Month: August 2006 (Page 3 of 21)

DVD shuffle: 08/29/06

New on DVD this week:

1) LOTR Trilogy: Limited Editions – BUY: Complete with a brand-new documentary by Costa Boates, I say that this is a definite must-buy. Owners of the previously-released extended cut of the film might say otherwise.

2) The Sentinel – RENT: It’s not good, but fans of the genre might enjoy it on a rainy night.

3) Friends with Money – RENT: Jennifer Aniston is at her absolute best when she’s playing the plain Jane loser.

4) Take the Lead – PASS: It’s like “Sister Act,” but with dancing.

Also out this week are a reissues of ’80s classics like “Pretty in Pink” and “Some Kind of Wonderful,” new TV season sets of “Arrested Development,” “South Park,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Will & Grace” and “Desperate Houswives,” as well as “The Chuck Norris American Hero Collection” and a “Romancing the Stone”/”Jewel of the Nile” double pack.

Hey, at least they’re stealing from good movies

Last week’s “Silence of the Lambs” switcheroo moment was followed up by a “Fugitive” moment this week. When the guys were trying to rescue LJ in the elevator, Agent Mahone realized that neither guy was going to shoot him. Could this be the seed that will eventually result in Mahone helping to bring those responsible for the framing of Lincoln Burrows to justice? If “The Fugitive” is to be our guide, it’s going to take a lot of evidence to convince Mahone that the guys might be innocent.

One thing’s for sure: it’s pretty convenient that Westmoreland’s money and Terrence Steadman are both in Utah. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mahone discovered Steadman’s prison by the end of the season.

Box Office Roundup: Eagles eat snakes for breakfast

Based on Sunday’s estimates, courtesy of boxofficemojo.com:

1) Invincible: $17 million (first week)
Mark Wahlberg tending bar at night to make ends meet. Now that is a believable role.
2) Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby: $8 million ($127.6 million, fourth week)
Gary Cole for President.
3) Little Miss Sunshine: $7.5 million ($23 million, fifth week)
Already profitable in ways that “Snakes on a Plane” will never know.
4) Beerfest: $6.5 million (first week)
We’re puzzled by the performance of this one, since it had ‘Every guy’s new favorite movie’ written all over it.
5) Accepted: $6.4 million ($21.1 million, second week)
Hey, at least it held its position from last week. There’s something to be said for minimal expectations.

8) Idlewild: $5.8 million (first week)
Tragic that OutKast is going to go out not with a bang but a whimper.
9) Snakes on a Plane: $5.8 million ($26 million, second week)
The bones of another New Line executive are being scattered across Los Angeles as you read this.
