Google goes video

I didn’t know it till just over this past weekend, so I’m thinking you might not know it as well, but Google now has a beta version of Google Video now online. Scour the internet to watch all sorts of clips ranging from homemade music videos, TV clips, full-length features, and so much more. You could literally spend hours getting sucked into all the content. And of course, you can search for what you like (hint: a search for “ipecac” will take you to a particularly funny one for those into the more juvenile types of entertainment). The twisted beauty of the Internet is revealed once again by those mad geniuses over at Google. Man, I’m glad I work from home.

Box Office Roundup: Harry Potter meets Aeon Flux as a boy, walks away a man

Based on Sunday’s estimates:

1) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – $20.4 million (third weekend, $229.8 million to date).
Bored with beating AIDS victims and farm animals, Potter shows the world his dark side by adding fat people and dominatrix-clad contract killers to the mix.
2) Aeon Flux – $13.1 million (first weekend)
We are all for Charlize Theron in leather, but come on, give us some semblance of a story. Otherwise we’ll stick with the tried and true combination of “Devil’s Advocate” and a jar of Nivea.
3) Walk the Line – $10.0 million (third weekend, $68.7 million to date)
Showing Johnny’s roots is cool and all, but we would have loved to see Joaquin Phoenix shooting the “Hurt” video.
4) Yours, Mine and Ours – $8.4 million (second weekend, $34.5 million to date)
The only Yours, Mine and Ours thing we’re getting anywhere near is the Pernice Brothers’ 2003 album of the same name.
5) Just Friends – $5.6 million (second weekend, $21.1 million to date)
Fat suits are not funny, people.

Hail to the king, baby

In what might just be the most exciting news to come out of Hollywood all year, B-list favorite Bruce Campbell has announced he will star and direct the upcoming motion picture, “They Call me Bruce.” As reported on Bruce’s official site:

The film is “the tale of a small town set upon by demons after a group of teen-agers unwittingly unleash an ancient curse. Campbell, playing himself, is kidnapped off the set of a B horror movie and, despite his protestations that he’s just an actor, is forced to play the role of his heroic movie character in order to save the town.”

Anyone familiar with Bruce’s past work on the “Evil Dead” series has gotta love this news, but it’s doubtful that the film will see a wide release. Movie studio’s have long passed up on making Campbell a bonafide A-lister, and as the actor gets older, the chances that he’ll get any closer to making big slowly narrows. This announcement is still great news for fans of the B actor’s work, coming on the heels of last week’s rumor that a sequel to “Bubba Ho-Tep” was also in the works.

Lottery winner sends Trump packing; gays steal Tribbiani’s lunch money and time slot

The power of the white-trash ‘stache knows no bounds. Seeking to regain its former ‘Must-See TV’ luster on Thursday nights, NBC has revamped its lineup to reincorporate the two-hour sitcom block that worked so well for them in the past. Jason Lee’s freshman hit comedy “My Name is Earl” moves from Tuesdays to anchor the key 9pm (8pm Central) Thursday time slot previously held by “The Apprentice.” Meanwhile, ratings-deprived spinoff “Joey” will be off the air until at least March, replaced by “Will & Grace.”

The Thursday-night makeover is a step in the right direction. Joey has been floundering for weeks, and, between Donald and Martha, audiences are suffering from “Apprentice” overload this season. There’s still another new round of the Rug-Wearing One’s ego-fest left to air in the spring, but so far the real estate mogul’s program is without a home.

Will it make a difference? CBS is already entrenched on Thursday nights, with “Survivor” and “CSI” a bone-crunching one-two punch, and “Without a Trace” a strong (and less aged than “E.R.”) follow-up. “Will & Grace” will likely do better than “Joey”, but even Will and friends are showing their age, and the ongoing guest-star stunt-casting is a thinly-veiled cry for help. NBC just might have to get used to playing second fiddle, especially with UPN (of all networks!) now making a dent on Thursdays as well.

Perhaps Joey’s writers need to work on a storyline in which he is stranded on a desert island for 39 days, forced to use only his sharply-honed forensic skills to solve the murder of a missing child…

One less star is shining in the…

…cement.

According to Reuters, “Gregory Peck’s star has gone missing, believed stolen, from the Hollywood Walk of Fame by someone in possession of a cement saw and ‘very good taste,’ Hollywood’s honorary mayor Johnny Grant said on Wednesday. Grant, the former radio and TV star who is now chairman of the Hollywood Historic Trust, said the world famous pink star set in a black square that has honored Peck for more than 40 years had disappeared sometime in the last two weeks. ‘It was somebody who knew how to use a cement saw and was probably dressed as a construction worker,’ Grant said. ‘Whoever it was had very good taste.’ Grant said it would be difficult to dispose of the Peck star, adding that he was alerting eBay to anyone trying to sell it online. Police have been notified and are investigating.”
