Hell’s Kitchen: Don’t Forget It’s a Competition

Last night the final two on “Hell’s Kitchen,” Petrozza and Christina, got a glimpse of what life may be like for them if they win, and become an executive chef at Gordon Ramsay’s new Hollywood restaurant. And one thing became clear–both of them, as nice as they appear on the outside, have a burning desire to win this thing. How could they not after coming this far?

They started out by recapping the first thirteen weeks of the season. Yikes, has it been going on this long? There were contestants eliminated that I barely remembered, and both Christina and Petrozza had been close to leaving at various points in the show. They also went back to that first show of the season, when they had to cook a signature dish, and Petrozza’s was “hen in a pumpkin.” How hilarious, and how amazing that he’s come this far.

The two chefs were told they had to create their own menu, as for the finale Continue reading »

Hell’s Kitchen: Family Time

Last night’s “Hell’s Kitchen” featured the remaining three chefs–Corey, Christina and Petrozza–battling to reach the final showdown. To kick things off, their families were invited in to have lunch with them as Ramsay cooked for them himself. What a treat, right? Well, Christina was the only one who was smart enough to realize she should pay attention. So she analyzed the dish, which was a venison dish with white bean puree and some kind of wine sauce. The challenge, of course, was for them to re-create the dish using ingredients in the kitchen, in 45 minutes.

Not surprisingly, Christina won the challenge, though Petrozza and Corey put in quite an effort. Christina’s reward was to spend more time with her family and Ramsay as they dined at a few of the hot spots in Los Angeles. Corey and Petrozza, meanwhile, had to scrub glassed behind the bar.

For the dinner service, each contestant was asked to take turns “at the pass,” meaning they had to bark orders the way Ramsay does each night to everyone else in the kitchen. None of the three were particularly convincing doing this, but were not horrible, either. As always for this challenge, Ramsay had the sous chefs mess up a few of the dishes to see if the chefs would catch the mistakes. Only Christina did.

And while each contestant did a fairly good job last night, they each made their share of mistakes. Ramsay knows it gets tough at this point to send someone home, but he had to ask each one to nominate someone else for elimination. Corey chose Christina, Christina chose Corey, and Petrozza chose Christina. Ramsey announced the Petrozza was the first to reach the finals, and then he chose Christina as his challenger, sending Corey home.

I think Ramsay may already have it in his mind that Christina will be the executive chef at his new restaurant. But Petrozza is a fighter and he’s really hung in there. Not to mention he must really know something about running a kitchen.

So there you have it….next week we have the battle for the championship–the 47-year-old kitchen veteran against the 25-year-old up-and-comer. Should be interesting, but either one will be a good choice for Chef Ramsay. See you all next Wednesday!

Hell’s Kitchen: Final Four Battle

Last night’s “Hell’s Kitchen” featured a battle of the final four contestants–Jen, Corey, Petrozza and Christina. After last week when Christina put Jen on the chopping block, Jen started acting all sweet and nice, but none of the other three were buying it. They know she wants to win as much as they do.

The first challenge was that each chef had one hour to create a lunch special for 80 customers in Hell’s Kitchen, but it turns out that those customers were pregnant women. The women had to vote on what their favorite dish was, and Christina barely won over Petrozza. As a reward, Christina won a shopping spree in Beverly Hills with Ramsay. The other three had to clean up after the lunch service.
And while Jen and Corey were being catty toward Christina, Petrozza just kept his mouth shut.

At the dinner service, Ramsay singled Jen out as being lazy a couple of times, Corey for under-cooking fish, and Christina for burning Ramsay’s hand TWICE. Petrozza did a decent job overall and is looking like he could possibly win this thing. They had to pick a consensus two teammates for elimination….Jen was an easy choice, because the other three want her gone, and Corey stepped up to the chopping block as well. Ramsay then said Corey’s name, and then to get back in line as he asked Jen to take off her chef’s jacket. We will all miss Jen’s bubbly (read: annoying) personality, won’t we?

So now it’s down to Corey, Christina and Petrozza. I have no idea how this is going to play out, but I have a weird feeling Christina is going to get this dream job. We’ll see what happens…..but it will get interesting now that Jen has gone home. See you next week…

Hell’s Kitchen: Safe, Literally

Last night’s “Hell’s Kitchen” featured an elimination that made the five who were “safe” actually feel safe. They began by blindfolding the remaining six chefs and taking them to the roof of the building where Gordon Ramsay’s new restaurant will be, where one of them will be executive chef and earn $250K per year. Ramsay then had each of them take off their blue or red aprons, and put on black ones, signifying that they were no longer competing as teams, but as individuals.

For the opening challenge, each chef was given a type of meat that they had to build a dish around and cook it in 45 minutes. It came down to Christina’s fish and Jen’s steak, and Jen won the challenge. She started crying, showing an emotional side instead of her usual bossy attitude. Jen’s prize was a trip to Vegas and to have dinner with Rock, the Season 3 champ. Jen also was allowed to choose another contestant to travel with her to Vegas, and he surprisingly picked Corey. The rest of them had to unload delivery trucks all day, and while Christina took on a coordinator’s role, Matt was just whining all day.

For the dinner service, Ramsay teamed Christina and Matt up, knowing full well Continue reading »

Hell’s Kitchen: Words of Wisdom

Last night’s “Hell’s Kitchen” featured some words of wisdom that were really enlightening, but more on that later. They started off with a challenge, and that was a tag team kitchen relay. Each team had to cook three dishes , and each chef had just six minutes for their part. It was close, but once again the red team won the challenge, and their prize was a day of swimming and surfing lessons. The blue team, meanwhile, had to clean Hell’s Kitchen. And a subplot was beginning….that of Jen and Bobby bickering.

For the dinner service, the teams were able to create their own menus and present them to Ramsay. The red team Continue reading »
