DVD shuffle: 12/06/05

Out on DVD this week:

1) Cinderella Man – BUY: The two-disc collector’s edition of Ron Howards’s box office flop is jam-packed with special features. Oh, and the movie is pretty darn good as well. This is one that shouldn’t be missed.

2) Fantastic Four – RENT: Being one of the summer’s most successful films doesn’t necessarily make it good, but in this case, it’s definitely worth checking out at least once. That said, the special features are pretty much all fluff, so don’t expect too much in that department.

3) The Dukes of Hazzard – PASS: What else can we say?

4) 24: Season Four – BUY: The best season of the hit FOX thriller finally hits DVD just in time before the start of season five. If this isn’t on your holiday wish list yet, be sure to make some last minute adjustments. The extras are only so-so, but with a DVD box set like this, the show is all that matters.

Blue hairspray and other horrible props

I’ve been waiting all weekend for the rumored “X-Men 3” trailer to hit apple.com, and now that I’ve seen it, well, I wish I hadn’t. All of the rumors about director Brett Ratner ruining the “X-Men” franchise is true. And while the movie itself actually looks to be quite entertaining, the steps Ratner took to get there are unforgettable. The most notable new mutants introduced in the third film are Angel (Ben Foster), Beast (Kelsey Grammar) and Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones). And while the former is not only an amazing casting choice but also looks great in character, the latter two just look absolutely ridiculous.

Grammar in-costume as Beast may just be the worst-looking comic character brought to big screen. He looks more like Wolverine on Halloween than the Beast fans of the comics all know and love. And Juggernaut could have been worst if Jones hadn’t managed to pump himself up so big. The guy had to have gained at least 100 pounds of pure muscle for the role (no joke), but the new costume (very different from the all-metal suit he usually wears in the comics) is a joke. It’ll take some serious pause action to get a good look at it, but I can assure you that you won’t like what you see. It’s also curious to note that the title of the film is being rumored as “X3: The Last Stand.” If the movie is as ridiculous as it looks, you can bet it will be the last “X-Men” film in a long time.

Still, the trailer’s worth checking out here: http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/x3/large.html

Hail to the king, baby

In what might just be the most exciting news to come out of Hollywood all year, B-list favorite Bruce Campbell has announced he will star and direct the upcoming motion picture, “They Call me Bruce.” As reported on Bruce’s official site:

The film is “the tale of a small town set upon by demons after a group of teen-agers unwittingly unleash an ancient curse. Campbell, playing himself, is kidnapped off the set of a B horror movie and, despite his protestations that he’s just an actor, is forced to play the role of his heroic movie character in order to save the town.”

Anyone familiar with Bruce’s past work on the “Evil Dead” series has gotta love this news, but it’s doubtful that the film will see a wide release. Movie studio’s have long passed up on making Campbell a bonafide A-lister, and as the actor gets older, the chances that he’ll get any closer to making big slowly narrows. This announcement is still great news for fans of the B actor’s work, coming on the heels of last week’s rumor that a sequel to “Bubba Ho-Tep” was also in the works.

Aeon Flux, minus the S&M

With only one big-budget movie opening this weekend (“Aeon Flux“), it might be time to start making plans. The Charlize Theron-led sci-fi action film should have no trouble racking up an impressive three-day take at the box office, but that doesn’t mean it will actually be any good. Some markets might also be lucky enough to get the snowboarding documentary “First Descent,” and “Syrianna” goes into a much wider release this week as well. Still, if there’s an older movie you’ve been dying to see, this might be the time to do it.

I’ve been a bad girl

So, we finally know why Kate was being transported by a Federal Marshal on the flight from Australia to Los Angeles; she blew up her father… literally. And inside her mother’s house, which she so kindly bought insurance for mere days beforehand. I guess this makes Kate’s crime a little less shocking, since her father was a grade-A asshole, but I just can’t buy into the fact that neither her nor Sawyer are as bad of people as the audience was first led to believe. C’mon, at least make one of them a real criminal for the sake of some variety! And what was the deal with Kate taking care of Sawyer, running off to make out with Jack in the woods, and then coming back to Sawyer to express her feelings for him all within one day’s time? Was that lip service with Jack really necessary; besides adding extra drama between Jack and Sawyer in further episodes, of course?

Meanwhile, Locke, Michael and Mr. Eko check out the educational film on the Dharma project with no new results. That is, until Mr. Eko uncovers a book the tail-end survivors found on the other side of the island; a book that just so happens to hold the missing film strip from the Dharma video. And while Locke and Eko learn a thing or two from the new footage – namely about using the computer for entering the Pick 5 Lotto Numbers AND NOTHING ELSE (especially communication) – Michael is off in the other room doing just that. And in a very “Matrix” moment that starts with a blinking computer prompt and an uneasy “Hello,” Michael discovers that he might just be talking to his son Walt on the other end. I’m suspect to believing that Walt has actually managed to get hold of a computer wherever he’s being held (unless he’s using his X-Men powers to communicate with his father), but I’d accept any bullshit answer as long as the poor castaways don’t have to enter those damn numbers ever 184 minutes.
