Crouching Surgeon, Hidden Doctor

For those who thought that “Scrubs” had lost its comedic bite need only look to the opening minutes of tonight’s episode when Turk and the Todd took on a gang of Asian surgeron ninjas to the tune of “Kung-Fu Fighting.” Now, if that’s not comedy, I don’t know what is.

“Scrubs” is still the funniest show on TV. Don’t make me tell you again.

DVD shuffle: 01/10/06

Out on DVD this week:

1) Transporter 2 – RENT: Fans of Jason Statham will definitely want to check out the sequel to his U.S. breakout film, but it’s nothing worth owning. The special features are brief and not very interesting, but it’s an enjoyable popcorn flick perfectg for a rainy day.

2) Hustle & Flow – BUY: Terrence Howard proves that he’s the next Denzel Washington with his performance in this Sundance favorite, while the DVD offers tons of behind-the-scenes material that is actually worth watching.

3) Red Eye – RENT: I never got a chance to see Wes Craven’s latest entry, but fellow Bullz-Eye critic David Medsker gave it rave reviews and I can’t help but trust his opinion.

4) The Constant Gardnener – RENT: Yet another political thriller that’s not all that thrilling, but it’s a good story nonetheless.

Also out on DVD this week are re-releases of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Good Morning Vietnam,” and “The Return of the Pink Panther.” And availble now in stores are the latest installments of the Disney Treasures rollout that includes volume two of “The Chronological Donald,” “Disney Rarities,” and “The Adventures of Spin & Marty.” These two disc sets are perfect for kids and any fan of Disney’s early work.

The Chronicles of Eisner, or How to Get Free Publicity

Attention late night couch potatoes: “SNL” is funny again. It took them long enough, considering Will Ferrell was the only remaining talent on the cast until about three years ago. After leaving the show to pursue a movie career, though, the famous sketch program was left in the hands of… gasp… Jimmy Fallon. We all know how that turned out, since Fallon has one character he uses in every one of his skits. Now, relative newcomers Chris Parnel and Andy Samberg have delivered what’s sure to become the hottest internet download of the year with the “‘SNL’ Digital Short” entitled “Lazy Sunday.” In it, two grown men rap about their journey on the way to seeing Disney’s “The Chronicles of Narnia” in theaters. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll hit “replay.”

January: Welcome to Hell

With the beginning of a new year comes January, the official dumping grounds for the worst of the worst in this year’s film litter, and this week offers up two prime examples with the good possibility of a third. Along with the Uwe Boll video game adaptation of “Bloodrayne,” and the not-dumb-it’s-funny-but-dumb-because-it’s-really-dumb “Grandma’s Boy,” horror auteur Eli Roth’s releases his latest feature, “Hostel.” The film, which has pretty much been described as a movie that would make even the “Saw” guys hurl, has received mostly positive reviews, but with the warning that it might not be as psychotic as the trailers make it seem. Also in wide release this week is the Steven Spielberg political thriller “Munich” and the Heath Ledger romantic comedy “Casanova.”

Hungry for money

Kevin Federline is old news, even if the Britney Spears mooch-a-holic continues to self-promote his impending hip hop career. The new kid on the block? Patrick Swayze, who, according to AllHipHop.com, is planning to release a rap single sometime next year. The 53-year-old actor (?) had one chart-topping hit in the late 80’s, thanks mostly to the success of “Dirty Dancing,” but seriously, who’s going to break the news that old white dudes can’t rap. Hey Patrick, you’re free to borrow my copy of “White Men Can’t Jump.” I know it’s not the same, but you’ll get the idea…
