DVD shuffle: 02/14/06 – Hallmark Day: Part One Edition

New on DVD this week:

1) Saw II – RENT: Let me just begin by saying that while I find the “Saw” franchise to be an interesting idea, the producers should have never allowed anybody else near their baby. The script for the sequel wasn’t intended for the “Saw” series, and it’s pretty obvious in the everyday horror conventions that appear. Still, the film is worth checking out at least once, but don’t lay down the cash for this version – a SE is sure to hit shelves by the end of the year.

2) Proof – RENT: Another great film that received little attention come awards time. I’m not saying that the film is that good, but it’s refreshing to see Gwyneth Paltrow back in the game. Almost no special features to name of, but director John Madden (no, not that Madden) offers a decent commentary track.

3) Zathura – PASS: I never saw this film, nor do I have any intention to. It surprises me that the author who wrote “Jumanji” could be sitting around his room one day and think: “I’ll just do it ALL over again… but in space!” I’m usually a fan of anything Jon Favreau does, but this kid’s movie is one thing I’ll make the exception for.

Also out on DVD this week is the Neil Gaiman-created “Mirrormask,” season one of “Grey’s Anatomy,” as well as new season releases for several other shows like “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Golden Girls,” “Living Single,” “Gimme a Break” and “Charles in Charge.”

A movie you need to see (with a few beers) – From Justin to Kelly!

Ah yes, From Justin to Kelly, starring everyone’s favorite American idols Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini. Clarkson has since disavowed the project, but dammit, it’s one of those pieces of poo that you should sit down with and view while ingesting a few beers and tasty snacks. Clarkson’s always good eye candy, and Justin’s hair is too damn much! It’s true rock and roll, kids, and you know me likey that.

The plot is pointless. It’s Spring Break on Daytona Beach! Kelly’s workin’ in some dumpy-ass country bar dreaming of being a big time singer (more or less), and Justin and his buddies set up yearly parties and activities to help pay for their pad when school is in session. Of course, the two randomly bump into each other, but Kelly’s hussy southern belle bitch of a friend doesn’t think she’s party girl material for Justin and tries to sabotage their attempts at meeting over and over. Justin claims he’s not really a partying, multiple-sex partner kinda guy and really digs Kelly. See, I told you it was pointless.

And so are the songs! Man, during one slow tune, Justin and Kelly start singing telepathically to each other and then burst out into song. It’s beautiful. There’s also a cool scene later on in the movie where Justin has to play some sort of stupid hovercraft game in the ocean against a local yokel from Kelly’s hometown to prove his love for her! Then there’s also a shitty cover version of The Go-Gos “Vacation” playing over the opening credits as sung by Clarkson. Justin’s wild hairdo also gets wet twice!

It’s all too much and easy to see why Kelly scratched this one off her resume. But there’s enough so bad it’s good shit here to make it worth sitting through drunkenly at least once. Especially when the first musical number is nothing but an ode about getting it on sung by a beach full of horny kids all doing synchronized dance moves. What’s more, the DVD has two versions of the movie – the regular theatrical release and a longer one with two extra songs! I watched the longer one for maximum torture.

From Justin to Kelly was a fine ebay purchase for $1.99. With shipping and all it came to a little over three bucks. Anyway, we all know Kelly’s gone on to greater things, and Justin…well, his website is pretty bleak. Let’s just say he’s probably hoping for a sequel. Ah well, maybe he’ll get his own pinball game. That would be awesome.

New on DVD this week:

1) Doom – RENT: Okay, so we all got a nice big laugh out of this one when it was released in theaters, but honestly, “Doom” is one of the best video-game adaptations ever. That’s not saying much, especially for a decade-old genre constantly being held back from progress due to annual Uwe Boll films, but gamers will eat it up.

2) Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit – RENT: I still haven’t found the time to check out this Oscar-nominated feature, but anything that comes from Aardman Animation is usually pure gold – yes, even “Chicken Run.” I can’t imagine it would be any different, and while this could very well be worthy of a “BUY,” I’ll stick with recommending a rental for now.

3) Elizabethtown – RENT: Certainly one of Cameron Crowe’s lesser films, but its still not an entirely horrible film. Make good use of this one as that required monthly date movie – both people may come out of pleased.

4) Just Like Heaven – RENT: If I had to pick just one romantic comedy this week, it would have to be my above recommendation, but seeing as how Reese Witherspoon is so good to look at, and Jon Heder is so funny to laugh at, a second helping might just be in the works.

5) Waiting – RENT: Ok, so this movie isn’t exactly worth renting for just ANYBODY, but to those of you who have ever worked in a restaurant environmen, enjoy! There’s also quite a bit of bonus material to sift through, but most of it’s garbage.

Also out on DVD this week are Sean Connery and Cary Grant box sets, the Johnny Knoxville flick “Daltry Calhoun,” as well as special edition rereleases of both “The French Connection” and “Speed.”

Out on DVD this week:

1) Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride – RENT: When it comes to stop-motion animation, I’d much rather watch a Wallace & Gromit flick. Burton, however, is the next best and this film is a great reflection of that. Still, it’s no “Nightmare Before Christmas.”

2) In Her Shoes – RENT: A chick flick that guys will like? You bet. Director Curtis Hanson offers the perfect date movie with this female tale about sisterhood. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Cameron Diaz flocks around in little more than a postage stamp the entire film.

3) Supercross: The Movie – PASS: This pointless extreme sports film about two brothers trying to break in to professional Supermoto is actually quite enjoyable, but you’d still find me hardpressed to recommend this to anyone.

Also out this week are Special Editions of “The Legend of Zorro,” “Gone With the Wind,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” and “Dune,” as well as season three releases of “Magnum P.I.,” “The A-Team,” and “Knight Rider.”

Out on DVD this week:

1) Flightplan – RENT: For how well this film did at the box office, I have to say that I was expecting a whole lot more. Still, it’s theatrical success is hardly worth contesting, so I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

2) The Fog – PASS: Never got a chance to see this remake of the classic 70’s horror film, and quite frankly, I never will. The casting of YA Superman doesn’t help the case either, but fans of Maggie Grace jonesing for some wet T-shirt action may very well be compelled to pick this one up.

3) The Aristocrats – RENT: A documentary about the dirtiest joke ever told, “The Aristocrats” is more of a secret handshake between comics than a film for the Average Joe. Still, despite it’s utter lack of comedy, it would be difficult to suggest never seeing this movie. It’s certainly worth seeing once, but that’s it.

Also out this week is a reissue of the sci-fi cult film “Repo Man,” as well as the gen-Y drama “Thumbsucker.”
