Today on Film Geek’s Corner: Edgar Wright salutes “Danger: Diabolik”

With the passing of the great producer Dino De Laurentiis earlier this week, it’s probably an apt time to run this installment of “Trailers from Hell.” For all his robust crassness, De Laurentiis usually aligned himself with the most distinctive directors around. Below, distinctive director Edgar Wright — most recently of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” — discusses a very silly film by another acclaimed distinctive geek auteur, Mario Bavo.

Personally, I find Bava’s films a little bit hard to watch straight through. On the level of narrative, they’re kind of a mess and I can’t live on visuals alone. On the other hand, what visuals. After the flip, I’ll present the regular trailer sans commentary, and also that Beastie Boys video Edgar Wright alluded to.

The Beiber Story

When it came to musical biopics, in the past, it was traditional to leave out details considered scandalous about famous people. Now, of course, you need a certain amount of darkness and struggle to be credible. I mean, if you want to do a “warts and all” portrayal of someone too young, wholesome, and just plain lucky to be scandalous or starkly dramatic, you’re going to have add a wart or two.

Thanks to Babelgum Comedy for this.

A second trailer for a Tuesday night: “Tron: Legacy”

I won’t harp on it tonight as I’ve mentioned it before and will undoubtedly mention it again, but after revisiting it recently, I’m am so not a fan of Disney’s 1982 “Tron” that anything under 1000 words can’t really do my dislike any justice.

Nevertheless, I know a lot of you are fans. So, here is the latest official full length trailer for the long awaited (but not by me) sequel, “Tron: Legacy.”

Tuesday night trailer: “Jane Eyre”

I’m not sure how I’ve managed it, considering I was an English major throughout high school and half of college and all, but I’ve somehow managed to miss not only Charlotte Bronte’s novel, but every film and television version so far of “Jane Eyre.” Nevertheless, after hearing actress Sally Hawkins — who appears for half a second in this trailer — praise the director yesterday in casual conversation at a press day, and seeing the trailer below, I not only am looking forward to the movie, which stars the fast-rising pair of Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender as well as Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, and Imogen Potts, I think it might be time for me to read the book. I’m a sucker for mistreated child stories.

By the way, that director is Cary Fukunaga, who pulled off a very impressive debut with “Sin Nombre.” Promising.

Monday’s trailer: It’s a “Bangkok Knockout”

I saw Takashi Miike’s rather astonishing “13 Assassins” last night at the AFI Film Festival and, though I’ll be discussing it more later, let’s just say my affection for Asian action action films has been born anew. But first, the wondrous spirit of the 80s-90s golden age of Hong Kong cinema lives — in Thailand and directed by Panna Rittikrai, the martial arts choreographer of the Tony Jaa vehicle, “Ong Bak.” That movie had some pretty amazing sequences, but it sure looks like the ante has been upped considerably.

This trailer, by the way, is in Thai and has no subtitles, but never fears, it speaks the international language of gloriously arranged mayhem.
