Eugene Levy must be putting a new wing on his house.

How else to explain his appearance in the straight-to-DVD sequel, “American Pie presents: Band Camp”? I didn’t even know anything about this coming out until there was a sticker on the front of the “40 Year Old Virgin” DVD hyping it, then there’s a preview for the flick on the disc as well. I’ve never heard of Tad Hilgenbrink, but he plays Stifler’s brother, who – if I’ve got the gist of it – is basically sentenced to attend band camp. Presumably, shenanigans and wacky hijinks ensue. You can’t argue Hilgenbrink’s resemblance to Seann William Scott, but, c’mon, does anyone really believe this is going to be any good…? I mean, fer chrissakes, if “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo” can score theatrical release, how awful must this be to go straight to video? I guess the studio figures it’s the straight-to-video crowd who’ll be most likely to watch it, anyway – the phrase “it might be worth a rental” is a staple of most movie-related conversations nowadays – but I question if it’ll be worth even that…

Have they started selling tickets yet?

Wilmer Valderrama is going to play Ponch in a big-screen version of “CHiPs.”

This is great news for two reasons: 1) the public is clamoring for another big-screen remake of a bad ’70s TV show and 2) Wilmer Valderrama is getting work.

The truth is, there just aren’t any original ideas left. Hollywood is giving away script deals to new writers left and right. In fact, the president of Warner Bros. called me the other day to see if I had any ideas for a movie. The best I could come up with was a remake of “Charles In Charge.”

I shouldn’t jest – it’s probably in the works.

Sometimes, you just get sucked into a bad movie…

…and this morning’s film du jour comes courtesy of TBS: “Three to Tango,” starring Matthew Perry and Neve Campbell. It’s pretty much a paint-by-numbers, simple-case-of-misunderstanding romantic comedy, one of those deals where the entire thing would come to a screeching halt if only Matthew Perry’s character only said, “I’m not gay.” He doesn’t, of course, until the grand finale…which plays out exactly as you’d think it would. The thing is, Neve Campbell is so damned cute that she keeps you watching the flick just to watch her. Also, Bob Balaban and John McGinley are in the movie, two guys who guarantee at least a few laughs.

Oh, crap. “Three to Tango” is over and “The Birdcage” is coming on. Time to flip over to TNT and watch “Twister”…

Million dollar babies

It may still be too late to save the dying box office, but it didn’t appear in its usual beat-up form after this past weekend. Strong performances by weekend openers “Chicken Little” and “Jarhead” brought in $68 million domestically, while “Saw 2,” the little sequel that could, continues to rack up a formidable box office take. To date, the horror sequel has made $60 million in just ten days, while the budget was a mere $4 million. Is cheap filmmaking the secret to reviving the box office, or is “Saw 2” just another case of being in the right place at the right time?

Didn’t you get the memo?

By far the worst DVD release of the year, “Office Space: Special Edition… with Flair!” is a huge disappointment for any fan of the film. The lack of solid bonus material won’t have owners of the previous DVD falling victim to Fox’s evil double-dipping ways, so who is this disc really targeted for? The holidays? Possibly. There’s absolutely no audio commentary (not even by writer/director Mike Judge, who we haven’t heard from in ages) and no outtake or blooper reels to be found, save for the two alternate takes of John C. McGinley on the included 26-minute featurette. Has the reissuing of films on DVD gone too far?
