MTV Movie Awards not so rewarding for Beyonce

Bring it on.

Seems like everything is not all wine and roses for miss Beyonce. You see, Rhianna is slated to perform at this year’s MTV Movie Awards and Miz Knowles is threatening to not show up, even though she is a nominee. This is all due to a man, natch. And of course that man is none other than Jay-Z. Looks like Beyonce has officially landed in Divaland. Unfortunately for both her and Rhianna, Jay-Z’s got 99 problems and a bitch ain’t one. For some reason these two didn’t get the message as I assume they were both too busy trying to use the rapper in hopes of adding a little toughness to their images. Girls, you’re fine to look at, but I wouldn’t wanna live there.

Animation Station: Volume One

Please welcome the latest column to the Premium Hollywood family: Animation Station, where you can read about some of the latest anime titles currently in stores. I don’t presume to be an expert in the field of Japanese animation, but I do respect the medium and agree that it has a place in the industry. So enjoy my commentary and reviews, and feel free to post your questions and comments below.

Burst Angel: The Complete Series

“Burst Angel” represents everything you could ever want in an anime: action, comedy, CG mech battles and, of course, big-breasted women packing semi-automatic weapons. The only thing it lacks is a story, so, yes, it doesn’t have everything, but that should be the least of your worries when watching a series that clearly chooses style over substance. The series takes place in a future Tokyo where the carrying of firearms is perfectly legal (as is firing it in public), but despite the inception of a new task force meant to keep crime levels at an all time low, the streets have become crowded with man-made monsters and machines. In response to the impending threat of annihilation, four women have joined together to fight evil. The summary may sound a bit generic, or at least a lot like “Bubblegum Crisis” (and it is), but that doesn’t make “Burst Angel” any less entertaining. Fans of sci-fi action animes will definitely enjoy the show, while the provided eye-candy doesn’t hurt either. The six-disc box set collecting the entire series is also one of the best sets Funimation has put out in a while and includes all 24 episodes, six guidebooks featuring character profiles, interviews and production art, as well as extras like director commentary, outtakes and more.

Tsubasa: Vol. 1 – Gathering of Fates

No, this isn’t the Japanese version of the delicious Polish sausage, but rather the very first collaboration between all-girl manga group CLAMP and anime producers Bee Train. “Tsubasa” tells the story of Syaoran, a young archeologist in love with childhood friend Princess Sakura. When Sakura’s soul is lost and broken into feather fragments spread across the universe, Syaoran embarks on a dangerous journey (along with a group of strangers accompanying him for different reasons) to retrieve the feathers so that Sakura can be brought back to life. Best described as a mix between “Cardcaptor Sakura” and the “.hack” series, “Tsubasa” is about as generic as animes come. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however, as it is the perfect series to recommend to someone looking to get into Japanese animation. Things do get complicated during the course of the first five episodes, as several new characters come and go with little explanation, but the included bonus material features a character guide that serves as a clear-cut appendix to the world.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward

When the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles returned to the small screen in 2003, creators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman reintroduced them to a new generation as the darker, grittier versions that first appeared in the original comic book series. The show lasted four seasons – developing the Turtles far more than ever before – and was concluded with a cliffhanger episode meant to be resolved in a fifth season. Instead, the continuation of the Ninja Tribunal story arc was shelved in favor of a new concept (dubbed “Fast Forward”) that found our heroes transported hundred years into the future by Cody Jones, the great grandson of Casey Jones and April O’Neil. The result is a manga-inspired Saturday morning cartoon for the ADD-generation (much like the WB’s “The Batman” series) that clearly frowns upon the complex story development that made the 2003 series such a welcome revival of the classic property. Still, while many fans have openly voiced their disapproval of the new direction the show has taken, it’s really not that bad. Sure, the episodes are more standalone than ever, and the slapstick comedy is a bit overdone, but Laird and Eastman haven’t jumped the shark just yet.

A Couple of Questions with…Bill Bellamy and Peter Engel

“Last Comic Standing” is returning for its fifth season…but it’s doing so without host Anthony Clark. (Some, like our own Mike Farley, would say that’s a blessing.) Now fronting the mike for the series is Bill Bellamy, who, if you’re really old, you might remember from his days as an MTV VJ. We spoke with Bellamy, along with the show’s producer, Peter Engel, during a recent teleconference.

Bullz-Eye: Bill, you’ve been working on “Who’s Got Jokes” recently, for TV One.

Bill Bellamy: Yes.

BE: Will you be bringing the Pope of Comedy over to “Last Comic Standing” with you?

BB: Uh, no. (Laughs) No, no, we won’t! He’ll definitely have his throne on “Who’s Got Jokes,” but we have on “Last Comic Standing,” man, we have amazing, amazing fun with our talent scouts. I mean, we got Kathleen Madigan, Alonzo Bodden, we got ANT, and these guys…I mean, they’re like three Popes in one, in a way, ‘cause they’re bringing so much laughter and, also, y’know, critiquing and just different elements to the show that we didn’t necessarily have before.

BE: Do you know if it was your work on “Who’s Got Jokes” that caught the eye of the producers, or were they just still remembering you fondly from your “Def Comedy Jam” days?

BB: Uh, yeah, I’m hoping it’s all of it… (Laughs)

Peter Engel: (Helpfully) Well, I’ll answer!

A Couple of Questions with…James Lipton

Yes, that’s right: the host of “Inside the Actor’s Studio.” The series is continuing onward, with Kyra Sedgwick as its latest guest, and we had the opportunity to pose a few questions to Mr. Lipton – who, if you can believe it, is eighty years old! – about a few items on his resume, as well as one we’ve always wondered about the students in the audience of the Actor’s Studio…

Bullz-Eye: Hi, Mr. Lipton.

James Lipton: Hi.

BE: Could you speak a little bit about your experiences working on “Arrested Development”?

JL: I loved it. Why wouldn’t I? Those people are extraordinary, beginning with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard at the top, and those actors are amazing. It was a wonderful show; I wish it were still on the air. It came as a surprise. They called me, and they pleaded with me to be on the show – don’t ask me why – and I couldn’t. I said, “Look, I…” At this point, I was still the dean of the (Actors Studio Drama School). I said, “I’m a dean, which is a full-time job, I’m executive producer, writer, and host of ‘Inside the Actor’s Studio,’ which is a full-time job…I can’t expand my week! I work 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, without exception, from the beginning of September ‘til the middle of June. I take two days off – Thanksgiving and Christmas – and that’s it. And I can’t come.” Finally, they got in touch with me, and they said, “Look: if you will come, we will do all your scenes in one day. Everybody else will lay off, and only the people involved in your scenes will come in and do your stuff with you, and we’ll get it all done in one day. We’ll fly you out, do it one day, and fly you back.” I agreed to do that. And then about a week before I was to arrive, they said, “Hey, we’ve written a second script for you…but we’ll do it all in the one day.” And then the night before I was to get on the plane, I got an E-mail which contained a third script, and they said, “But we’ll do it all in one day!” I did them all in one day! I did three shows in one day. And subsequently, of course, several months later, I did the final show. I came back for one show. And it was a great experience.

BE: I know that David Cross’s impression of you was not quite as good-natured as Will Ferrell’s…

JL: His was much less good-natured. I’d never seen it – I was only told – but do you want to hear a story about that?

BE: Sure!

NBC streams remaining episodes of “The Black Donnellys”

The network only aired six episodes of “The Black Donnellys,” but for those that are interested to see how things shook out with the four brothers, there are six more episodes available at NBC.com. I’m pretty sure the creators knew of the show’s fate before the final few episodes were shot, so they had an opportunity to wrap up the current story arcs and provide an appropriate ending to the show.

Shame on NBC for canceling the show, but kudos to the network for giving fans some closure to the series.
