Winona gets naked for cancer instead of rock stars

That’s right: Winona Ryder is taking it all off…to promote skin cancer awareness. Holding strategically placed signage that reads “Protect the skin you’re in” and “Save your ass,” Ryder appears in the buff for a series of posters and t-shirts available for purchase at Marc Jacobs and elsewhere…but not, presumably, Saks Fifth Avenue.

Check out Best Week Ever and Egotastic for more on the story…and for one of the funniest headlines we’ve seen in quite some time.

Candy-gram…flowers… Land shark!

Scientists have discovered two new species of shark capable of walking on the tips of their fins, according to recent reports.

The existence of such “land sharks” has of course been rumored for decades, but evidence supporting the theory had been difficult to obtain, primarily because everyone who claimed to have seen one tended to end up bleeding to death as a result of massive internal and external injuries stemming from bite marks of an unidentifiable type.

Now, however, clever scientists have obtained photographic proof of the sharks’ existence…although, when pressed by reporters, each of the sharks in question still maintained that he was “only a dolphin.”

Box Office Roundup: Are you ready for some, um, more football?

Based on Sunday’s estimates, courtesy of boxofficemojo.com:

1) Gridiron Gang: $15million (first week)
Creepy. Two weeks ago, the #1 movie was football flick “Invincible,” which made $15.2 million. Maybe we’re all stuck in the Matrix after all, and this is one of those déjà vu moments.
2) The Black Dahlia: $10.4 million (first week)
Days from now, the agents for Aaron Eckhart, Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johannson will be found brutally murdered, without the pleasure of doing a stag film before their untimely deaths.
3) Everyone’s Hero: $6.2 million (first week)
We love baseball, but putting this out now makes as much sense as putting a basketball movie out in September.
4) The Last Kiss: $4.7 million (first)
Upon hearing the disappointing performance of Zach Braff’s latest movie, Eli Cash did a happy dance… in front of his 92” HDTV.
5) The Covenant: $4.7 ($15.7 million, second week)
Go rent “The Witches of Eastwick” instead. You’ll thank us later.

Proof that tact should never become a lost art amongst journalists.

Two weeks after telling police that her son had been snatched from his crib, Melinda Duckett found herself reeling in an interview with TV’s famously prosecutorial Nancy Grace. Before it was over, Grace was pounding her desk and loudly demanding to know: “Where were you? Why aren’t you telling us where you were that day?”

A day after the taping, Duckett, 21, shot herself to death, deepening the mystery of what happened to the boy.

Grace, meanwhile, remains utterly unapologetic, as you can see in this interview with “Good Morning America”, an attitude which resulted in an editorial at Slate.com – found here – that really takes her to task.

“24” ups the acting ante

Fox has announced that, come January, when “24” returns for its sixth season, the cast will include several new faces…but just because they’re new doesn’t mean they’ll be unfamiliar.

First off, we’ll meet Jack Bauer’s dad…but instead of going with the obvious choice – Donald Sutherland, duh – they’ve cast Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actor James Cromwell (“Babe,” “Six Feet Under”). We’ll also be seeing British actor / comedian Eddie Izzard as the villainous Darren McCarthy, as well as Kal Penn (KUMAR, baby!) and Alexander Siddig (“Syriana”…though he’ll always be Dr. Bashir from “Deep Space Nine” to me).

Damn. I don’t even watch the show, and I’m half-tempted to tune in, anyway.
