While all the Trekkies or Trekkers or whatever the politically-correct term is are experiencing simultaneous excitement and apprehension at what the next “Star Trek” film is going to be like (and writer J.J. Abrams is offering virtually nothing in the way of information about what to expect, which isn’t helping any), several fans are basically saying, “Ah, screw that,” and taking things into their own hands. Even more impressively, they’ve scored the assistance of Walter Koenig (Chekov), Nichelle Nichols (Uhura), and Alan Ruck (Captain Harriman in “Star Trek: Generations,” but you probably know him better as Cameron from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”). Check out the trailer for the upcoming flick; I have to say, while I know the budget can’t be but so much – and most of it almost certainly went to secure the cast – it really looks pretty good.

Dig it. “Runaway”, a show on The CW has officially been canned. So say the fine people at Brilliant But Cancelled. It’s the latest show to die on their deathwatch game. I didn’t even know about this show, but then again I don’t tend to watch The CW. For those of you who are morbidly curious now that this news has been issued, the show’s premise was as follows:
The Raders look like a normal middle-class American family, with a dad, Paul, his lovely wife Lily, teenagers Henry and Hannah and 8-year-old Tommy. Those are their real names, but as they struggle to blend into a new life in Bridgewater, Iowa, they are all using secret identities. This family is on the run, hiding from the legal system that unjustly accused Paul of a terrible and violent crime. Adding to the danger, the real killer is now threatening the lives of the Rader children. As Paul works to protect his loved ones and uncover the evidence that will clear him, he lives with the daily fear that someone will accidentally reveal the family’s dark secret.
Yeah, too damn convoluted even for such a fresh “new” network.
“Kill my agent. C-I-L-L my agent.”
Cinematical has announced that Eddie Murphy is set to star in a new science fiction comedy:
“Starship Dave” tells the story of a crew of miniature, human-looking aliens who are seeking a way to save their doomed planet. Murphy will play — wait for it — Dave, the human spacecraft they travel in an as well as the ship’s captain.
So, basically, we’re talking “Innerspace” meets “The Adventures of Pluto Nash,” here…not exactly a recipe for the resounding success that Murphy’s career could use right about now.
And, to be honest, we might perhaps have a wee soft spot for that 1987 flick starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short and Meg Ryan…but something tells us that won’t be nearly enough to keep “Starship Dave” from flaming out in spectacular fashion.
Is this a good idea? We’re not sure. We do know that the album cover is guaranteed to be very, very attractive, prominently featuring her big, beautiful…eyes…and we give the girl credit for setting the vocal-quality bar very, very low.
We’re not saying that Tom Waits isn’t a good songwriter; we’re just saying that if you dredged a Singing Hokey Pokey Elmo doll up from the bottom of the sea, crusted with months’ worth of salt and rust, its voice would probably still sound more melodious than that of Mr. Waits…so at least Scarlett shouldn’t have too much to worry about on that front.
