The Biggest Loser: Producers love games

On NBC’s “The Biggest Loser: Couples,” gameplay reared its ugly head again last week as the black team voted off Damien after saying they wouldn’t. The show began last night with the blue team members pissed off about that, and feeling like they could not trust the black team, and also that the game was now “on.” Yeah, just what I don’t want to see in a weight loss show. But I guess we have to get used to it, because this is what the show is about, and what the producers want us to see. However, I also have to say that while everyone kept Joelle in the competition another week, she finally is showing signs of wanting to succeed and wanting to work hard to get there.

With five days until the teammates who were sent home in Week 1 can return, everyone is getting anxious and looking forward to getting back to the “Couples” theme. Being that it is Super Bowl week in real time, Curtis Stone from “Take Home Chef” was brought in for the initial challenge, which was to guess the calories in typical Super Bowl fare. The winner would get a 2-pound pass for their partner at that weigh in, and Stone would fly to wherever the partner was for a healthly cooking lesson. Big Dan won the challenge, and Stone surprised his partner Dave back in North Carolina. Dave has been eating somewhat unhealthy at home, stuff like fried chicken and hot dogs Continue reading »

The Biggest Loser: Here We Go Gameplay, Here We Go

The big, ugly thing known as Gameplay has reared its ugly head again on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” Last night, just when I thought the contestants were playing the game for the right reasons, they proved me wrong again. Ugh.

First off, everyone was shown as upset with Joelle at the start of the show, because she had shown the week before that she, out of anyone there, did not want to put the effort in to lose weight like everyone else. And then when two very likeable contestants, Dan and Jerry, fell below Joelle at the weigh-in, everyone seemed pissed off that they had to choose between those two rather than Joelle. Meanwhile, they showed some of the at-home contestants, and Dan’s partner Dave was shown eating a piece of fried chicken. Last week it was a couple of hot dogs. What goes on off-camera, Dave? Dude is sabotaging his team, and I have a bad feeling about that.

Then came the temptation challenge, where a contestant (and their teammate at home) could eat some pizza or other equally calorie-dense item, or eat nothing. The team who ate the most calories would “win” the prize of having their trainer give their team some one-on-one training for a few days. Of course, you should be considered a “winner” if you eat nothing. Carla, Joelle’s best friend and partner back in Detroit, ate 2710 calories, while Joelle ate nothing. But it was enough to get a win, and to have Bob Harper travel with Joelle to Detroit to train the gray team. This was humorous, because Bob has been having trouble whipping Joelle into shape to begin with, but Carla, who is very fiery, was getting angry that Joelle did not mirror her fire and desire to win.

The Biggest Loser: Families: Karma is a Powerful Thing

Folks, you can’t ignore karma, because it is more powerful than all of us. Last week, as NBC’s “The Biggest Loser: Families” was barreling toward its live season finale, there was a cliffhanger of sorts. Michelle and Vicky had reached the finals, but the third finalist would be determined by America voting between Ed and his wife Heba. They tried some sneaky gameplay thing, where Ed gained two pounds and then implored America to vote Heba into the finale. I voted for Ed and urged all of you to do the same, and it turns out we weren’t the only ones who wanted to stick it to Heba. They had them both come out on stage (both of them look phenomenal by the way), and it was announced that Ed was going to be the third finalist, with (get this) 84% of the vote. That’s not just karma, it’s a sure sign that America is tired of the gameplay and more about the true spirit of the show. Good for you all. But there is more to this story, and I’ll get to that later.

They had a look back at the season, and host Alison Sweeney, who at this point is very pregnant, was stumbling all over her words, which was pretty funny. Then they started bringing out the eliminated contestants in groups of four, and would show a video recap of each one and then have them weight in. The contestant with the highest percentage of weight loss among the eliminated players would take home $100K.

First was Adam and his wife Stacy, and Tom and his son LT. Adam lost 80 pounds, or 23.53%. Stacy lost 65 pounds, or 29.41%. LT lost 87 pounds and Tom 78 pounds, but both were in the 24% range and so Stacy was the current leader. Then they brought out Jerry and his daughter Coleen, and Shellay and her daughter Amy. Let me tell you, this was the highlight of the show Continue reading »

The Biggest Loser: Families Barrels Toward Finale

As cliche as it sounds, these reality show seasons seem to go so fast, they run into each other after a while. NBC’s “The Biggest Loser: Families” will air its live finale on Tuesday after last night’s final three (minus one) were revealed. More on that shortly.

First, the episode last night began with “blue team” members Ed, Heba and Vicky celebrating that they voted off another “black team” member, Renee, last week. So it was just the three of them and Michelle in the Final Four. But wait, this season there is only a Final Three. So with this one more episode, another contestant would be going home.

When trainer Bob Harper met his blue team, he told Vicky he was concerned about her. That’s because she was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, gameplayer to ever set foot on the ranch. She wanted the grand prize from Day 1, and she would stab anyone in the back on her way toward that goal. But Bob reminded her that in Season 1 of the show, champion Ryan was also a gameplayer, and while he lost the most weight then, he now weighs the same Continue reading »

The Biggest Loser: Final Four, But Wait…..

Last night’s “Biggest Loser: Families” got us down to the final four for the season, but there are two episodes left including the live finale on December 16. And as she does as sneaky as ever, host Alison Sweeney made mention of the fact that there would be a “final three” and another twist. Uh-oh. They already brought one eliminated player back…what next? Really now, this show is starting to become a cartoon of itself, and that’s not good.

But down to business. Last night they showed the remaining five players go to New York City for a makeover with Christian Soriano. Now, I can tell you the quarterbacks and coaches from every NFL team, but I had no idea who this guy was, or what “Project Runway” was until Mrs. Mike pointed that out. Thanks, Mrs. Mike. Anyway, they all received makeovers which they would then debut on the “Tyra Banks Show.” The makeovers, honestly, were not all that great, but the contestants all look good because of the weight they lost. Vicky’s red hair looked, well, really bad. And the best part was that they each had a family member surprise them on stage. Those family members were also there to hang out and work out with the contestants for an extra day or two. Then it was back to the ranch.

There was a product placement of Jennie-O Turkey when Ed and Heba made trainer Bob Harper a “thank you” meal of turkey lettuce wraps. Then the challenge, which was to be suspended in a box 15 feet above a pool, holding yourself up as long as possible. Vicky was out first, but refused to drop into the water because she was scared. Then Heba, then Ed, then Renee, which left Michelle the winner. The prize was a spa package in some resort. Vicky, meanwhile, had to face her fear and jump, which she eventually did. Everyone was very nice and encouraging to the evil Vicky, and they actually wound up showing a soft side of her.

At the weigh in, Heba lost the most, followed by Michelle and Vicky. Renee and Ed were below the yellow line. So do the math….two blue shirts to one black shirt were voting, which meant for sure Renee was going home, right? Well, they made us all think that maybe Vicky would vote Ed off since he has a lot of weight to lose. But in the end, she stayed true to her “blue” teammates and voted Renee off.

Renee was shown coming home at the church where it all began, when Jillian showed up to recruit her and Michelle. And she has really lost a ton of weight, and looks great. So now we’re left with Ed, Heba, Vicky and Michelle. They spoke about the twist and that America may vote off the next contestant….let me tell you something Vicky, you’d better not be below the line if that’s the case next week, because I am quite sure no one in America will want to keep you there except maybe your own family. You are still evil, Vicky!

With that, we’re winding down and let’s hope the final two episodes are exciting with a limit on bickering and gameplay and twists. See you next week!
