Thursday night showdown: Preliminary Nielsen results

The Nielsen ratings for last night’s season premieres are in, and it’s a mixed bag.

On the plus side, ABC powerhouse “Grey’s Anatomy” beat former Thursday night champ “CSI” handily, scoring a 10.9 rating against the key Adults 18-49 demographic group vs. a still respectable 7.5 rating for “CSI.” This was one of the more highly-contested time slots on the entire fall schedule, and while “Grey’s” ratings may settle a bit lower after any cliffhanger-related curiosity ratings wear off, the gap is wide enough that ABC would still appear to have the edge for the near future.

More disappointingly, the season premieres of Emmy-award-winning comedy “The Office” and its lead-in “My Name Is Earl” were trounced not only by “Survivor” (which was perhaps to be expected), but also by a “Grey’s Anatomy” clip show.

Yes, you read that correctly: More people tuned in to view a CLIP SHOW of “Grey’s Anatomy” material from LAST SEASON than bothered to find out what happened after Jim and Pam kissed.

Is there no justice in the world?

The Dunder-Mifflin mystery

This was mentioned on the site before, but the accountants of Dunder-Mifflin have solved the mystery of the missing $3000. Get ready for the season premiere this Thursday by watching the 10 webisodes at the official NBC website.

The webisodes feature Kevin, Angela and Oscar as they try to track down money missing from the company’s books. You won’t see Michael, Pam or Jim, but Dwight’s hilarious appearance in the tenth installment more than makes up for their absence.

Bullz-Eye’s TV Power Rankings Return!

Savor the moment, HBO. You currently own more than a quarter of our TV Power Rankings list, but with the imminent departure of “The Sopranos,” “Deadwood” and “Rome,” along with the TBD status of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and the oddly lengthy shooting schedule for the half-season “Extras,” the end of your reign as BE must-see TV could very well be nigh. For the moment, though, we heart you and wish you would ask us to the prom.

Unless Jack Bauer’s still single, in which case we’re spoken for.

Here’s a sample entry from our list:

13. Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO): It seems like a long time between seasons of this great comedy, and I often wonder during the show’s hiatus: What trouble is Larry David into right now? Last season, he had to decide whether or not to give one of his kidneys to Richard Lewis. Richard’s cousin, Louis Lewis, was (conveniently) in a coma and Larry kept visiting him in the hospital, secretly hoping that Louis would croak so that Richard could have Louis’ kidney instead. The other season-long storyline was Larry investigating the possibility that he was adopted, leading to several funny scenes with his supposed gentile birth parents. The show isn’t quite as fresh as it was in its first couple of seasons, but with episode titles like, “The Korean Bookie,” “The Christ Nail” and “Kamikaze Bingo,” how could you be? ~John Paulsen
