“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

Since it’s a nostalgic bittersweet, family-oriented musical comedy set in the turn of the century midwest starring Judy Garland, some of you might assume that “Meet Me in St. Louis” is kind of a drippy, saccharine movie. Trust me, it’s sweet but anything but drippy and established Vincente Minelli as one of the greatest of Hollywood directors. If your cable system has TCM, you can see for yourself; it’s showing at 10:00 pst/1:00 a.m. est tonight.

In the meantime, here’s big sister Judy Garland trying to console Margaret O’Brien with one of the loveliest pop Christmas songs ever written. This always gets to me.

The holiday is about here, and so let the gratuitous use of embeds begin!

Yeah, we’ve all been working hard and it’s time to have a little fun. For starters, here’s a gag reel I just stumbled over from “The Fellowship of the Ring.” I might have missed it, but as far as I know this isn’t on any of the DVDs — please correct me if I’m wrong.

I didn’t make a list best of list for the movies of the 2000s, partly because I’m not done seeing them, but if I did there’s a good chance that Peter Jackson’s massive adaptation of “The Lord of the Rings” would be right at the top. So, this tickles me a bit extra.

Good morning…zzzzzzz…

I’ve been staying up late a lot lately trying to finish various projects before the holiday lull. I wish I could be as energetic right now at 1:30 a.m. as Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O’Connor were in 1953’s “Singin’ in the Rain.” Of course, they’d just decided to make a musical. More people should do that.
