“I Swear To God, It’s Not For Me, But…” (#4)

…Walt Disney Pictures has temporarily allowed “Pooh’s Grand Adventure” out of the Disney vault for your purchasing enjoyment.

There are very few latter-day sequels to Disney classics that I’m willing to put my stamp of approval on, but this is one of them…and that’s mostly because it features two of the original “Pooh” voices: John Fiedler as Piglet, and Paul Winchell as Tigger. (If you didn’t hear, the actors both died in 2005…within a day of each other, eerily enough.) Also, however, this was at least a theatrical release, instead of one of those crappy straight-to-video pieces of crap like, say, “Bambi 2002.” The big thing about this DVD that will suck in “Pooh” purists even if they don’t want to embrace the film itself is that, as a special feature, Disney has included the Academy Award winning short, “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day.”

Be sure to grab “Pooh’s Grand Adventure” quickly if it’s the kind of thing that tickles your fancy at all. It won’t be long before it’s put back in its slot in the Disney vault…right next to that original version of “Song of the South” that Walt used to play at parties.

A crappy disaster remake and a crappy Lindsay Lohan movie. Take your pick.

Actually, I’d much rather go for a second-helping of “M:I-3,” even if it does mean that I have to put up with Tom Cruise’s crazy mug for another two hours. At least it’s not another disaster movie, or another romantic comedy. And while both films have some nice eye candy to stare at (Lohan in “Just My Luck” and Emmy Rossum in “Poseidon“), it’s just not enough to persuade me to spend ten of my very hard-earned dollars. Then again, Touchstone’s soccer drama, “Goal! The Dream Begins,” is probably worth the pocket change, and if you’re in LA/NY, you might want to think about checking out the Brit revenge flick “Dead Man’s Shoes.”

Out on DVD this week:

1) Munich – BUY: It’s a real shame that this film was released when it was, going up against other nominees like “Brokeback Mountain” and “Crash” at the Oscars, because it would have had a much better chance any other year.

2) Grandma’s Boy – PASS: Ever wonder why gamers get such a bad rep? This is it.

3) The New World – PASS: I’m not even going to waste my time coming up with something witty to say about this movie. It sucked… real bad. Period.

4) Rumor Has It – RENT: I haven’t gotten around to checking this one out yet (it’s sitting on top of my DVD player as we speak), but I’m confident that it’ll be worth checking out at least once for the cast alone.

Also out this week are special editions of “Ronin,” “The Poseidon Adventure,” “The Towering Inferno,” and “Earthquake,” as well as new season releases of “Scrubs,” “The West Wing,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “That 70s Show,” and “The Golden Girls.”

I Swear To God, It’s Not For Me, But… (#3)

Admit it, guys: you’ve laughed at “The Golden Girls.”

You might not call it one of your favorite shows of all time, but we’ve checked with the folks at Nielsen, and they have documentation which clearly demonstrates that, whenever you’re at home alone, you’re flipping through the channels, and you find an episode on Lifetime – and lord knows it’s on all the damned time – you sometimes stop and watch.

Season 5 of “The Golden Girls” is being released on DVD on Tuesday, May 9th. Yeah, I know, if it’s on Lifetime constantly, why buy it? Well, unlike a lot of the bare-bones sets coming out nowadays, this one features several commentaries from the Girls themselves: Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White. (Sadly, Estelle Getty has, for some years now, been suffering from Dementia with Lewy bodies, which is – God help her – reportedly like a cross between Parkinsons and Alzheimers.) Arthur and McClanahan have a tendency to drift into watching the show, laughing at what’s onscreen, and offering comments like, “We were a great bunch of gals,” but White’s commentaries are particularly interesting and full of trivia…like, for instance, how she was originally considered to play Blanche (McClanahan’s role) but that the producers felt it would be too much like her character Sue-Ann Nivens on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

Ah, who am I kidding? You’re not going to buy it…but, y’know, Mother’s Day IS right around the corner. So if you buy it for your mom, I’m sure she won’t tell anyone if you borrow it…

Out on DVD this week:

1) Family Stone – RENT: For those who were expecting a family comedy, I feel your pain, but that doesn’t make this movie bad. In fact, it’s one of the better family holiday films out there.

2) Last Holiday – PASS: Queen Latifah has made ONE good movie. This isn’t it.

3) Delicatessen – RENT: Before Hollywood went all nuts on making sick and twisted films like “Saw” and “Hostel,” the French were already doing it… except they find it funny!

Also out this week is a re-issue of “Wyatt Earp,” season six of “King of the Hill,” a whole slew of classic shows on DVD (including “I Love Lucy” and “Leave it to Beaver”), and the made-for-TV version of “United 93.”
