Out on DVD this week:

1) 16 Blocks – RENT: Bruce Willis is starting to make a habit out of appearing in surpringly good movies. First, “Hostage,” and now this. What can we expect next year?

2) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang – RENT: If you liked the “Lethal Weapon” films (or at least the first two), you’ll absoultely love Shane Black’s latest entry into the buddy cop genre. The DVD, however, doesn’t offer enough extras to warrant a purchase.

3) The Pink Panther – RENT: I actually would have liked to have seen this in theaters, but had to pass in favor of the dreadful “Firewall.” Steve Martin has been very disappointing as of late, but I can’t imagine this film being nearly as bad as most of the critics made it out to be.

4) The World’s Fastest Indian – BUY: Easily one of the best films of 2006. The DVD is also quite impressive, and the inclusion of the 1971 documentary “Offerings to the God of Speed” only makes it that much better.

Also out this week is the soccer hooligan film “Green Street,” a re-release of Steve Martin’s “LA Story,” two special editions of “The Princess Bride,” and a few new TV-on-DVD releases including “Coach: Season One,” “Medium: Season One,” “Cheers: Season Eight,” and “Dead Zone: Season Four.”

Out on DVD this week:

1) Underworld: Evolution – RENT: The film is nowhere close to as entertaining as the original, but fans of the series will still want to check out how the next chapter shapes up.

2) Firewall – PASS: Harrison Ford is getting old. Here’s proof.

3) Glory Road – RENT: D’you “Remember the Titans”? Well, it’s the same movie, but with basketball.

4) Running Scared – RENT: I’ve yet to see the Paul Walker crime thriller, but I’m eager to. That’s gotta count for something.

5) Entourage: Season Two – BUY: The series only gets better, and the second season is evidence of that.

6) Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid: Collector’s Edition – BUY: The ultimate onscreen duo: Newman. Redford.

Also out this week is a special unrated edition of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” Sarah Silverman’s “Jesus Is Magic,” the Criterion release of “Dazed & Confused,” and five themed actor packs from FOX for George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Aniston.

Out on DVD this week:

1) Date Movie – PASS: While the “Scary Movie” films have made me laugh on occassion, this spoof of the romantic comedy genre is about as funny as walking in on your parents having sex.

2) Freedomland – PASS: Didn’t see this. Didn’t want to.

Also out this week are special editions of “Platoon” and “Smokey and the Bandit,” the “Marilyn Monroe: 80th Anniversary Collection,” season one releases of “Night Stalkers,” “Numbers” and “Joey.”

I knew it: Brett Ratner has killed the “X-Men” franchise

Despite how cool the most recent trailers for “X-Men: The Last Stand” were, that nagging little voice in the back of my head (the other voices, apparently, took the day off) kept whispering, “It’s Ratner, you dolt. Don’t get sucked in. It’s bound to end in heartbreak.”

And, if Variety is to be believed, that voice was right. Ugh. “Superman Returns” better be worth this, Singer. Until then, I’m taking you off of my Christmas card list.

On the subject of disaster movies…

…NBC has a made-for-TV epic coming up this Sunday and Tuesday – that’s right, it’s such an epic that it’s been split into a two-night affair – called “10.5: Apocalypse.”

It’s a sequel to the 2004 TV flick, “10.5,” and the effects are about as impressive as anything you’ve seen in a TV movie, but for God’s sake, don’t watch it without first taking a dose of dramamine. Director John Lafia has a technique that involves performing a sudden, shaky zoom-in on anyone who says a single word…kind of a poor man’s Sam Raimi. Maybe it’s supposed to give the proceedings a documentary-like feel, since the entire film was done in HD and, apparently, with handheld camera, but, personally, I burst into laughter, so often was it happening during an ostensibly tense scene. My wife finally asked if we could turn it off until such time as she was out of the room, because it was making her nauseous. I can’t say as I blame her. If you can get past that, though, it’s a fun – if utterly cliche-packed – ride, with Beau Bridges as the President of the United States, the ever-smoldering Kim Delaney as a sexy seismologist, Frank Langella as her estranged father, plus performances by Dean Cain, Gabrielle Beauvais-Nilon, Oliver Hudson, Carly Pope, and, oddly enough, Melissa Sue Anderson from “Little House on the Prairie.”

Don’t worry if you accidentally forget to watch the second half (because lord knows everyone’s done that at least once with a miniseries), because you can just about guarantee it’ll be out on DVD before Christmas…if not Labor Day.
