinhart. Haley has been in the Bottom 3 multiple times, trying to find herself. But this time, she flew away, literally, singing a lounge version of “Bennie and the Jets.” I’m not keen on the Amy Winehouse impersonation thing, but Haley nailed the song, showing incredibly dynamics, and then just nailing the “Ben-Nay! Ben-Nay!” parts. J-Lo said “that was IT!” and that it all came together for Haley; Randy said it was the best performance of the night; and Steven said it was a well-placed chorus and added, “You sing sexy!” All of them were correct, and it was great to see Haley hit a home run in honor of baseball season starting today.
