Box Office Roundup: Are you ready for some football?

Based on Sunday’s estimates, courtesy of boxofficemojo.com:

1) Invincible: $15.2 million ($37.8 million, second week)
There is something to be said for a movie’s timing. Unlike, say, “Crossover,” which couldn’t have been released any father out of basketball season.
2) Crank: $13 million (first week)
When told that his movie finished behind a guy who used to do underwear commercials, “Crank” star Jason Statham had this to say.
3) The Wicker Man: $11.7 million (first week)
After seeing “The Wicker Man” over the weekend, Bullz-Eye editor and part-time movie critic Shelley “The Machine” Levine had this to say.
4) Little Miss Sunshine: $9.7 million ($35.8 million, sixth week)
Haven’t seen it yet. I got nothing.
5) The Illusionist: $8 million ($12.1 million, third week)
Did anyone else want to yank Rufus Sewell’s mustache off of his face, or was it just me?

∞) Snakes on a Plane: $0 million. It’s still playing in theaters, but it didn’t even show up on Box Office Mojo’s top 50 movies of the week. Note to the lowest New Line staffer on the totem pole: don’t go to that “surprise” birthday party, if you want to see the sun rise again.

It’s how he would’ve wanted to go.

And as God as my witness, I’m not trying to be an asshole when I say that about the fact that “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin was killed during an animal attack.

Granted, he probably would’ve preferred that the animal in question was a croc rather than a sting ray.

Irwin was filming an episode of “Ocean’s Deadliest,” and swam too close to one of the rays, which have a poisonous bard on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said. “He came on top of the stingray and the stingray’s barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart,” said Stainton, who was on board Irwin’s boat at the time. Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.

I must say, although I wasn’t a dedicated viewer of Irwin’s work, whenever I caught it, his enthusiasm was infectious. At least he went out doing the work that he loved…and that’s why I stand by the subject line.

If you hear the sound of water pouring…

…it’s probably just Trekkies pissing themselves with excitement at the announcement that Paramount has been in contact with both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy about the possibility of them being involved in J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek” film.

“The head of production at Paramount called my agency to tell them about this project and they are aware of Bill [Shatner]’s and my contribution to the franchise,” Nimoy explained, “and they’d like us to know they might want some involvement. It was all very, very general.

“They might possibly want Bill and I to set up the story as a flashback,” added Nimoy. “But that’s just conjecture on my part.”

By the way, it’s interesting to note that Nimoy had it written into his contract that he must approve of any other individual cast to play the role of Spock. Talk about thinking ahead…

Nike to sign Team Aniston, Slim Shady

Nike is apparently on verge of signing its largest-ever celebrity endorsement deal with none other than America’s Sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston. This announcement comes on the heels of news that Nike is also working with America’s Most Beloved Misogynist, Eminem, to design a series of limited-edition sneakers for charity. Presumably, Ms. Aniston and Mr. Shady will not be appearing in the same ads together.

Both endorsement deals seem to reflect an effort on Nike’s part to de-emphasize performance-focused messages (for while both Aniston and Mathers are fit, neither is known for his or her athletic prowess) in their advertising in favor of a more lifestyle and fashion-focused message.

It’s not entirely clear how these moves will mesh with the company’s age-old “Just Do It” tagline…but I’ll certainly check out whatever Aniston happens to be modeling once the ads hit the marketplace, and the strategy does seem a slightly smarter bet than the “Scarlett (hearts) Rbk” efforts over at Reebok.
