Out on DVD this week:

1) The Boondock Saints: Unrated Edition – BUY: Far and wide one of the best cult films ever made. The unrated edition promises more graphic violence and language and comes packaged in a cool metal tin.

2) BloodRayne – PASS: Ye gods, how does Uwe Boll continue to get work, let alone still secure the rights to adapt video games for the big screen? If “Alone in the Dark” and “House of the Dead” wasn’t enough to make you hate this guy, then “BloodRayne” undoubtedly will.

3) Kingdom of Heaven: Director’s Cut – RENT: Director Ridley Scott’s theatrical cut of the film left much to be desired, but this new four-disc set offers the historical epic that was originally envisioned. It’s still not one of the best sword-and-sandal films, but it’s definitely worth checking out.

Also out this week is the award-nominated “Transamerica,” the direct-to-DVD drama “London” and the second season of the HBO western “Deadwood.”

Why you should be watching BBC America…

The cable network’s latest six-episode series, “The Thick of It,” premiered two weeks ago and is the political equivalent of the original BBC-produced “The Office.” The story focuses on a British government minister and his unreliable team of assistants as they strive to implement new policies and stay clear of the headlines. The humor may not always hit with American audiences, but the biting satire is universal.

Be sure to check it out when a new episode airs this Friday at 9:00 PM ET/ 10:00 PM PT on BBC America.

Michael: the big cry-baby

What is up with this guy? And more importantly, why is anybody even listening to him? Do they really have to do things his way or not at all? Um… no. Michael has absolutely no power among the survivors. He’s not the strongest of the group, or the most intelligent. In fact, beside his construction expertise when building the boat (that was blown up, by the way), this guy is a complete waste of space. Jack is a doctor. Jin can fish. Sun gardens. Charlie sings. Hurley is great company. Locke can track. Sayid can torture prisoners and build radios. Eko can beat the shit out of, well, anybody. Claire can procreate. Kate’s just nice eye-candy, but she can shoot a gun as well. Hell, even Vincent the Dog can fetch and bark at intruders.

Michael, however, does nothing. He can’t even lie well, or Sayid wouldn’t have been able to pick up on the fact that he had been compromised during his trip to the Others camp. He’s told Jack about it, and now all they have to do is figure out a way to tip the scales in their favor. Here’s an idea: why don’t Sayid, Jin, Eko and Charlie nab a few guns and follow the first group to the camp? That obviously makes too much sense, especially since there’s a rogue sailboat stealing everyone’s attention. Hello! There’s nobody in there! Can we forget about the stupid boat and get back to more pressing matters? Like, gee, I dunno, beat the shit out of Michael for murdering Ana-Lucia and Libby? It’d be a good start anyway…

Out on DVD this week:

1) The Ringer – RENT: Johnny Knoxville as an out-of-luck schmuck pretending to be mentally handicapped only goes so far. The rest is up to the story and, unfortunately, it’s not very good.

2) The Producers – RENT: Fans of the Broderick/Lane stage version of the musical will definitely want to check out the film, but those that favor the original Mel Brooks-directed film may feel otherwise.

3) Napoleon Dynamite: Like, the Best Special Edition Ever – BUY: The single-disc release of the film has been out for over a year, but this is the version you want to own. There’s no changes to the film itself, but the special features will be enjoyed by any fan of the cult classic.

Also out this week is a remake of the 70’s thriller, “When a Stranger Calls,” the computer animated children’s film, “Doogal,” and special editions of “Con Air,” “Crimson Tide,” and “Enemy of the State.”

HBO’s “Deadwood”: dead?

That’s the word on the block, anyways, according to CNN.com:

The pay cable network has opted not to pick up the options of the actors on the show, releasing them to pursue other projects. “Deadwood” creator David Milch is shifting his attention to “John From Cincinnati,” a one-hour project he is writing for HBO. The surfing-themed drama has been ordered as a pilot, subject to finalizing deals on the financial and talent side.

Just more sad news from the TV front, I’m afraid, and only a few weeks before season three is set to premiere. We can only hope that HBO doesn’t plan to conclude their two top-rated dramas (including “The Sopranos”) in the same year. And if they do, then they better have something just as good to replace them.
