Stand-Up Hall of Fame: Bullz-Eye inducts their inaugural class

Anyone who’s attended an open mic night at their local comedy club can testify to the fact that just because you think you’re funny and you can make your friends laugh does not automatically mean that you’re a comedian. You’ve got to have good material, you’ve got to have a sense of timing, you’ve got to have a stage presence, and…well, actually, that’s pretty much the holy trinity. It might seem easy when you’re sitting in the cheap seats, but it’s a rare individual who can bring all three of those qualities up to the mic and use them to bring the house down. After all, as Peter O’Toole said in “My Favorite Year” (though lord knows he didn’t say it first), “Dying is easy; comedy is hard.”

We decided to create a Stand-Up Comics Hall of Fame to pay our respects to those comics who, in their careers, have made us laugh ‘til our sides hurt and then some. While there are some individuals whose inclusion is a given, with each induction into the Hall, we’re going to try and mix things up by throwing in a bit of a wild card. In some cases, it might be a more recent comedian; in other cases, it might be someone who wasn’t all that famous but who was nonetheless tremendously influential to those who followed in their footsteps. Rest assured, however, that anyone who makes it through these hallowed doors has unquestionably earned their place here, and if you doubt us, don’t worry: We’ll also provide recommendations of their best material for your listening and viewing pleasure.

The Inaugural Class:

Richard Pryor – “I went to Zimbabwe…and I know how white people feel in America now: relaxed! ‘Cause when I heard the police car, I knew they weren’t coming after me!”

Rodney Dangerfield – “Oh, this your wife, huh? A lovely lady. Hey baby, you must’ve been something before electricity.”

Bill Cosby – “My father established our relationship when I was seven years old. He looked at me and said, ‘You know, I brought you into this world, and I can take you out. And it don’t make no difference to me, I’ll make another one look just like you.’”

Lenny Bruce – “Take away the right to say fuck and you take away the right to say fuck the government.”

Bill Hicks – “George Bush says ‘we are losing the war on drugs.’ Well, you know what that implies? There’s a war going on…and people on drugs are winning it! Well, what does that tell you about drugs? Some smart, creative motherfuckers on that side.”

“Celebrity Poker Showdown” returns next week…

…and Bravo is promoting the hell out of the fact that, while Dave Foley remains the primary moderator for the show, his co-host, Phil Gordon, has been replaced by fellow poker champion Phil Hellmuth.

Bullz-Eye was able to participate in a press conference with Foley and Hellmuth…one which was so underattended that we were able to get on the line twice to ask questions. (This is impressive when you consider that, on the last press conference we were in on, we couldn’t get in to ask even one.)

Did someone say “spoon”…?

Coming August 29th…but it’s not being called “Season 1” because it’s missing one episode. It remains unexplained at present which episode is being pulled out of the set and why, but it was apparently a last-second decision, as there have been some press releases which reference this being a full-season set.

Oh, well. Maybe we’ll get a single-episode disc released at some point in the future, entitled “The Episode They Didn’t Want You To See!”

To keep you going ’til the next season of “Lost”…

…consider picking up one of the new action figures from McFarlane Toys based on the show. According to the company’s site, the first series of figures “captures six fan-favorite characters from the series’ first season: Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley, Charlie and Shannon. Each 6-inch ‘Lost’ figure will have a detailed base and photographic backdrop, capturing an episode-specific moment in the character’s story.”

I think everyone’s going to want their very own Hurley…but, thus far, the only figure available for viewing is Charlie. Looks pretty damned good, I have to say…

What a disaster: Bullz-Eye ranks the definitive disaster movies

With the rather dismal performance by Wolfgang Petersen’s remake of “The Poseidon Adventure” – Josh Lucas gnashed his teeth so much, he looked like a rabid dog – it appears that we have seen the death of the disaster movie for the foreseeable future, if not for good. Okay, we know to never say never when it comes to Hollywood’s tendency to pilfer its history; after all, they thought that remaking “Sabrina,” “Bewitched” and “The Stepford Wives” were good ideas. Still, “Poseidon” managed to take in only $22 million of its reported $160 million budget, and while $22 million is a lot of money, it would have to make that much every weekend for the next two months in order to break even. Good luck with that, Warners.

As the mother of all popcorn movie genres sinks into the sunset – and we confess, we’re more than a little sad to see it happen – Bullz-Eye takes a tearful look back at our favorite disaster movies of all shapes and sizes, from birds and viruses (talk about life imitating art: now we have bird viruses) to aliens and tornadoes, with the hope that we’ll get to see stuff getting blow’d up good.
