Greatest hits

If you’ve been paying any attention to the “Lost” forums over the past couple months, you’re well aware of the heated discussions taking place over whether Dominic Monaghan would be leaving the show following the final Charlie-centric episode of the season. For the time being, it looks like fans can finally put their worries aside, as the London rocker managed to make through the entire episode without even a scratch. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll be alive and kicking when the two-hour season finale is all said and done, but I’ll get to that later.

The idea for tonight’s episode was a great one. Simply entitled “Greatest Hits,” we were treated to five flashbacks from Charlie’s past that he deemed the best moments of his life (an idea that he no doubt got from Naomi when he heard about the release of a Driveshaft “Greatest Hits” album released in the U.K.). In order from bottom to top they included 5) the day his band first heard their single on the radio, 4) learning how to swim with his dad, 3) receiving his brother’s coveted “DS” ring, 2) being called a hero after saving a woman from a street mugger, and 1) meeting Claire for the first time. The last one was probably a bit obvious, but it had an even greater impact as we watched him say his goodbyes to Claire and the baby. He didn’t exactly tell her where he was going, and it was probably for good reason, too.

You see, Desmond’s had another one of his visions, and this time it involves Claire being rescued by a helicopter. Great news, right? Well, sort of, but in order for the former to happen, Charlie must die. The key to his death lies in yet another hatch (this one underwater) called The Looking Glass, which involves him diving underwater and up into the hatch to flip a switch. Jack doesn’t want him to go on a silly suicide mission, however, and so the plan is called off. Of course, that’s before Carl (remember him?) paddles to shore with news that the Others won’t be arriving the next day as planned, but rather that night. With his plan to blow up the Others (with a shitload of dynamite, no less) still not completed, Sayid suggests that they blow up the TNT by shooting it instead. The rest of the survivors can then make their way to the radio tower and attempt to pick up a signal with Naomi’s SAT phone. This leaves only three survivors on shore, and it’s the group’s best shooters: Sayid, Jin and… Bernard? Okay, I didn’t see that coming.

Nevertheless, Jack leads the rest of the survivors to the radio tower while Sayid, Jin and Bernard prepare for the arrival of the Others. Meanwhile, Desmond and Charlie set off in search of The Looking Glass (which Sayid so brilliantly realizes is marked off by that random cable in the middle of the beat), and as was expected, Desmond offered to take Charlie’s place. I actually thought Charlie was going to take him up on the offer as well, but instead he just whacks him over the head with an oar and dives into the water.

Surprisingly, however, Charlie makes it to the opening of the hatch, but while he’s busy celebrating, a group of women Others surrounds him with guns. Not exactly what Charlie was expecting, but at least it means he has a fighting chance at making it to the next season. I’m personally glad to see him alive, but the wait isn’t over just yet.

As CBS releases its fall schedule, angry “Jericho” fans begin Googling for those sites they’ve heard about where you can learn how to build your very own atomic bomb

Okay, fine, we’d like to think that no-one out there is so completely obsessed with “Jericho” that they’d actually rationalize that it’d be reasonable payback to actually drop an A-bomb on CBS for cancelling the show…but, hey, I dropped a few F-bombs in CBS’s general direction, if that counts for anything. Of course, I also offered them at least a thousand thank-yous for their decision to renew “How I Met Your Mother,” so, as you can see, I’m having a little turmoil over my feelings toward the network.

So CBS has revealed what the 2007 – 2008 season has in store for its viewers, and rather than wallow in sorrow, let’s just see if they’ve got anything that help us through the process of mourning “Jericho.”

MONDAY

Again, despite our annoyances with them, let us at least sing the praises of CBS for keeping the consistently hysterical “How I Met Your Mother” on the air; “The Class,” however, did not make it beyond its freshman year (you knew I’d make that joke, didn’t you?), so it’s now been paired with “The Big Bang Theory.”

THE BIG BANG THEORY is a comedy from the Emmy Award nominated Co-Creator and Executive Producer of “Two and a Half Men” Chuck Lorre, about brainy best friends Leonard (Johnny Galecki, “Roseanne”) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons “Judging Amy”), who can tell you anything you want to know about quantum physics, but when it comes to dealing with everyday life here on earth they’re lost in the cosmos. Neither fully understands that scientific principles don’t always apply in matters of the heart — until they meet their sexy new neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco, “8 Simple Rules…”), a friendly screenwriter/waitress from the midwest who also happens to be newly single. She quickly makes an impression on the other members of Leonard and Sheldon’s geek squad — Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg, “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”), who portrays himself as the Casanova of Cal Tech, and fellow whiz kid Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar, “NCIS”), who is rendered speechless around anyone unprepared to converse about the Theory of Relativity or other scientific jargon. The chemistry between this gaggle of geniuses and a delightful damsel is about to undergo a stimulating series of inter-personal experiments. Multiple Emmy Award winner James Burrows (“Will & Grace”) directed the pilot. Lorre and Bill Prady (“Gilmore Girls,” “Dharma & Greg”) are executive producers for Warner Bros. Television.

Okay, there’s potential here, since everyone knows that geeks = funny…but, then, I’m a geek, and we always prefer to laugh at ourselves. (It’s so much less painful than when others laugh at us.) Otherwise, Monday night remains essentially unchanged; it’s “Two and a Half Men,” “Rules of Engagement,” and “CSI: Miami.” Hey, look, another excuse to link to seven minutes of David Caruso’s best (read, “most groan-inducing”) one-liners!

It’s the end of the world as you know it…

…if your world was revolving around “Jericho” coming back for a second season.

Because it isn’t.

Yep. CBS officially dropped the cancellation bomb.

I’m not saying I didn’t see it coming. I’m just saying that I’m not happy about it, and I hope that the networks learn that this whole splitting-a-season-into-halves concept isn’t worth the resulting loss of ratings. Even CBS’s chief scheduling executive, Kelly Kahl, admitted, “We lost a lot of steam,” adding that “I know we had loyal viewers…but the show sort of lost its engine and wasn’t performing.” That’s because fans will always come back to a show they love, but the on-the-fence crowd has an attention span that’s barely an hour long; mild interest doesn’t turn into legitimate fascination when a show vanishes for two months.

No mention of a TV movie to wrap up the loose ends, either. Damn. That really, really sucks. If anyone knows people affiliated with the show – and it’s worth asking, since you never know who reads these things – have them drop me a line at WHarris (at) Bullz-Eye.com; I’d really like to know what Season 2 would’ve looked like…and I know there are at least a few others out there who share my curiosity.

As ABC releases its fall schedule, Geico ad executives continue to pinch themselves and give each other high-fives

Yep, ABC’s released their 2007 – 2008 schedule, and, as you probably guessed from the title of this posting, the biggest focus isn’t on how good or bad the new shows look but, rather, how lazy it looks for the network to have picked up a series that’s inspired by a series of commercials. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely laugh every time one of those commercials is on, but that doesn’t mean I want a half-hour series based on them…especially not when it means that “The Knights of Prosperity” gets cancelled and “The Thick of It” – starring Michael McKean, Oliver Platt, John Michael Higgins, and Alex Borstein – is passed over for pick-up. (How does that happen, anyway? The pilot was directed by Christopher Guest, fer crissakes!)

But that’s enough complaining for the moment. This is intended as an educational post, not a bitter diatribe. (Besides, there’ll be plenty of time for that sort of material in our Fall TV Preview!) So let’s take a look at how the fall schedule will look…and, uh, let’s also clarify that we’ll probably still end up getting snarky along the way.

MONDAY

We begin with more of that star-dancing crap at 8:00 PM…an hour and a half of it, apparently, since it isn’t until 9:30 that we’re scheduled to see the new Christina Applegate sitcom “SAM I AM.”

Sam I Am” – When a terrible accident leaves Samantha “Sam” Newly in a coma for eight days, she wakes up with no recollection of any past experiences, memories or events. Faced with amnesia, Sam must start over. To her dismay she discovers that she wasn’t a particularly honest, good-hearted or loving person. In fact she was self-involved, narcissistic and devoid of real relationships – essentially a bitch. Sam must now struggle with her desire to be good and her temptation to be…not so good. Finding the line between good and evil is never easy.

Um…that’s a comedy? Well, anyway, after that, 10 PM finds another season of “The Bachelor,” which means we can’t get to Tuesday night soon enough.

Back Off Bitch

“The Shield” went back to the days of old this week, where an episode would focus on a single case, and the topic at hand was the San Marcos massacre. After the Biz-Lats retaliate against the El Salvadorians by killing women and children at a street fair, tensions are heightened leading to a personal threat from the Asst. Chief to shut down the Barn. Blaming Hernan for the misinformation that has caused the case to remain unsolved for so long, Vic makes a deal with the undercover agent that will help him earn his stripes within the gang. Even though Vic thinks the guy “is kind of an asshole,” it’s difficult for him to turn down such a promising venture.

I have a feeling that Hernan is just looking out for himself (and quite possibly integrating into the gang he’s supposed to be investigating). Although his intel did land the Barn three of the six San Marcos murderers (who were engaged in a private gangbang when the Strike Team picked them up), his sudden disappearance at the end of the episode doesn’t bode well for the future.

Meanwhile, as Vic wraps up his end of the San Marcos case, Dutch and Billings set out looking for the final piece: Eduardo Ramiro, the Mexican bureaucrat whose right arm was found amongst the eleven other chopped up bodies at the motel. When they finally track him to a seedy hotel (sans right limb and in possession of a luggage full of money), Dutch can’t help but to bring him in, despite the fact that the guy has diplomatic immunity. Claudette chews him out for it, too, but it was definitely a smart move on Dutch’s part. Immunity or not, if this guy is the only surviving victim of a massacre, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s incredibly important to the case.

The rest of the episode was pretty lackluster, filled up mostly by Shane’s counteraction to Vic’s threats. The guy’s hard at work covering his ass (gathering info on every dirty deal from Vic’s past) and he’s even made a request for transfer back to the vice unit. Oh boy, here we go again. Shane’s back to his season four evil self again, including dealing with criminals for some extra cash (this time with the Armenians), and he’s not afraid to let Vic and Ronnie in on his plan. He’s given Vic a copy of all his “notes” (assuring him that the original is in a safe place) and is ready to play ball. The only question is: does Vic have the onions to take the fall himself, taking Shane with him and saving Ronnie from any legal outfall? I think so, but we’ll surely have to wait a whole season to find out.
