Readers ask about “Night Shift,” I listen

I have to say, I wasn’t expecting the quick flurry of requests for information about SoapNet’s new series, “General Hospital: Night Shift,” but let it not be said that I don’t follow up on these things.

First off, if you’re not in with the in crowd, here’s a brief explanation of what’s up with this show, courtesy of the network’s official press release:

“General Hospital: Night Shift” – a one-hour scripted original drama – premieres July 12, 2007 at 11PM (ET/PT) on SOAPnet. “General Hospital: Night Shift” is a 13-episode series that goes beyond what is seen in daytime to reveal the lives and loves of “General Hospital’s” favorite characters during the hospital’s night shift.

The series will also reveal new faces and complications in Port Charles. The show starts with a bang when a dangerous explosion sends the hospital into chaos. Robert Guza Jr., head writer for “General Hospital,” and Jill Farren Phelps, executive producer, “General Hospital,” write and produce “General Hospital: Night Shift,” respectively.

I dropped a line to Jori, the show’s publicist over at Disney (SoapNet’s parent company, if you didn’t know) to let them know that I’d definitely be in attendance for their panel at the press tour, though I admitted it was half because our readers were asking about it and half because I wanted a chance to meet Billy Dee Williams, who’ll be one of the stars of the series. It therefore cut me to the quick when she wrote back and said…

Hell’s Kitchen: The Bitches Are Back

Last night’s “Hell’s Kitchen” was proof that this is one of the most underrated shows in television. When Chef Ramsey got up in Melissa’s face, it was one of the finest moments on the show, bar none.

The show started with Bonnie admitting that she was starting to feel overwhelmed, and that she was maybe cracking just a little. Then Ramsey announced that this episode would feature the contestants cooking for a wedding reception. But first, a challenge. The teams had to create an appetizer, a fish dish, and a meat dish for the bride and groom to taste and put on their wedding menu. Each team was also given a $100 budget for this to go shopping.

During the challenge, Melissa started barking orders at her teammates, who began to get more and more frustrated with her. She blamed Julia for something she did and Julia said “oh hell no, don’t turn that around on me.” So after an episode of overcooked duck breast, the guys won the challenge. That meant the ladies had to decorate the restaurant for the wedding reception, under the supervision of a limp-wristed wedding planner. The guys, meanwhile, got massages at a spa….yeah, tell me the producers weren’t hoping for the ladies to win the challenge so they could show us a glimpse of Bonnie’s butt crack.

So the ladies, back to being “Hell’s Bitches” again, were bickering back at the ranch. Melissa told Julia that she needed to “grow a set of bawls”….oh, I can’t stand her. Plus, she had this annoying little scratch on her chin that looked like Scott Spiezio’s goatee. Hell, maybe it WAS a goatee. This woman is pure evil.

During the dinner service, Melissa messed up the potatoes and tried to blame Rock. Rock had none of that and Ramsey knew better. Meanwhile, Jen and Julia did a good job and Ramsey gave them props. Then Ramsey yelled at the wedding planner for good measure…and said something to the effect of “get the f–k out of here.” He also got right up in Melissa’s face, to which this stone-faced evil woman just said, “yes chef.” Well, you can’t say she doesn’t have ice water in her veins.

The ladies were declared the losing team, and it was definitely a good day all around for the guys. So Ramsey asked Jen to nominate two of her teammates for elimination. This was difficult, because it should have been Melissa and Melissa. But Jen also chose Bonnie just based on past services. Then came the shocker….Ramsey didn’t eliminate either of them, but instead sent Melissa to the guy’s team to see if she would fare better. Look, a bitch is a bitch is a bitch, and the guys will not stand for her crap either….least of all Rock who I still think is going to possibly win it all.

With the previews, it looks like there may be two contestants eliminated next week…either way, it’s getting mighty interesting as we barrel through the summer. See you next week…

Help Bullz-Eye get the scoop on the fall TV season!

But not yet.

Sorry, just trying to start raising the excitement level a little bit. But here’s what’s going to be going on:

I’ll be attending the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, which takes place at the Beverly Hilton from July 10th – 26th. Actually, I won’t be able to arrive ’til the 12th, so, unfortunately, I’ll miss the panels on the 10th and 11th, which are spotlighting the upcoming season for PBS, and, because of my flight time, I’ll also miss the first panels of the day on the 12th itself, so I won’t be able to tackle the new shows on Lifetime and FX…and, yeah, I know you don’t care that much about the Lifetime panels, but I’m sure you’re as bummed as I am about missing out on the FX stuff. Fortunately, I should still be able to get a transcript of the panels; I just won’t be able to score any one-on-one time with any of the actors.

Below, I’m going to list the shows I’m going to be trying to get the inside scoop on. If you’re particularly interested in my finding out about a specific series, please leave a comment to tell me which show (or shows), and I’ll do my best to get as much info as possible, as well as to speak with individual actors and actresses if the opportunity presents itself. I’ll be blogging the tour on a daily basis, so be sure to check back every day starting on the 12th!

And, now, the shows…and be forewarned: there are a LOT of them!

Snap, crackle and sizzle

If there’s one thing “Entourage” is notorious for, it’s setting up potentially earth-shattering events and then brushing them off as if they never happened. The latest offender occurred as a result of last week’s episode, when Eric and Vince came to a standstill on their decisions about Walsh’s early cut of “Medellin.” Everyone (including myself and pinch blogger Jamey Codding) seemed to think this meant the two friends would finally clash, but it never quite came to fruition.

It’s the day after, and Eric’s opinions on Walsh’s cut haven’t changed one bit. He’s got a few changes he’d like to discuss with the director, but when he goes to see him at his post-production hideout, Walsh doesn’t take too kindly to Eric’s notes. It’s not that Eric thinks the film is bad (he does think it’s too long), but rather that it still needs some serious molding, especially after an editor shows him a slick trailer for the film that would surely get people to theaters. When Walsh informs Eric that he’s already submitted the film to Cannes (the French Sundance), however, Eric gets paranoid about the possibility of it getting rejected and turns to Ari for help.

Ari suggests he go see big-time producer Harvey about the possibility of buying the rights to the film (who would refuse to release Walsh’s cut of the film in theaters and re-edit the film to their liking), and despite their differences in the past, Harvey offers Eric $25 million for the film. When Eric tells Vince the good news, he gets a little of his own: the film was accepted into Cannes, and Vince thinks they’ve got a shot at s much better deal if they bring the film to the festival on their own. Boy is Harvey going to be pissed.

Speaking of Vince, he spent of the episode doing what he does best: being a celebrity. After a happenchance run-in with some hot chick on the road, Vince joins her to go chill at Dennis Hopper’s place where the man himself chats about his time on the set of “Apocalypse Now” and turns on Vince to betting on soccer matches. After nearly losing $100,000 to an 11th-hour missed penalty kick by Rudd van Nistelrooy (a match which couldn’t have conceivably aired any later than 2006, since van Nistelrooy no longer plays for Manchester United), Vince dodges a bullet when the guy who was supposed to place the bets fails to do so in favor of some much needed rest.

And while Eric is busy trying to save his ass, and Vince is off betting money he doesn’t have, Turtle joins Drama for a promising double date with two older (but supposedly sexy) women friends of his. When they arrive at Donna Davine’s place, however, Turtle discovers that the friend in question is Marjorie, a chubby and overly spunky gal who he most certainly doesn’t want to bang. He agrees to take one for the team, though, and comes out on top in the end. Just as the quartet prepares to split up and have a little fun, Donna (the good-looking one) decides she’d rather be with Turtle, leaving Drama to fend for himself against “the best rimjob in town.” Everybody now: “Ewwwwww!”

Because Fox hasn’t screwed over fans of “Drive” enough…

…now they’ve decided not to run the Nathan Fillion series’ last episodes on the 4th of July as promised; instead, they’ve moved them to run on Friday the 13th.

Sure, why not? After all, the show’s had such crappy luck, why not end it on a day that’s universally considered to be the absolute unluckiest?

(Actually, the odds of people actually seeing the show probably increase tenfold by not airing it on a national holiday, but, dammit, we’re still pissed about Fox’s unceremonious yanking of the show in the first place…)
