If you miss the days when Isaac Hayes was the most awesome man alive…

…and, to be fair, he’s still not far from the top of the list, even if things got tainted a bit over his departure from “South Park”…you’ll want to check out the recently-released second season of “The Rockford Files.”

Hayes appears in an episode entitled “Hammer of C Block,” playing Rockford’s former prison pal, Gandolph “Gandy” Fitch. Gandy’s just gotten out of the joint after a 20-year stint, and he’s on the lookout for the person who was really responsible for the crime that got him locked away. (Although Hayes was decidedly younger than the character he was playing at the time, his always-shaven head lent him an older look, so all they really had to do was sprinkle some grey in his beard and voila!) Was he really innocent…? Well, you’ll have to watch the episode, won’t you? And trust me, you want to. It’s a really impressive dramatic, emotional performance from Hayes, one that will remind you that, although he’s best known for his comedic appearances these days, he’s actually a pretty good actor, too.

Well, that’s just fan-smurfing-tastic.

While not a 100% guarantee by any means, it looks like 2007 is set to be the year that the Smurfs finally make their debut on DVD.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I can say pretty unequivocably that “The Smurfs” were the official turning point for Saturday morning TV for me. I had a lot of years under my belt of vegging out and watching anything and everything the networks threw at me, but “The Smurfs” were the beginning of the end. Soon, I would buy a button that said “Nuke the Smurfs,” and I would begin my rebellious stage…which, if memory serves, consisted mostly of wearing the button and not much else.

Well, this ought to really piss off “TV Guide” subscribers.

In a advertising team-up with the networks, the next issue of TV Guide will feature a DVD glued to the front. The disc will include previews of the new and returning shows that’ll be airing this summer, in an attempt to get more viewers to tune in to the new, original programming.

The only catch: this DVD won’t be available to subscribers. If they want to watch it, they’ll have to buy a second copy of the magazine on the newsstand.

Yeah, that seems fair.

Did someone say “spoon”…?

Coming August 29th…but it’s not being called “Season 1” because it’s missing one episode. It remains unexplained at present which episode is being pulled out of the set and why, but it was apparently a last-second decision, as there have been some press releases which reference this being a full-season set.

Oh, well. Maybe we’ll get a single-episode disc released at some point in the future, entitled “The Episode They Didn’t Want You To See!”

Full season DVDs on the fast track

Now that TV shows are coming out on DVD left and right, it’s become common practice for the networks to release full-season sets immediately before the new season premieres, building excitement for the new by reminding how good the old was. According to TVShowsonDVD – which, as ever, is the source for all news on your favorite series making the trip to disc – a few shows that hadn’t yet made their DVD debut are making up for lost time before the fall.

Both “Medium” and “Numb3rs,” each just finishing up their sophomore seasons, are on the verge of having their first seasons appear on DVD – the former on June 13, the latter on May 30 – but to make sure everyone can play catch-up and be really psyched before their respective season premieres, each will have their second seasons out before then, too. There aren’t specific dates penciled in yet, but the talk has begun, so anticipate seeing them in September or, at the latest, early October.
